Breathig excessive amouts of respirable silica dust ca also cause a disablig ad potetially fatal lug disease called silicosis, ad has bee liked with other diseases. Some studies suggest smokig may icrease these risks. Durig istallatio or hadlig: (1) work i outdoor areas with ample vetilatio; (2) miimise dust whe cuttig by usig either score ad sap kife, fibre cemet shears or, where ot feasible, use a HardieBlade Saw Blade (or equivalet) ad dust-reducig circular saw attached to a appropriate, well maitaied, filtered vacuum; (3) war others i the iediate area to avoid breathig dust; (4) wear a properlyfitted, approved dust mask or respirator (e.g. P1 or P2) i accordace with applicable govermet regulatios ad maufacturer istructios to further limit respirable silica exposures. Durig clea-up use a vacuum ad filter, both of which are well maitaied ad appropriate for capturig fie (respirable) dust. Alteratively, use wet clea-up methods - ever dry sweep. For maximum protectio (lowest respirable dust productio) James Hardie recoeds always usig best practice cuttig methods where feasible. 2. NEVER use a power saw idoors. 3. ALWAYS use a circular saw blade that carries the HardieBlade logo or is of at least comparable performace. 4. NEVER dry sweep - Use wet suppressio or appropriate vacuum ad filter. 5. NEVER use griders. 6. ALWAYS follow tool maufacturers safety recoedatios. DUST MASKS AND RESPIRATORS James Hardie recoeds the use of P2 respirators as best practice. As a miimum, a AS/NZS1716 P1 respirator must be used whe doig ay activity that may create dust. P1 or P2 respirators should be used i cojuctio with the above cuttig practices to miimise dust exposure. For further iformatio, refer to Safety Data Sheet (SDS) available at If cocer still exists about exposure levels or you do ot comply with the above practices, you should always cosult a qualified idustrial hygieist or cotact James Hardie for further iformatio. 4 STORAGE AND HANDLING To avoid damage, all James Hardie buildig products should be stored with edges ad corers of the product protected from chippig. James Hardie buildig products must be istalled i a dry state ad protected from weather durig trasport ad storage. The product must be laid flat uder cover o a smooth level surface clear of the groud to avoid exposure to water, moisture, etc. INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE Geeral Scyo Matrix claddig cosists of Scyo istalled over weather barrier to which the pre-sealed Scyo Matrix paels are fixed. Expressed vertical ad horizotal joits are created to produce a paelised look. This guide covers the use of the Scyo Matrix claddig i a residetial facade applicatio over a seasoed timber or a light-gauge steel frame. Scyo Matrix claddig is ot suitable for slopig walls or o a diagoal orietatio. DESIGN Geeral All desig ad costructio must comply with the appropriate requiremets of the curret Buildig Code of Australia (BCA) ad other applicable regulatios ad stadards. Resposibility The specifier or other party resposible for the project must esure that the details i this specificatio are appropriate for the iteded applicatio ad that additioal detailig is performed for specific desig or ay areas that fall outside the scope of this specificatio. Slab ad footigs The slab ad footigs o which the buildig is situated must comply with AS 2870 Residetial slabs ad footigs Costructio ad the requiremets of the Buildig Code of Australia (BCA). Groud clearaces Istall James Hardie exteral claddig with a miimum 150 clearace to the earth o the exterior of the buildig or i accordace with local buildig codes if greater tha 150 is required. Maitai a miimum 50 clearace betwee James Hardie exteral claddig ad roofs, decks, paths, steps ad driveways. Adjacet fiished grade must slope away from the buildig i accordace with local buildig codes, typically a miimum slope of 50 miimum over the first metre. Do ot istall exteral claddig such that it may remai i cotact with stadig water. NOTE Greater clearace may be required i order to comply with termite protectio provisios, see below for more iformatio. Termite Protectio The BCA specifies the requiremets for termite barriers. Where the exposed slab edge is used as part of the termite barrier system, a miimum of 75 of the exposed slab edge must be visible to permit ready detectio of termite etry. MOISTURE MANAGEMENT Geeral It is the resposibility of desiger or specifier to idetify moisture related risks associated with ay particular buildig desig. Wall costructio desig must effectively maage moisture, accoutig for both the iterior ad exterior eviromets of the buildig, particularly i buildigs that have a higher risk of wid drive rai peetratio or that are artificially heated or cooled. I additio all wall opeigs, peetratios, juctios, coectios, widow sills, heads ad jambs must icorporate appropriate flashig ad waterproofig. Flashig All wall opeigs, peetratios, itersectios, coectios, widow sills, heads ad jambs must be flashed prior to claddig istallatio. FRAMING Geeral Frame set-out ad costructio is a importat aspect to cosider whe plaig the istallatio of Scyo Matrix claddig. The way you istall the paels will affect the way you build the frame. Scyo Matrix paels ad Scyo are istalled either o or off stud, refer to Figures 4 ad 5. Whe istallig o stud, the vertical pael joits are located cetrally over the Scyo. For this method of istallatio it is importat that the stud set-out accurately matches the vertical joit locatios. Alteratively, for the off-stud istallatio method, oggigs must be istalled at 800 maximum cetres, see Figure 5. The oggigs must be aliged with the exterior plae of the frame to esure that a flush surface is provided to accoodate the istallatio of the Scyo. Off stud fixig is ot suitable i high wid loads, see Table 1. This table specifies the maximum stud spacigs for Scyo Matrix claddig for Australia wid load classificatios of AS 4055 Wid Loads for Housig. Timber Use of timber framig must be i accordace with AS Residetial timber-framed costructio ad the framig maufacturer s specificatios. Use oly seasoed timber. Useasoed timber must ot be used because it is proe to shrikage ad ca cause sheets ad frames to move. Timber used for house costructio must have the level of durability appropriate for the relevat climate ad expected service life ad coditios icludig exposure to isect attacks or to moisture, which could cause decay. Stud framig members must be a miimum of 70x35, Steel Use of steel framig must be i accordace with NASH stadard for Residetial ad Low-Rise Steel Framig Part 1: Desig Criteria ad the framig maufacturer s specificatios. Framig members must have a base metal thickess (BMT) betwee 0.55 to 1.6. The steel framig must have the appropriate level of durability required to prevet corrosio. For iformatio relatig to the suitability of James Hardie s HardieBreak thermal strip, refer to the HardieBreak Istallatio Guide at Toleraces Esure frame is square ad work from a cetral datum lie. Frames must be straight ad true to provide a flush face to receive the paels. A suggested maximum tolerace of betwee 3 ad 4 i ay 3000 legth of frame will give best results, see Figure 1. Scyo Matrix claddig will ot straighte excessively warped or distorted frames ad ay warpig may still be visible after the claddig is applied. All fasteers specified should be drive flush as show i Figure 2. The Scyo may be istalled either o or off stud, refer to framig sectio for more iformatio ad Figures 4 ad 5. OPTION 1: O-stud fixig For o-stud fixig the Scyo is istalled directly to stud over the weather barrier, see Figure 4. For fasteer ad stud spacigs, refer to Table 1. JH BACKING STRIP INSTALLATION Geeral At horizotal pael joits, the JH backig strip is boded to the back of the Scyo Matrix paels to form a socket to which the ext course of paels are fixed over. The lower side of the JH backig strip ca be boded usig either James Hardie joit sealat or double sided backig tape, see Figures 11 ad 12. Esure all surfaces are free of dust ad grime. NOTE: The sealat applied to the backig strip below the stop must be fully cured before the pael is istalled. Apply a cotiuous 6 diameter bead of polyurethae sealat to the backig strip below the stop Sealat must be cured before istallig Matrix pael FIGURE 11 JOINT SEALANT OPTION 1 Esure backig strip is 5 shorter tha Matrix pael width each side OPTION 2: Double sided backig tape optio This method ivolves applyig a cotiuous strip of 3M 12.7 wide 4905VHB or Hekel C3 12 double sided tape to the lower side of the JH backig strip, see Figure 12. James Hardie recoeds the surfaces are cleaed with the 3M HIPA clea 300 adhesive cleaer, i accordace with the maufacturer s recoedatios. Protective seal Fix JH backig strip to Matrix pael Apply double-sided tape to lower side of the JH backig strip ad remove protective seal. FIGURE 12 DOUBLE SIDED BACKING TAPE OPTION 2 Whe the paels are ready to be istalled, apply James Hardie joit sealat behid the JH backig strip ad a cotiuous filler of James Hardie joit sealat alog the top edges of the pael, see Figure 13. This detail is applicable for both the sealat ad double sided backig tape optios. Matrix pael Whe istallig, apply 6 diameter sealat bead betwee back of the backig strip ad Scyo. Cotiue bead oto back of pael. Istall pael before sealat cures to esure bod. Apply a cotiuous filler of sealat alog the top edges of the pael JH backig strip Sealat fill the back of the rolled stop at each ed 50 log. James Hardie joit sealat FIGURE 13 SEALING JH BACKING STRIP END DETAIL SCYON MATRIX PANEL INSTALLATION Note: You must esure the product is of acceptable quality prior to istallatio, see Importat Note 3. Geeral The Scyo Matrix paels must be fixed to the Scyo. The Scyo Matrix paels ca be istalled i a horizotal or vertical orietatio. The paels are istalled with a 10 expressed joit betwee adjacet paels, vertically ad horizotally. Whe istallig the Scyo Matrix paels, the clear surface of the Scyo Matrix pael faces the frame. I order to seal cut edges or saded patches, two coats of a appropriate primer should be applied at the time of cuttig or sadig compatible with fiish coatig eg. Wattyl s Kill Rust Heavy Duty Primer, Dulux AcraPrime 501/1 (water based) or equivalet. The followig istallatio steps outlie the fixig of the Scyo Matrix paels to the Scyo. Also refer to Figures for further iformatio. 7 Scyo Matrix pael fasteers The followig fixig optios are used to fix the Matrix paels to the Scyo (also see Figures 19-22): 1. C25 16 gauge or 25 DA 304 stailess steel brad ails x30 corrosio resistat fibre cemet ails. 2.6 x 32 galvaised or stailess steel twist shak ail with a miimum roud head diameter of x 25 stailess steel coutersuk chipboard screw square drive / eedle poit screw wafer, pa or hex head stailess steel eedle poit screws. NOTE: Whe usig brad ails esure that brad ails are ot used i high wid areas, see Table 1. I all optios, a cotiuous bead of James Hardie joit sealat is applied to the Scyo to fix the back of the Matrix pael to the Scyo, see Figure 16. For screw fasteers, a clearace hole must be created usig a 6 masory drill. For coutersuk screws, the fasteer must also be coutersuk 2.5 to 3 below the Scyo Matrix pael s surface, see Figure 21. The coutersuk fasteer is the flushed fiished with epoxy ad the with James Hardie base coat. Use oly prove epoxies for this applicatio, i.e. Megapoxy P1 or Hilti CA 125.
