The challenge to produce the frames properly will be to prepare templates to create the curves and the edges.

Two groups were created and each started to plan how to make the frames. When we started in the workshop, Pascal explained how to use the machines.

1 Record of the meeting in Colmar, January 2015 We met in Lycée Blaise Pascal, Colmar at 9.00 o clock where Pascal Michel welcomed all of us. Pascal introduced us to the project, which this time are two different frames made of ash and cherry. The challenge to produce the frames properly will be to prepare templates to create the curves and the edges. Pascal also introduced us to the French vocational education system which is different from those of the other participating countries. Two groups were created and each started to plan how to make the frames. When we started in the workshop, Pascal explained how to use the machines. Then, we started the production. The wood was collected and each of us started to cut the wood. We worked with ash and with mahogany. Occasionally, every hour the two groups had a short meeting to make sure that there are enough pieces of wood to produce 30 frames.

That is theoretically Pythagoras calculation of an angle. The first day ended with a short meeting where we discussed what we need to do the next day.

2 When a machine goes down, Pascal was rushing to find the problem and to solve the situation. After a few minutes, the machine will run again. Lulu worked on a template which needs to be cut in the 45 angle. We found the angle by using what we call 3x4x5 method. That is theoretically Pythagoras calculation of an angle. 3 the right angle. We solved the problem while bringing the template into position in order to compensate for the blades angle. It took a while but it worked proper at the end. For this task, the group prepared two templates. One for the long side and one for the short one.

Of course, they solved the problem by modifying the template a little bit.

5 Both groups made a big effort to get the frames finished in their own ways. One group had a little trouble to get the inside shape to fit together in the first time. Different ways were discussed and at one point, they made a decision for which method they use.

6 After school, we made a tour to the old city of Colmar. Unfortunately, the museum we wanted to visit was closed. The houses in Colmar, however, were beautiful like this jugendstil house..

At the end for the day we were almost finish with the work on the frames. The one group made holes in the backside so it can hang on the wall.

8 The frames turned out to be very nice at there were many learning elements in it. In addition, the exercise was quite difficult. But, and the end: WE DID IT!
