1 Fan Back How To Assemble Your Chair in 12 Easy Steps Parts List #1 (2) frame, left & right #2 (2) 20" legs, left & right #3 (6) 20" seat slats #4 (1) lower canoe #5 (7) back slats #6 (1) curved seat slat #7 (2) front arm supports #8 (2) back legs, left & right #9 (2) arm rests, left & right #10 (1) middle canoe #11 (1) back arm support #12 (1) top canoe #13 (1) front Skirt Hardware (43) 1-5/8" screws (8) 3" screws (7) 2-1/2" screws (11) 2" screws (2) 2-1/2 bolts (2) washers (2) nuts Tools: Best to use power drill with 2" long #2 phillips bit and 9/16" wrench or crescent wrench Glue: Buy a small bottle of "Tite bond II Premium wood glue, weather proof or something similar. (Lowe's or Home Depot) Note: Directions stating left and right are as you sit in the chair Note: Use 1 5/8" screws unless otherwise stated Note: When driving in screws, make them very snug, but don't let head dig into wood very far or cracking may occur Be patient, and Take Your Time. You will need a flat, solid work surface, such as a table or patio when attaching the legs to ensure that your chair sits level Caution: Rarely, but occasionally a knot may be in the path of a screw, if this happens, the knot will have to be pre drilled, or the screw may break off Assembly Sequence: Layout all pieces as illustrated above Step #1 Using 1 5/8 screws, glue & attach #13 front skirt to the front edge of #1 left & #1 right base supports. 1-5/8 Wood Screw Step #2 Temporarily attach lower canoe #4 to bases as shown in photo. DO NOT glue or tighten the screws all the way. (This is to temporarily hold the two bases 22 apart from front to back). Glue & attach #13 Front Skirt, and the 5 #3 seat slats with 1-5/8 screws. Attach the #6 curved seat ¼ Spacing slat with 1-5/8 screws. Note: Space between slats the seat slats and half round about 1/4 apart. Remove lower canoe #4. 1

2 Page 2 Step #3 Take #4 lower canoe and attach 7, #5 back slats to canoe. Center back slats on canoe. The back slats are numbered 1 through 7. Make sure counter sunk holes on canoe are on top, not on bottom. Also make sure there is a nice rounded curve on top of back slats when fanned out before screwing slats to lower canoe. The pieces should be snug together at the bottom. Use 2 screws. It is ok to let screw dig into wood a little as you attach back Center Back Slats on Lower Canoe with holes on top Use upper canoe for temporary support slats to lower canoe. (You can use middle canoe #10 to temporarily hold up the top end of back slats while positioning and screwing lower end of slats onto lower canoe. 18 between lower canoe and middle canoe) Do not glue the slats to lower canoe Nice Round Curve 1 Step #4 Note: You have limited working time (about 5 or 10 minutes) before the glue begins to tack. To lengthen working time, wipe areas to be glued with a damp rag before applying glue. Apply glue around bolt hole and attach #2 left and right legs to frames using bolts, washer and nut. Counter sunk pre-drilled holes at the top of the legs are on the inside of leg when attached to base. Step #5 Turn base with legs attached right side up and rotate legs so bottom of legs are level with floor. Screw on nuts snuggly, but not tight. You will probably have to slightly rotate legs later in the assembly process. Note: You have limited working time (about 5 or 10 minutes) before the glue begins to tack. To lengthen working time, wipe areas to be glued with a damp rag before applying glue. Step #6 Take the #4 lower canoe with the #5 back slats attached and glue and screw the canoe/back slat assembly to the #1 bases using 2-1 5/8 screws on each side Step 6 Completed with back assembly attached to chair frame

3 Page 3 Step #7 Attaching back legs #8. There is a left and right back leg. Position bottom of leg within the lines drawn on the inside of the base. Top of leg slopes away from back rest. Only fasten each leg with one 1-5/8 screw for now. You will put in the second screw in step #11 Step #8 Take middle canoe #10, glue & lay on top of back legs. Position so pre drilled holes are directly over top of back legs. Back of canoe slightly overhangs back edge of leg. Put one 2 screw in each end while positioning canoe. Drive the second 2 screw in each end once piece is positioned in place. Attach back legs with Only One Screw for this step Step #9 A. Glue and attach #7 front arm supports at the top, center, on the outside of front legs using two screws on the inside of the leg. B. Attach rear arm support #11 to outside of back leg. Top of support is 23 from floor. Support is not centered on width of leg. See dashed line. Flush with top of leg Overhang Slightly 23 Step #10 A. Apply liberal amount of glue on top of front legs. (Wipe up any runs with wet rag after step 11.) B. Place right arm on top of leg and rear support. C. Make sure back end of arm is flush with back edge of back leg. D. 1 over hang on inside of front leg. A. B. C. Flush with back of leg D.

4 Page 4 Step #11 (Repeat Steps 10 and 11 for Left Arm Rest also) A. 1. While pushing down on top of arm with hand, screw a 3 screw up thru arm support. 2. Toe nail a 3 screw (drive screw at an angle) thru top front & back edge of front leg into arm rest. B. Drive 2-1/2 screw into back arm rest support. C. Drive 2 1-5/8 screws into side of back leg into arm rest. Finish tightening bolts on front legs. & putting 2nd screw in bottom of back legs A. B. Attach arms to back arm rest supports with 2-1/2 screws C. Step #12 Fan outside back rest slats out beyond end of middle canoe by 1/4. Screw a 3 screw into ends of middle canoe into outside back slats. Evenly space rest of back slats and screw 5 2 1/2 screws into five remaining seat backs. Attach #12 top canoe about 5 1/2 above middle canoe. 1.Attach arm rests to supports with 3 Screws 2. Toe Nail Screws through front and back edge of front leg with 3 screws Congratulations! 5 Page 5 Finishing Cedar Should you desire a different look, cedar readily accepts most stains, outdoor paints and wood preservatives. While you can varnish outdoor furniture made of oak or other hardwoods, we do not recommend using varnish on cedar: A marine grade spar varnish will work well, but will flake if the furniture gets dented, leaving an unsightly appearance. Clear oil finishes, such as linseed oil, or teak oil work very well, as does a deck sealer such as Thompson's. Clear oil will have to be reapplied every year or two by simply wiping on another coat. A deck sealer will protect the wood from the elements, but unless you use a sealer with UV blockers, will not prevent the wood from turning grey from exposure to the sun. Be sure to read the can carefully to make sure you will get the look you want. If you desire an "old" look for your furniture, but still want to ensure a good long life, a deck sealer without UV protection is a very good choice. Deck sealer will need to be reapplied every couple of years, sometimes more, depending on the amount of wear on the seats and arms of your furniture Cedar will also readily accept most outdoor wood stains and exterior paints. Keep in mind that painted wood furniture, much like a wood fence or wood house siding, will need to be repainted every 5 to 10 years. Always be sure to follow the recommendations of the finish manufacturer. When applying finish, it is ideal to finish the parts before assembly, as it will be difficult to apply finish between the seat and back slats once assembled. Do not apply finish to the areas where glue will be applied! It is recommended that you mask off these areas. Alternatively, you can assemble the major components of your chair before applying the finish: Assemble the seat assembly (frames, seat slats), the back assembly (lower canoe, back slats and top canoe), the front leg assemblies (legs and front arm supports) and the back leg assemblies (back legs and back arm supports), using glue where indicated in the instructions above, before applying the finish. You will stall have to mask off certain areas, such as where the back assembly and the front and back legs attach to the frames, and where the arm rests attach to the front and back legs. Assembling the major components before applying the finish will certainly make applying the finish easier than waiting until the chair is fully assembled.
