1 St. Patrick Church Altar/Ambo Project View progress of our new altar and ambo. From initial design to final construction. Compiled from photos, descriptions, and video from Richard Helgeson

2 Scale Models: Version #1-- Table is scaled to 60" x 60" x 39" high. Human figure is scaled to 5'9" tall. Showing stone top, 8" thick. Legs are Douglas Fir, same material as structure in St. Patricks. Vertical members are 3" thick x 10" wide

3 Version #1--detail at corner

4 Black rough cut granite Version # 2--Same dimensions as #1. Additional element incorporated into top of legs to stand off the stone top.

5 Metal support structure.

6 The altar base has been delivered to my shop after receiving zinc chromate rust proofing treatment. The structure will be well protected. And, no chance of rust staining around the legs of the altar if water is spilled or an over-wet mop wicks water under the base.

7 You can see the bolt holes at the bottom of the leg assemblies. We were allowing for bolting to the floor but that will not be necessary. (These photos were shot with a wide angle lens it distorts perspective. Everything is straight and square.)

8 The altar base has been assembled and I am working on the wood cladding of it.

9 Altar support structure. Ready for wood veneer cladding. Top will be a square slab of black granite.

12 Arched parts are glued and ready to be fit.

13 Fitting the foot on the leg assembly. (The base is set up off the floor on blocks so I can finish sand the legs.)

15 The altar stone is in its crate from Cold Spring. It s a little dusty on top the color is deeper. Looks very impressive in person.

17 Stone panel mounted on standoffs creates shadow between stone and wood ambo.

19 Section through stone panel-- viewed from side of ambo. Front of ambo is to the right. The spacing creates depth and shadow around stone. It also allows space to drape a weighted fabric accent down the center of the stone slab. The fabric would have sewn looped ends, with weighted bars inserted through both ends to counterbalance the runner and hold the fabric straight/taut.

21 Room for shelf in back. The bottom would be relieved to allow toekick space so reader could stand comfortably.

23 Mock-up block with one of St. Patrick s existing microphones. The craft paper is the size of the large books 14 tall.

24 The microphone will snap into the block, which has shock mount rubber isolation built into it. The craft paper indicates where the top of the book will land.

26 The steel will help support the reading surface. It is pierced near the point on the left. A screw will installed vertically, and hold the reading surface to the steel.

29 The ambo has been finished. I think there is a good balance between the protective film and retaining a natural look.

30 Room for shelf in back. The bottom would be relieved to allow toekick space so reader could stand comfortably. Ambo accent stone and steel. It s reflecting overhead fluorescent light and looks a little gray here. Lots of beautiful flecking.
