1 Design brief Adirondack Chair You are to design an Adirondack chair. Your design should be based on plans provided by your teacher. You must select a specific user and location for the chair, identify the needs of the user and revise the plans to suit the user and location. The back of your chair design must include some unique design elements (shapes, colours, lines, etc ) to suit your combination of user and location. Ensure all images and quotes included in your design folio are correctly referenced. Each page must include your name and the section title (e.g. Research and Investigation ) Your design must be achievable with the available materials, tools and equipment. You must be able to construct and finish your design by the end of week 6, term 2. Construction You will construct your chair in two phases: 1. Back of Chair: The back of your chair will be constructed first. Based on the existing plans, the back of your chair may be a different size to suit the needs of your intended user and location. 2. Complete Chair: You will construct and assemble the remainder of the chair to fit the back. You may need to revise measurements from the plans, and you may wish to make minor changes to the plans to suit your design. Evaluation You should complete two separate evaluations: 1. Your design against the design brief: Once you have completed your chair design your must evaluate how well the design meets the given design brief. This evaluates your design skills. 2. Your chair against your design: You will evaluate how closely your finished chair matches your design. This evaluates your construction skills.

2 Design Folio Marking Key Research & Investigation What is an Adirondack chair? Where is an Adirondack chair normally used? What materials are traditionally used to construct an Adirondack chair? Suggested Format: Approximately 250 words, typed, including images, fully referenced. 10% Intended User and Location Who will use the Adirondack chair that you design? What are the specific needs and values of that person? Where will the chair be located? What key factors will affect your design? Consider appearance, function, social and environmental requirements. Suggested Format: Approximately 250 words, typed, optionally including images. 10% Ideas List possible sources for design elements for the back of your chair. Sketch at least 4 ideas for your chair, including titles and notes for each idea. Suggested Format: Approximately 50 words, typed list, with annotated pencil sketches on A4 paper. 20% Concept Development Select a single idea and show at least one detailed sketch of your design. Show both the back of the chair and the entire chair on different sketches. Include detailed notes and approximate dimensions. Suggested Format: Large, neat pencil sketches on A4 paper one sketch per page. 15% Working Drawing Create a detailed, scaled, orthographic drawing of the back of your chair. Include construction notes and accurate dimensions. Suggested Format: Instrument drawing on A3 paper. 25% Production Planning Identify the steps required to construct and finish the entire chair. Write these in order with an estimate of the time required to complete each step. Clearly show when your chair will be finished (allow for holidays, etc ) Revise your estimates as you work, showing your original estimates and the actual time taken for each step. Suggested Format: Table, flowchart or numbered list. 10% Material List & Costing Fully list all materials required for your chair. Using the material costs provided by your teacher, calculate the cost of each part and the total cost for your chair. Suggested Format: Table. 10%
