2 Dorus Adhesives Application Techniques Woodtape offers the complete Dorus line of Hot Melt adhesives for automatic edgebanding applications. The following application hints are offered to help ensure maximum productivity and bond quality. The processing temperature of the adhesive, substrate and edgebanding, and room temperature of the plant in which the edgebander is located are all-important factors. Woodtape recommends all materials to be stored at room temperature for a minimum of twenty-four hours prior to use. Cold panels or banding can result in the premature set-up of the adhesive. The automatic edgebander should not be located in an area in which drafts or cold air are circulating. This could also result in premature adhesive set-up. Evidence of premature set-up could be adhesive bonding well to the substrate but not to the edgebanding. The temperature of the adhesive itself should be checked on a regular basis with a pyrometer to verify the accuracy of the thermostats in the melting container and the application roller. Excessive heat will cause the adhesive to break down and cause charring and odors. Inadequate heat will cause a poor bond. The line speed of the automatic edgebander is also very important. Slower line speeds are more inclined to cause poor bonding than higher speeds. When operating at a low speed, the adhesive may prematurely set-up before pressure is applied to attain a proper bond. Should a line speed slower than specified be necessary, it is recommended the application roller thermostat be turned up slightly to compensate for longer open time. The temperature should not be increased in excess of 10 degrees Centigrade over the recommended application temperature. Hot air blowers could also be located on the bander to further extend adhesive open times. Test runs should be performed to determine the best overall temperature for application based on the line speed being run. Glue line thickness is another factor that should be taken into consideration. An excessively thick glue line will result in a poor bond and leave an unsightly glue line. Tests should be performed to adjust to the thinnest possible glue line while still giving a strong, durable bond. Care should be taken that the glue line Woodtape recommends the glue pot temperature be turned down to approximately 150 degrees Centigrade if the automatic edgebander is not going to be used for an extended period of time. This temperature will keep the hot melt molten, allow for a fast heat up, and will also prevent unnecessary adhesive breakdown and oxidation in the pot. It is also recommended that should the molten adhesive sit for an extended period of time in the pot, it should be stirred or agitated. All panel edges should be cut square and clean. Moisture content of veneers or solid wood edgings should not exceed 10 percent. Woodtape recommends priming all high-pressure laminate before application. A 5:1 mix of solventbased contact adhesive and compatible solvent provide an excellent priming medium. Residue on the backside of high-pressure laminate will often cause weak or poor bonding. Priming will ensure an excellent bond. GLUE POT MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING Woodtape recommends a regular maintenance schedule for glue pots and application rollers. Charred or oxidized adhesives should be removed from the pot sides and glue surface before refilling the pot. The glue pot should be kept a minimum of two-thirds full to reduce charring and oxidation on the pot sides. The glue pot and application heads should be completely and thoroughly cleaned at least every sixty days. Excessive build-up of charred materials will reduce the overall effectiveness of the heaters and impair heat transfer. In order to clean the glue pot; insert a t shaped stick into the pot while the glue is hot. Allow the glue to cool overnight. In the morning when the glue pot is turned on, the adhesive will soften from the bottom and sides. The contents of the glue pot can be lifted out once the bottom and sides of the glue are softened. The pot can then be thoroughly cleaned. 3 AD 096/1 POSTFORMING/LAMINATING: AD 096/1 PVA is a multipurpose postforming/laminating adhesive, offering excellent bonding characteristics for a broad range of applications. Developed specifically for postforming on stationary and continuous feed machines. AD 096/1 has also proven very successful in continuous feed lamination. VENEER, HIGH PRESSURE LAMINATE Viscosity 70 F. : 6,200 6,700 ph - Value : Minimum Film Forming Temperature : Approximately 60 F Solid Content : 65% Machine Line Speed : Up to 30m/minute PACKAGING: 60 lbs. Plastic Jugs. 1. Nozzle size should give even, thin spray application. Do not dilute AD 096/1 adjust nozzle size. 2. Material should be formed immediately after spraying. Adhesive must be tacky for best performance. 3. Do not over-cure adhesive. Too much heat/pressure will cause delamination. May be stored for up to 12 months in original closed containers. 4 AS 223 EDGEBANDING/PRE-COATING: AS 223 is an EVA based Hot Melt specially formulated for pre-coating of edgebanding materials. This product should be used on automatic edgebanders that apply the adhesive directly to the edgebanding. The low application temperature and fast drying characteristics make AS 223 an ideal product for pre-coating of PVC and other thermo-plastic edgebandings as well as veneers and saturated paper products. AS 223 is economically priced and easy to apply. 5 DD 060 DOWEL INSERTION: DD 060 is a multi-purpose, low viscosity PVA adhesive formulated for use in both low and high-pressure dowel insertion systems. It is suitable for use in plywood, MDF, and particleboard. It offers good flow characteristics and very fast set up times with high bond strength. D 060 will not clog or block nozzle during application. DD 060 is also recommended for automatic knot hole filling and dovetail joint assembly equipment. Base : PVAc Dispersion *Viscosity - 20ºC : 225 mpas Minimum film forming temperature : 3ºC *According to Epprecht Viscometer TV/R2 and R3 Compression Ratio : 2:1 DD 060 is ready to use. Do not add water. Stir before use. The temperature and composition of substrate may affect adhesive set up times. It is recommended for optimum set up times that all materials be stored at room temperature for a minimum of 24 hours before use. PACKAGING: 23 lb. plastic jug with screw cap. 6 Dorus PVA Adhesive Express Superior ASSEMBLY ADHESIVE Express Superior is a PVA dispersion glue designed to produce tough and elastic bonds in joining wood to wood materials in the assembly of furniture and other wood products. PROPERTIES AND FIELDS OF APPLICATION: The product is specially formulated for corpus-assembly work and features extremely short bonding times. It may be used with cold or elevated temperatures, i.e. in the bonding of veneer and high-pressure laminates. It is also for dowels and other joining practices. It is also suitable for the bonding of laminates to particleboard. DORUS EXPRESS SUPERIOR is delivered as a ready-to-use-product. It may be applied by brush, roller or coating applicator. CLEANING: Application tools may be cleaned with cold or luke-warm water, before DORUS EXPRESS SUPERIOR is completely dry. Dry EXPRESS SUPERIOR must be removed mechanically. Closed original packages, stored in a cool and dry room have a storage life of up to 12 months. Protect against frost. Stir well before using. IDENTIFICATION: According to German working material regulations, an identification is not required. The above data are the result of our own experience and tests. 7 HKP 21 HKP 25 EDGEBANDING - CARTRIDGES Dorus is the original manufacturer of Cartridge Adhesives for Holz-Her automatic edgebanding machines. HKP 21 and HKP 25 were specifically formulated for and approved by Holz-Her. The viscosity, spread, and flow characteristics of these Cartridges were specially developed in conjunction with Holz-Her. 8 HKP 26 PUR EDGEBANDING CARTRIDGE: HKP 26 is a multi-purpose reactive PUR (Polyurethane) based Hot Melt adhesive developed in cartridge form and formulated for Holz-Her Edgebanders. PUR s offer extremely high heat resistance as well as moisture and solvent resistance. PUR s cure by cross-linking with the humidity in the air and moisture in the panel, turning into an unmeltable, undisolvable thermoset glue line. HKP 26 offers excellent initial tack and a virtually invisible glue line. Once opened HKP 26 has to be consumed within 2 days. PACKAGING: 6 Cartridges/Carton - Each cartridge is sealed in an airtight bag. CLEANING: Machinery used for polyurethane Hot Melt application must be cleaned after the operation by passing an EVA-based Hot Melt like HKP 21 through the system. Necessity for cleaning after last operation varies from several hours to a few days depending on air humidity and environmental temperature. Cured PUR Hot Melt may be softened by an appropriate solvent like dimethylformamide and subsequently removed mechanically. The shelf life is at least 6 months, if stored cool and absolutely airtight. Hazard warning labeling according to EEC Directives: Zn (Harmful) contains Isocyanates. May cause sensitization by inhalation. Do not breathe fumes. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water and soap. The recommended working temperatures should not be surpassed for any length of time. Overheating causes cracking of the Hot Melt and burning may form harmful by-products. Vapors should be sucked off. 9 KS 201/4 EDGEBANDING/SOFTFORMING KS 201/4 is a high viscosity, multi-purposed EVA based Hot Melt, offering extremely high heat resistance. It was formulated specifically for use in automatic edgebanding equipment and is recommended for both normal edgebanding as well as soft forming. Its high viscosity and high application temperatures make it most suitable for larger or newer automatic edgebanding equipment. The spread and flow characteristics permit standard as well as very high feed speeds to be run without stringing. KS 201/4 is a premium grade, state of the art Hot Melt for automatic edgebanding applications. 10 KS 205 EDGEBANDING: KS 205 is a high viscosity, EVA - rubber based Hot Melt adhesive specially formulated for use in automatic edgebanding equipment. This premium grade Hot Melt has been modified with a rubber additive to provide an exceptionally strong and durable multi-purpose Hot Melt adhesive. KS 205 is recommended for all straightline edgebanding applications. 13 KS 217 EDGEBANDING: KS 217 is a low viscosity, EVA based Hot Melt specially formulated for use in automatic edgebanding equipment. This Hot Melt is strongly recommended for use in granular feed or quick step Hot Melt systems. The low viscosity of KS 217, fast melting properties, and easy spread and flow characteristics make it ideally suited for smaller or older automatic edgebanding equipment. This superior quality Hot Melt shows excellent wetting properties and superior bonding strength. KS 217 should run at moderate to high line speeds and is formulated not to string. 14 KS 224 EDGEBANDING: KS 224 is a low viscosity, EVA -Hot Melt adhesive specially formulated for use in manual edgebanding equipment where the adhesive is applied directly to the edgebanding material. It s low application temperature enables thin PVC ( thickness and up) application on contoured components, without stringing or charring in the pot. It is not recommended for high-speed or automatic edgebanding machine application. 15 KS 275/2 Polyolefin EDGEBANDING/SOFTFORMING KS 275/2 is a low viscosity, multi-purpose, POLYOLEFINE based Hot Melt adhesive formulated for both straightline and softform applications in newer automatic edgebanding equipment. This state of the art adhesive provides excellent heat resistance and coverage, clean processing, and tight glue joints. It is recommended for line speeds in excess of 60 feet per minute and can be applied with standard edgebander glue application systems. 16 KS 350 EDGEBANDING/SOFTFORMING KS 350 is an unfilled, "clear", multi-purpose, EVA based hot melt adhesive formulated for straightline and softform applications. It is recommended for newer or larger automatic edgebanders. KS 350 offers clean application without stringing, even at high production speeds, while providing very high heat resistance. As KS 350 is a very low viscosity product, consumption is reduced; substantially increasing yield. KS 350 provides a tight, thin invisible glue line with excellent performance qualities. Due to the very low viscosity of KS 350, a special "fine grid" adhesive application roller is required to utilize this product. The grid pattern should be.8mm to 1.0mm in size. 17 ND 183/1 EDGEBANDING PRIMER: DORUS ND 183/1 Primer is a PVA (water) based dispersion product suitable for priming solid woods, highpressure laminate and other difficult-to-bond edgings. ND 183/1 significantly improves adhesion characteristics, even on tropical, oily, and resinous woods. SOLID WOOD, VENEERS, HPL Viscosity : 6-8 mpas (Epprecht Viscosimeter-TV/Ms r1) ph - Value : 9-10 Application Weight : 20g/sqm (wet) Means of Application : Nozzle, brush, application roller, spray pistol (or in absence of the above, a simple rag) Drying Time : At least one hour It does not help to apply more primer than recommended; in fact, application of quantities beyond 30 g/sqm could reduce adhesion CLEANING: You may wash off ND 183/1 with hot water, preferably containing a tenside (dishwashing agent). Dry ND 183/1 must be removed mechanically or with a solvent such as Ethyl Acetate. (Use solvents only if your application gear is resistant to solvents). ND 183/1 has a storage life of about six months in closed original containers. Store in a cool room and protect against frost. ND 183/1 contains water and may freeze in cold temperatures. IDENTIFICATION: According to the German Working Materials Regulations, an identification is not required. The above data is the result of our experiences and tests. 18 Q 621 EDGEBANDING / SOFTFORMING Q 621 is a medium viscosity, multi-purpose, EVA based Hot Melt specially formulated for use in automatic edgebanding equipment. PUR s offer extremely high heat resistance as well as moisture and solvent resistance. PUR s cure by cross-linking with the humidity in the air and moisture in the panel, turning into an unmeltable, undisolvable thermoset glue line. RS 270/1 offers excellent initial tack and a virtually invisible glue line. Special application equipment is required to apply PUR adhesives.
