A costume is anything that has been worn or altered prior to the tournament with a specific solution in mind. Graphics on shirts or other clothing are acceptable, as long as they do not contribute in any way to the Challenge solution. e. A clean copy of this Challenge may be brought to the Presentation Site. It must be without team notes. < 70 > 2015 DESTINATION IMAGINATION, INC. DESTINATIONIMAGINATION.ORG

7 B. SPECIAL RULES FOR IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGES CLOSE ENCOUNTERS 1. Honoring the Intent of this Challenge: The intent of this Challenge is to create a unique improvisational Skit based on the specific combination of Elements selected at the tournament. Prior to the tournament the team is encouraged to prepare for the many possible combinations of Improv Elements it may receive by generating different scenarios, experimenting with the materials, creating potential characters, and mixing and matching the various Improv Elements in practice sessions. It is expected that the team may choose to use and include some of the ideas that come from its practice sessions when combining the Improv Elements chosen randomly at the tournament into its unique Skit. As long as the team does not bring its ideas for scenarios, potential characters, etc. into the Presentation Site in written form, using the ideas is acceptable and is in keeping with the intent of the Challenge. If a team moves on to another level of tournament and by chance selects one or more of the same Improv Elements, it is encouraged to create another original solution, but no deduction will be taken if it reuses parts of an earlier solution. 2. Expense Report: No Expense Report form is required for this Challenge. 3. Clothing and Accessories: Items of clothing or accessories worn by the team must not be used as a part of the Skit. If clothing and/or accessories are incorporated into the Skit, they will be considered props and will result in a deduction. Team members may wear wristwatches for time management. The wristwatches can be worn during the Skit but must not be incorporated into the solution in any way. For example, a team member saying Dad will be here in 2 hours after looking at his or her watch is using the watch as a prop, and this is not allowed. No other timing devices will be allowed and the only official time is that kept by the Timekeeper/Announcer PROGRAM MATERIALS IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE D: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS < 71 >

The Prep Area Appraiser will check to see whether the team has the required forms (5 Tournament Data Forms, 1 Declaration of Independence) properly completed and that the research notes comply with the rules given in A.5.c. At this time, the team will select all Improv Elements that will be integrated into the Skit. a. Selecting Required Improv Element 1: Confined Space: The team will randomly select a tournament-supplied piece of paper with a number on it. The team will give the piece of paper, without looking at it, to the Prep Area Appraiser. The number on the piece of paper corresponds to one of the numbers of the team s researched Confined Spaces, as entered on the Tournament Data Form. The number selected determines the Confined Space for the Skit. b. Selecting Required Improv Element 2: Mysterious Stranger: The team will randomly select a tournament-supplied piece of paper and give it, without looking at it, to the Prep Area Appraiser. The piece of paper will indicate the Mysterious Stranger for the Skit. c. Selecting Required Improv Element 4: Newsflash: The team will randomly select a tournament-supplied piece of paper and give it, without looking at it, to the Prep Area Appraiser. The piece of paper will indicate the Newsflash for the Skit. 2. At the Presentation Site: a. The Presentation Site is the room where the team s Presentation takes place, and includes areas occupied by the Appraisers and the audience. The Presentation Area is a specially marked portion of the Presentation Site where the team will present. The recommended Presentation Site for this Challenge is an auditorium, music room, or cafeteria with good acoustics and stage space appropriate for a theatrical Presentation. b. The Presentation Area will be at least 8ft deep x 10ft wide (2.44m x 3.05m). The Confined Space will be a marked area that is exactly 6ft deep x 8ft wide (1.83m x 2.44m). All scored action must occur within the 6ft x 8ft space. The intent of this Challenge is for the team to be creative within a limited space. The team is allowed to enter and exit the 6ft x 8ft space as needed, but anything that occurs outside the space will NOT be scored. c. The team may NOT attach any items to any surface at the Presentation Site. d. While at the Presentation Site, the team shall not solicit any responses from the audience. The team must not involve the audience in the Presentation in any way. 3. Presentation Procedure: a. Introduction: The Timekeeper/Announcer will introduce the team to the audience. The Timekeeper/Announcer will announce Improv Elements 1 and 4 (Confined Space and Newsflash) for the Skit. The team will be provided with a written copy of the Newsflash. b. Preparation Time (3 Minutes): The team will be told to BEGIN its Preparation time. The team will have 3 minutes to prepare a Skit based on the 2 announced Improv Elements and to create its Miscellaneous Prop with the team-supplied newspaper. During the Preparation time, the team is free to consult its research notes (if any), and its unmarked copy of the Challenge. At the end of exactly 3 minutes, the Timekeeper/Announcer will say, STOP. The team must immediately stop preparing for the Skit and return all research notes and the Challenge to the designated area. At this point, the Timekeeper/Announcer will ask the team to show the Appraisers and the audience the Miscellaneous Prop that is to be scored and to identify 1 team member as the Mysterious Stranger. The team may keep and refer to the written copy of the Newsflash during its Skit PROGRAM MATERIALS IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE D: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS < 73 >

10 D. TOURNAMENT PROCEDURE CLOSE ENCOUNTERS i. The team member identified as the Mysterious Stranger may retrieve this paper at any time after the 4-minute Presentation time begins. c. Presentation Time (4 Minutes): The Timekeeper/Announcer will tell the team to BEGIN the Skit. During the Presentation time, the team may continue to modify its Miscellaneous Prop. At the end of 4 minutes, the Timekeeper/Announcer will say STOP, ending the Skit. The Skit ends, even if the team has not finished. If the team chooses, it may end its Skit at any time prior to the end of the 4-minute period. d. After the Skit, the team may bow and enjoy its well-earned applause.
