FOR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY Chemical Resistance Resistance to dry heat up to 150 F. Excellent resistance to weather, oil spills, and petroleum. Good resistance to moisture, abrasion and solvents. Chemical fumes do very well in sulfide resistant colors. Surface Preparation Dependent on coating use. Refer to SURFACE PREPARATION Section. Application Apply by air assisted airless, HVLP, or conventional spray (where local regulations permit). Brush or roller only recommended for field repair. Colors Standard shop colors. Custom matches available upon request. Recommended Film Thickness Up to 3.0 mils DFT per coat. 3 TECHNICAL BULLETIN AREA OF USAGE Recommended for the refinish market, trailer, fleet, and OEM. Excellent product for industrial coating of machinery and equipment. Provides a flexible tough finish with easy clean up. CHEMICAL RESISTANCE Water Salt Petroleum Oil Solvents NOTE: Although 1600 SERIES exhibits resistance to the above environments, this list is not meant to imply an express guarantee in actual service. It is recommended that the user contact Ponderosa Paint Company for specific recommendations when severe exposure is expected. THINNING Water is recommended. Spray Application Do not over thin! For airless equipment no reduction is necessary. For pressure pot conventional or electrostatic guns, reduce 10% (12 oz. per gal.). Use 5-10 lbs. pot pressure for adequate paint flow rate and adjust atomizing air to get proper fan width and particle size. If you don t get a good fan pattern, add more water, a little at a time. Viscosity drops very fast and over-reduction will cause sagging. For HVLP a little more reduction may be necessary, perhaps as much as 10% (3 oz. per qt.). Brush or Roller Application Not recommended SURFACE PREPARATION Steel Clean the surface thoroughly to remove oil, grease, wax, dirt, etc. Acid-etch prime galvanized parts. Prime aluminum with an acid etch primer. Bare steel should be primed (waterborne primers are recommended). Body filler may be used, but care must be taken to ensure that it is properly catalyzed. Under-cured body filler may cause primer to lift. For best results use polyester filler. Surfaces previously painted with synthetic enamels or water reducible enamels may be recoated without sanding, although scuff sanding is recommended. Re-painting over catalyzed paints, like urethanes and epoxies, scuff sanding is necessary for good adhesion. Be sure to remove sanding dust with a tack rag. If you are in doubt about what the old finish might be, sand it prior to repainting. EQUIPMENT Spray Application 1. All spray equipment should be thoroughly cleaned and the hose, in particular, should be free of old paint film and other contaminants. 2. It is recommended that the operator provide himself with clean coveralls and rubber soled shoes and observes good personal hygiene. Certain personnel may be sensitive to various types of resins, which may cause dermatitis. 2. 4 TECHNICAL BULLETIN mist. When working in tanks, rooms and other enclosed spaces, adequate ventilation must be provided. Keep out of the reach of children. 3. CAUTION: Read and follow all caution statements on this product technical bulletin, material safety data sheet and container label for this product. MIXING If catalyzing use 1600 Hardener at a ratio of 8 parts 1600 to 1 part hardener and thin with 2 parts water. If using either 1600 Accelerator* or 1600 Retarder* add up to 5%. NOTE: Always thin after adding hardener or additives. * The addition of accelerator or retarder may result in a non-compliant ready to spray VOC. Verify with local regulations prior to use. APPLICATION PROCEDURE 1. Surface should be dry and clean. Free of dirt, grease, old loose scaling paint and anything that might interfere with adhesion. Prime bare metal. The surface preparation method selected will depend on the required degree of cleanliness defined by SSPC specifications. 4. Always work wet. The first coat should be a thin wet coat. The fog coat or tack coat usually used with high solvent containing paints is not recommended. Water-reducible enamel will not re-dissolve the dried paint droplets of a fog coat. After the first thin coat has set up a bit, apply your final coat. 5. Recommended for application up to 2.0 mils dry film thickness per coat. Heavy applications exceeding this thickness may result in slow dry. 6. For re-paint work with areas of bare metal or primer here and there, it is best to shoot a quick wet pass on each of those areas, allow 15 minutes tack time, and then apply a full wet coat overall. 7. Equipment should be thoroughly cleaned with tap water. Rinse the pot or cup and flush the gun, spraying into your booth filters. Follow with clean water, spraying until no more color shows. Before you store the gun, you may want to flush out the water with a little acetone. INSPECTION Degree of surface preparation and film thickness shall conform to appropriate specifications outlined in SURFACE PREPARATION and RECOMMENDED FILM THICKNESS sections. 2. Water-reducible primers dry fast and may be top coated as soon as all water is out of the film, usually in less than one hour. If in doubt, feel the surface with the back of your hand. If it feels cold, water is still evaporating. When it returns to normal temperature, primer is ready to be top coated. 3. With water-reducible enamels, you will be shooting unreduced or very slightly reduced paint, so it will take fewer passes to get coverage (at the same rate of fluid flow than most solvent paints). Instead of a tack coat and two wet coats, you will use just two wet coats for any job. Ponderosa Paint Company warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship.
