2 Material A fence is comprised of a series of panels connected to each other by posts. The list of materials presented in this guide is for making one panel, and includes only one support post. Calculate a panel and post unit by 100 inches length of ground to be enclosed, then an additional post to fi nish the fence. At the time of the installation, the posts are inserted in holes of 8 to 10 in diameter and 42 of depth. Dig with a mechanical hole digger (auger), and then fi ll with concrete or stone dust. The panels are then screwed directly to the posts or are slipped into beam brackets. It is suggested that you use cedar to build this fence, as it is very weather resistant. You can also build the fence with treated wood. However, treated wood does not have the rich look that natural cedar does. 3 Cutting - Cut three 2 x 4 at a length of 76 1 /2 - Cut four 2 x 4 at a length of 45 3 /4 - Cut eighteen 1 x 6, 45 3 /4 long - Cut eighteen 1 x 6, 36 long Sand the surfaces of the cut parts to smooth the edges, and to avoid splinters. 4 Assembly Top section 1 Determine the angle that the 1 x 6 x 45 3 /4 planks (shutters) will be tilted, according to the required amount of privacy. However, these planks should not exceed the width of the 2 x 4 on which they will be attached. Make a stencil to trace the lines of this angle (e.g. cut out the desired triangle slope on a piece of cardboard). 39" 3 /4" 3 /4" 2 Draw the shutter lines on both sides of the 2 x 4 x 76 1 /2 parts at regular intervals, on 39 of length, anticipating a space of 3 /4 above and below the shutters. 3 Screw the ends of the three marked 2 x 4 x 76 1 /2 to a 2 x 4 x 96 : one at each end and one at the centre. 2" x 4" x 76 1 /2" 4 Insert 1 X 6 X 45 3 /4 planks between the fi rst two vertical studs, by aligning them on the lines traced previously, and screw from the sides, by referring to the lines that were drawn on the back. 5 Insert 1 X 6 X 45 3 /4 planks between the last two vertical studs. Only the end touching the outside stud can be screwed from the side. The end touching the central stud will have to be screwed at an angle. Note: It is possible, with a little patience and a sliding mitre saw with adjustable height (or a router), to make 1 /4 deep slits in the vertical studs, along the traced lines, to insert the planks which should then be 1 /2 longer, for a total of 1 x 6 x 46 1 /4. This avoids using screws, and improves the fi nish. If the planks need to be solidifi ed, simple small fi nishing nails are enough to keep them in place. page 4

5 Assembly (cont d) Bottom section 6 Lay two 2 x 4 x 45 3 /4 parts on the ground parallel to each other, and separated by 26 1 /2 from center to center (23 from one interior edge to another). 7 Place a fi rst plank of 1 x 6 x 36 on these parts, 1 3 /4 from the end of the 2 x 4, then place the other planks by spacing them 3 1 /2» from one another. The top of these planks must be 3 from the edge of the 2 X 4. Screw. 1 3 /4" 3 1 /2" 23" 3" 8 Repeat the process with the back of this assembly, by positioning the planks so as to cover the spaces left between the planks of the overleaf. Always leave 3 1 /2 between the planks. 9 Repeat steps 7, 8 and 9 to make the second panel. 10 Screw these assemblies between the studs. The bottom of the planks must be level with the bottom of the 2 x 4 x Attach this panel to the 4 X 4 posts. page 5
