Overview VEX IQ Challenge Inspection Every robot will be required to pass an inspection before being cleared to participate in the VEX IQ Challenge. The deadline for teams to successfully complete the robot inspection process is Thursday, April 21, at 12:30 p.m. Inspectors will use the VEX IQ Inspection Checklist to ensure that all rules, which are included in the Official Bank Shot Game Manual, are met. Additional inspections may be required at the discretion of event personnel. Teams should use the Inspection Checklist as a guide to pre-inspect their robot to ensure that it meets all requirements. Robots that do not meet the established requirements will not pass inspection. Teams will be asked to make the necessary changes to comply with all Game Manual rules. After completing the required modifications, teams will then report to the Re-Inspection line. Inspectors at the reinspection tables will utilize the team s incomplete Inspection Checklist to re-evaluate the robot s compliance with all Game Manual rules A team s robot has passed inspection when: All checkboxes on the Inspection Checklist are completed, and both the inspector and a student team member have signed the Inspection Checklist. A colored dot has been attached to the robot by the inspector on or next to the license plate. The inspector should check the team off on the paper Team Checklist, to establish a backup paper trail. The signed Inspection Checklist form is then submitted to the Inspection Computer Manager for input into the Tournament Manager system. Monitors will display the status of the teams progress through the inspection process, as results are entered into the computer. One monitor will display the inspection status for teams in each of the two participating divisions. Once the passed inspection results are entered into the Tournament Manager system, the Inspection Checklists will be filed into 3- ring binders (one per division), in team number order. VEX IQ Challenge Inspection 4/7/2016
Staffing There are several key roles in the inspection process. Set Up Inspection Manager is responsible, with support from the VEX IQ Division Manager, for establishing and coordinating the VEX IQ robot inspection process. Inspectors are responsible for conducting inspections of robots to verify their conformance to the specifications and requirements outlined in the Official Bank Shot Game Manual. The Inspectors are responsible for ensuring the Inspection Checklist form is properly completed and signed by the Inspector and student team member, once the robot has passed inspection. The Inspectors are also responsible for promptly submitting the Inspection Checklists to the Passed or Re-Inspection Required folders at the Inspection Computer Manager station. Inspection Computer Manager will input the robot inspection status for each team into the Tournament Manager system. The Computer Manager will not input an inspection status as passed, unless the Inspection Checklist includes the signature of both the inspector and the student driver. After entering the inspection status into the Tournament Manager system, the Computer Manager will ensure that all Inspection Checklists are filed properly in the appropriate folder or binder, in team number order. Inspection Queuers will verify that the team is in the proper line, General Inspection or Re-Inspection, and direct the next team in line to the next available inspection station. The Inspection Queuer will ensure that no more than two student team members and one adult chaperone are in the inspection line, due to space constraints. The Inspection Queuer is also responsible for ensuring that teams line up safely and do not block traffic areas. There are sixteen (16) VEX IQ inspection tables, two (2) of which will initially be clearly designated, by signage, for Re-Inspection. One (1) table will be designated for the use of the Inspection Computer Manager and will include the computer laptop, with electrical and Ethernet connections, as well as the Passed Inspection inbox and binder and Re- Inspection Required folder. One (1) table will be designated to store the additional inspection materials and resources. Two chairs will be available for each table. These tables will be set up in a U-shape, with the opening facing to the back of the inspection area. The Inspection Computer Manager table will be set up in the middle of the U-shape to ensure easy access to and support of the Inspectors. Depending on traffic flow into the inspection area at any given time, re-inspection tables may also be used to accommodate general inspection. Additional re-inspection tables, and the appropriate signage, may be re- designated, as needed. VEX IQ Challenge Inspection 2 4/7/2016
Teams that present a Fast Pass or require re-inspection, due to not passing the initial inspection process or making major modifications to their robots since the initial inspection, will stand in the Re-Inspection line, designated by signage and stanchions set up on one end of the Inspection area. All other teams will stand in the General Inspection line, which will be designated by signage and stanchions set up on the opposite end of the Inspection area. Supplies General Supply List 16 tables, 6 ft. each and 2 chairs for each table 2 sets of stanchions, one for each end of the Inspection area 2 monitors to display inspection status 14 robot sizing tools (quantity can be reduced if shared by 2 inspectors, if needed) Measuring tape to measure robot height, if not accommodated by sizing tool 350 Bank Shot Inspection Checklists 2 Printed Registered Team Lists, sorted by division 2 packs of #32 Rubber bands 2 packs of #64 rubber bands 350 small blue colored stick-on dots 1 3-hole punch 6 Pens for each table 10 copies Team License Plate Templates, pre-cut 2 Computer laptops, loaded with Tournament Manager software, with electrical and Ethernet connections (one per division) 2 Power strips 2 Extension cords 2 colored folders for Passed and Re-Inspection Required Checklists 2 binders for Passed inspections, one for each division 1-2 packages of VEX IQ pins Documentation 2 each o Bank Shot Game Manual o VEX IQ Forum Clarifications o VEX IQ product catalog and/or poster with breakdown of parts from VEX IQ Super Kits o HEXBUG Index of Pieces ( VEX IQ Challenge Inspection 3 4/7/2016

The inspector will use the Inspection Checklist to guide his/her examination of the robot, as a checkmark is placed in each box of the criteria, which the robot meets. If the team does not pass the first inspection, they will be directed back to their pit space to make the required modifications of the robot. The team will be advised to report back to the Re-Inspection line once the modifications are complete. o The incomplete Inspection Checklist will be submitted to the Re- Inspection Required inbox of the Inspection Computer Manager for entry of the inspection status into the Tournament Manager system. o Once the Computer Manager has input the inspection status into Tournament Manager, the Computer Manager will file the Inspection Checklist in the Re- Inspection Required folder, in team number order. o The team will return to the Re-Inspection line after making the required modifications and wait for directions from the Inspection Queuer. o The inspector at the Re-Inspection station will verify the team number and retrieve the appropriate incomplete Inspection Checklist for the team from the Re-Inspection folder on the Computer Manager table to continue the team s inspection process. When a robot has passed inspection, the Inspector and the student team member will sign the bottom of the Inspection Checklist form. VEX IQ Challenge Inspection 4 4/7/2016
o The inspector will attach a colored stick-on dot to the robot next to or on the license plate to demonstrate that the robot has met the criteria designated on the Inspection Checklist. The team will be directed to return to the pit area. o The inspector will check the team off on the printed Team List as having completed the inspection process, as a backup paper trail to the Tournament Manager system. o The Inspector will submit the completed and signed Inspection Checklist form to the Passed inbox of the Inspection Computer Manager. o The Inspection Computer Manager will verify that the Inspection Checklist is complete and includes the signature of both the inspector and the student team member. o Once the Computer Manager inputs the inspection status into Tournament Manager, he/she will place the form in the Passed folder for filing. o The Computer Manager will confirm the appropriate division for the team and file the Inspection Checklist in the Passed binder for either the Elementary or Middle School division, in team number order. Official VEX IQ Inspection Rules Please refer to the Robot Inspection section of the Bank Shot Game Manual for complete VEX IQ inspection rules. The Bank Shot Game Manual is available on the VEX IQ Current Challenge site: <R1> The team s Robot must pass inspection before being allowed to participate in any Matches. Noncompliance with any Robot design or construction rule may result in disqualification of the Robot at an event. If significant changes are made to a robot, it must be re-inspected before it will be allowed to participate in a Match. Teams may be requested to submit to random spot-inspections by event personnel. Refusal to submit will result in disqualification. Referees or inspectors may decide that a robot is in violation of the rules. In this event, the team in violation will be disqualified and the robot will be barred from the playing field until it passes re-inspection. <R2> Only one (1) robot will be allowed to participate per team in the VEX IQ Challenge. Though it is expected that teams will make changes to their robot at the event, a team is limited to only one (1) robot. The VEX IQ System is intended to be a mobile robotics design platform. As such, a VEX IQ Challenge robot, for the purposes of the VEX IQ Challenge, has the following subsystems. Subsystem 1: Mobile robotic base including wheels, tracks, or any other mechanism that allows the robot to navigate the majority of the flat playing field surface. Subsystem 2: Power and control system that includes a VEX IQ legal battery, a VEX IQ control system, and associated Smart Motors for the mobile robotic base. Subsystem 3: Additional mechanisms (and associated Smart Motors) that allow manipulation of game objects or navigation of field obstacles. VEX IQ Challenge Inspection 5 4/7/2016
Given the above definitions, a minimum robot for use in any VEX IQ Challenge event (including Skills Challenges) must consist of subsystem 1 and 2 above. Thus if you are swapping out an entire subsystem of either item 1 or 2, you have now created a second robot and are no longer legal. a. Teams may not participate with one robot, while a second is being modified or assembled. b. Teams may not switch back and forth between multiple robots during an event. <R3> Every robot should have their VEX IQ Challenge License Plates displayed on two opposing sides, with their VEX IQ Challenge Team Number clearly written on. a. The VEX IQ Challenge License Plates are considered a non-functional decoration, and cannot be used as a functional part of the robot. b. These number plates must fulfill all robot rules. <R4> At the start of each Match, the Robot must satisfy the following constraints. a. Only contact the Floor within a 13 x 13 area b. Fit within a 13 x 20 area, bounded by the Starting Position c. Be no taller than 15 A Robot may not expand beyond its 13 x 20 starting area constraint at any time during the match. However, Robots are permitted to expand beyond their 15 starting height constraint at any time during the match. <R5> The starting configuration of the Robot at the beginning of a match must be the same as a Robot configuration inspected for compliance, and within the maximum allowed size. a. Teams using more than one Robot configuration at the beginning of matches must tell the inspector(s) and have the Robot inspected in its largest configuration(s). b. A team may NOT have its Robot inspected in one configuration and then place it at the start of a match in an uninspected configuration. <R6> Robots may be built ONLY from Official Robot Components from the VEX IQ product line, unless otherwise specifically noted within these rules. a. During inspections if there is a question about whether something is an official VEX IQ component, a team will be required to provide documentation to an inspector that proves the component s source. Such types of documentation may include, but are not limited to, receipts, part numbers, or other printed materials. b. Only the VEX IQ components specifically designed for use in Robot construction are allowed. Using additional components outside their typical purpose is against the intent of the rule (i.e. please don t try using VEX IQ apparel, team or event support materials, packaging or other non-robot products on a VEX IQ Challenge Robot). c. Products from the VEX EDR or VEXpro product line cannot be used for robot construction. Products from the VEX product line that are also cross listed as part of the VEX IQ product line are legal. VEX IQ Challenge Inspection 6 4/7/2016
d. Mechanical/structural components from the VEX Robotics by HEXBUG product line are legal for robot construction. However, electrical components from the VEX Robotics by HEXBUG product line are illegal for robot construction. e. Official Robotics Components from the VEX IQ product line that have been discontinued are still legal for robot use. However teams must be aware of <R6a>. f. 3D printed versions of VEX IQ components are not legal for use. <R7> Official VEX IQ products are ONLY available from VEX & Official VEX Resellers. To determine whether a product is official or not, consult <R8> Robots are allowed to use the following additional non-vex IQ components: a. Teams may add appropriate non-functional decorations provided that these do not affect the robot performance in any significant way or affect the outcome of the match. These decorations must be in the spirit of the event. Inspectors will have the final say in what is considered nonfunctional. i. Any decorations must be backed by legal materials that provide the same functionality, i.e. if your robot has a giant decal that prevents Game Objects from falling out of the robot, the decal must be backed by VEX IQ material that also prevents the Game Objects from falling out. ii. The use of non-toxic paint is allowed as a non-functional decoration. However, teams should be careful, as the use of paint may affect how VEX IQ parts snap together. Also, any paint being used as an adhesive would be classified as functional. b. Rubber bands that are identical in length and thickness to those included in the VEX IQ product line. <R9> Additional VEX IQ products that are released during the challenge season are considered legal for use. a. Some new components may have certain restrictions placed on them upon their release. These restrictions will be documented in a Team Update. Team Updates will be posted to the VEX IQ Forum in the VIQC Bank Shot ( Game) section on <R10> Robots must use ONLY one (1) VEX IQ Robot Brain. a. Robot brains, microcontrollers, or other electronic components that are part of the VEX EDR or VEXpro product line are not allowed. <R11> Robots may use up to six (6) VEX IQ Smart Motors. <R12> The only allowable sources of electrical power for a VEX IQ Challenge Robot is any single (1) VEX IQ Battery Pack. a. Additional batteries cannot be used on the robot (even ones that aren t connected). <R13> Parts may NOT be modified. a. Examples of modifications include, but are not limited to, bending and cutting. b. <R8ii> is an exception to this rule. VEX IQ Challenge Inspection 7 4/7/2016
<R14> The following types of mechanisms and components are NOT allowed: a. Those that could potentially damage playing field components. b. Those that could potentially damage other robots. c. Those that pose an unnecessary risk of entanglement. <R15> A Robot is deemed successfully inspected when it has been recorded as passed by an Inspector and the inspection form has been signed by the Inspector and a student team member. Inspection Instructions for Teams (Sent in advance) Following are the steps that your team can follow to help ensure that the robot inspection process is easy for both your team and the event volunteers: 1. Inspect your robot at least one week before you leave for VEX Worlds. Use the official Inspection Checklist, available under the Resources section of the VEX IQ Teams Page: 2. Make sure that your robot meets all of the criteria on this Inspection Checklist before you arrive at VEX Worlds. 3. Your robot s starting configuration must only contact the Floor within a 13 x 13 area, fit within a 13 x 20 area, bounded by the Starting Position, and be no taller than 15. A Robot may not expand beyond its 13 x 20 starting area constraint at any time during the match. However, Robots are permitted to expand beyond their 15 starting height constraint at any time during the match. 4. Attach a license plate, labeled with your team number, to two opposing sides of the robot by using a VEX IQ pin. 5. Bring your robot, with the battery attached, and your controller to the Inspection station, as soon as possible upon arrival at the event. The deadline to complete the robot inspection process is Thursday, April 21 at 12:30 p.m. 6. Remember that each team is permitted to use only one robot, which has passed inspection, for all robot game Challenges. The same robot will be used in the Teamwork Challenge and Skills Challenge matches. 7. Know your team number, so that you can share this with the Inspector. 8. Up to two (2) student team members and one (1) adult chaperone only should report to the General Inspection station, due to space limitations. 9. If your robot uses more than one starting configuration, share this information with the Inspector, so that the robot can be inspected in its largest starting configuration. 10. Follow the directions of all Inspection volunteers and demonstrate courtesy and respect at all times. Once your robot has passed inspection, you are ready to play!
