1 Volume 29, Issue 1 January 8, 2011 Plane News Special points of interest: From the President Cover Featured Speaker Summer Picnic Scheduled Christmas Party Photos Kerry Pierce Woodworking Instruction Schedule January 8th Featured Speaker Nick Engler For my presentation on January 8, I'm going to boil down the combined woodworking wisdom in all 53 of my books to just 14 simple tips. Really. I also hope to bring Shopsmith's latest "PowerPro" headstock for those Shopsmith owners who would like to see it. Nick Engler January 2011 From the President The holidays have come and gone. Its seems the older I get the faster this season flies by. I trust that all of you and your families have had a happy and memorable holiday season. The Holiday Party and our annual toy-making project appeared to be a great success. My special thanks to Mike Quinn and Dan Strohecker for the great job they did organizing and carrying through with the delivery of all those beautiful toys. Special thanks also to Dan for overseeing the wheel and axle program as well. It was gratifying to see such a large turnout. And lastly a very large Thank You" to all the members who constructed and donated all the toys. I'm proud of all of you but each of you should be proud of the fact that you helped brightened the Christmas morning of nearly 2,000 children. Our January 8th, 2011, meeting will feature nationally recognized woodworker and author Mr. Nick Engler. Nick has published 53 woodworking books and a multitude of articles in various woodworking magazines. Many of you may recall the hardbound multi-volume set he published several years ago, "The Workshop Companion." Nick believes in a balance between hand and power tool woodworking. His lectures and demos are quite engaging and very instructive. He will be discussing his "14 Commandments of Woodworking" (that s four more than we got the last time). He also is currently associated with the Shopsmith Company and will shed light on the current status of Shopsmith and he plans to show us a brand new lathe head that will soon be marketed. Our club application to the Annual Community Craftsman Award has been completed and is in the mail. My thanks to members Ed Robold, Mike Quinn, Dan Strohecker, Steve Sattler, and Tom Quertinmont who took the time to supply pictures of club activities and projects to accompany the application. Let s keep our fingers crossed on this one. It would be a great honor if our club is selected. Lastly, and I truly hate to bring this up, but as of this writing, 39 members have yet to pay their dues for That represents nearly 25 percent of the club membership. I also realize that we are in an economic slump as a nation, so if you still want to be a member but can t afford it, please talk to Mike Ware, our treasurer, so we can work something out. For the rest of you, there will be a call from my uncle Louie from Steubenville setting up a meeting time at a local Italian restaurant (a word of caution: wear knee pads). A healthy and happy 2011 to each of you and your families. I m looking forward to seeing each of you Saturday January 8, 2011, at the Spring Road Church. Chuck Caranna

2 Plane News 2 WOCO Delaware Sub Chapter News Those of you who were not able to make it to the WOCO Christmas Banquet sure missed a good time! As usual, there was a good turnout and, also as usual, the food and drink were delicious. If anyone decided not to come because they weren't certain they'd enjoy themselves, I would heartily recommend you mark your calendar for next December's as it appeared everyone went home quite pleased with the get together and especially the choral singers entertainment that followed dinner. By the way, Mike Quinn announced that there were more than 1,800 wooden toys turned in, about 100 more than last year. Way to go fellows and gals! After the meeting, Fred Ball of Westerville asked to join the Delaware group and of course I am delighted to add his name to our list. Chuck Caranna likes to call us the Delaware Over Achievers and it appears Fred is one too! Welcome aboard, Fred! Chair Riser Program with Lou Gatch Delaware Group including: Marion Ackerman Mike McIntee Dan McIver Tom Quirtinmont Steve Sattler Dan Strohecker Don Wenzlik Sets Ivan Dangler Leon Gage Ed Razler... 6 " Glen Rudie " Total as of November 13, Sets Please continue to securely tie each set of four in a plastic grocery bag. A 3 1/8 dia Forstner drill bit is available for member use in lieu of routing the pocket. Contact me if I erred or failed to give out drawing tickets. Thank you for supporting this program. Lou Gatch Our next meeting will be on Saturday, February the 12th. More on that next month. Also, please remember that the WOCO Summer Picnic has been scheduled for the 9th of July from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hannah Park in Gahanna. You might want to mark that down on your calendar, too. It'll be a good time, guaranteed! Guess that about wraps it up for this year. Sincere best wishes to each and every one of you this Christmas season and in Steve Sattler (740) Mark Your Calendars! 3 Plane News 3 Furniture Bank of Central Ohio A dedicated group of WOCO volunteers has been working at the Furniture Bank once a week making dressers. At the same time, we ve been looking for ways to improve the product and the manufacturing process to increase output. After a great deal of work (thanks to Lou Gatch, Dave Chenault and others), we are close to implementing the changes which we hope will help us to reach the goal of 30 dressers per month. Once we achieve that number, we ll try to increase the output even more. The need is that great! To accomplish this, we need more volunteers from WOCO. We currently have one group of seven people who work each Tuesday from about 9 a.m. to 3 or 3:30 p.m. (taking off for lunch, of course). We would like to form at least one more team of seven people who can work on another day. At the meeting in January, we ll be passing around a signup sheet for volunteers. Please consider supporting your club in this very worthwhile endeavor. If you cannot volunteer every week but would consider working from time to time as a substitute, we need you as well. If you cannot come during the week and would like to volunteer on Saturday mornings, please let us know that. Working at the Furniture Bank is sometimes tiring but is always rewarding as we help our club fulfill its mission of providing service to our community using our woodworking skills. Mike Quinn Library Update WOCO Librarian John Herrel is working to update and maintain WOCO s lending library a wealth of resources for WOCO members. This is an enormous task. If you have any books out or if you would like to donate items for the library, please see John at the January meeting so all book records can be verified. Thanks!

4 Plane News 4 Holiday Toy Program Once again, thanks to the dedication, generosity and hard work of the WOCO members who participated, we finished the year with excellent results from our Holiday Toy Program. The final tally is slightly higher than the number announced at the Christmas party. We set a record with 1,830 toys being produced and donated to the five organizations we support. This year, we had 57 members who made toys, either individually, in groups or both. Although slightly down from last year s 59 participants, this still represents a fine level of involvement for the club. Of the 57 people who made toys, seven participated for the first time and 13 participated for their second year. This bodes well for the future of the program as more and more people begin to get involved. If you have not yet made toys for the program or haven t done so for the last few years, I invite you to get started in This is a great community service project of our club and I know the children who receive these gifts truly appreciate your efforts. We had six toy-making groups operating in Working in a group is a good way to get to know your fellow club members and to learn new skills and techniques. We ll be putting together groups again this year and hope to expand this part of the program. Another goal this year is to try to put together guidelines to follow in making toys, including things like finish selection, allowable sizes for loose parts, length of pull ropes, etc. We ll keep you posted. The following members contributed to the success of this year s toy program: Marion Ackerman Chris Amatos Fred Ball Ben Bennett Walt Betley Gary Bogart Chuck Caranna Dave Cenault Jack Chenoweth Bob Cole Gordon Correia Wayne Cuthbert Ivan Dangler Butch Deems Robert Engle John Fair Henry Fisher Leon Gage Lou Gatch Joe Goodwin Peter Grace Ron Grady John Herrel JD Lynn Phil Lynn Ron Mack Mary Kay Marsh Mike McIntee Dan McIver Nelson Meyer Bill Miller Bob Morrison Chuck Murray Ross Petitto Jerry Plasenthal Tom Quertinmont Mike Quinn Ed Razler Craig Renkert Ed Robold Keith Rogers David Rouse Steve Sattler Ed Shaffer Mike Simpson Larry Smith Lou Spezialetti Dan Strohecker John Thill Jim Tippie Mike Totsch Jim Walters Rosie Wendt Don Wenzlik George Whited Joan Whited Joe Yusko Remember, it s not too early to be thinking about your toys for next year. Who knows with a few more people participating, we may be able to crack the 2,000 barrier. Mike Quinn
