3 Division of Labor During Build Person One Manage the cut list and mark all measurements. Assist in assembly with person three Person Two Cut wood for base, lifter, and rotator. Lowest platform is worth 1 point, second platform or middle platform is worth 2 points, and the third level or top platform is worth 5 points. Move the cylinder as many times as possible in two minutes. Verify the dimensions of the base and what the length of the arm needs to be to reach both the starting point and the platforms. Work together as a team to clamp, lift, and rotate the machine to move the cylinder to the different level platforms. 15 Consideration of principles of structural strength and stability During the design phase we took great consideration of structural strength and stability. We started with stabilizing the machine by creating tension between the base and the frame on the challenge board. We identified that we needed to reinforce all joints using gussets and extra pieces of wood to the support beams. While designing the rotating mechanism we added a 3 disc and rubber bands under the square platform to improve the balance and counterbalance of the rotating mechanism. We also added shape to the end piece of the clamp on the lifter arm to improve surface clamped on our load. Explanation of placement of fluidic components Our design is based on individual systems assembled into one machine that will perform all functions necessary to successfully complete the challenge. Each individual system uses pneumatics or hydraulics to perform a unique pivot or lever action. The rotating function needs to be hydraulic, the base clamp and the end clamp are pneumatic, and the lifter is successful using pneumatic or hydraulic controls. We designed the placement of all fluid components to have a little friction and create the best mechanical advantage. Evaluation of prototype including conclusions from making it Overall the prototype built has the ability to move the wooden cylinder from the pickup area to any of the platform levels. First clamping the cylinder with the first fluidic component, then the prototype will lift the cylinder and finally rotating the device to place to the wooden cylinder on any of the platforms. In order to accomplish this we went through a number of designs and changes. We identified from the first prototype that rubber bands alone did not hold the square platform efficiently. The rubber bands created too much friction and instability. To solve this we added a 3 disc under the platform. We also identified that our lifter arm was not well balanced when we attempted to lift the cylinder. First we removed the disc on the front of lifter holding the clamp syringe and replaced it with 3 smaller and lighter pieces of wood. Second we added rubber bands under the platform up to the lifter arm to counterbalance the weight as well. Additionally, we added shape to the end piece of the clamp to improve surface contact on cylinder. Original designs included a 2 1/8 disc to lift the arm, while testing we realized that this was not enough force to adequately lift the arm while clamping the cylinder. 14 P a g e
