2 VEX Robotics Sack Attack A Introduction A P P E N D I X Game Field This document will provide detailed specifications, BOM information, and assembly instructions for the Official Field. Teams who do not need an official field should refer to the separate low-cost field guide for costreduction options. Please note: this field utilizes the VEX Field Perimeter ( ) developed by VEX Robotics. Instructions and specifications for this field perimeter are available in a separate document, and are also important for the field assembly. This document is divided up into four sections: 1. Field Overview 2. Field Bill of Materials 3. Field Specifications 4. Field Assembly Instructions There is also an accompanying STEP file which can be imported into most 3D modeling programs (i.e. Autodesk Inventor). This 3D model not only shows the official setup of a VEX Sack Attack field, but it also includes detailed models of all the individual field elements (except the Sacks, those are greatly simplified so our computers don t crash while trying to manipulate the assembly file). For additional game-play detail, please refer to the VEX Sack Attack competition manual. 3 VEX Robotics Sack Attack Field Overview The game VEX Sack Attack is played on a 12 ft x 12 ft foam-mat, surrounded by a sheet-metal and lexan perimeter. The field is divided in half by a center structure consisting of four alternating colored troughs (two red, and two blue) with a high-goal rising above the troughs from the center. Spread around the field, and in the alliance starting positions are Sacks for robots to manipulate and carry. 6 VEX Robotics Sack Attack Field Specifications Introduction This section will outline the specifications which are most important to teams designing a robot to compete in the VEX Robotics Sack Attack. Though many of the critical dimensions are included in this section, it may be necessary to consult the separate assembly guide and 3D-CAD models of the field for an additional level of detail (if you can t find a dimension in the specifications, we include a FULL model of the field virtually measure whatever you need). Field components may vary slightly from event to event. This is to be expected; teams will need to adapt accordingly. The Green Scoring Sacks and Gold Bonus Sacks are made with duck canvas and a weighted filler made from plastic and foam pellets. Each Sack weighs.5+/-.05 pounds and makes a 5.5+/-.5" square when laid flat.

Each Sack weighs.5+/-.05 pounds and makes a 5.5+/-.5" square when laid flat. The Sacks are not completely filled with weighted filler, as a result they do not hold their dimensions when handled. Scoring Sacks & Bonus Sacks come with a white information tag attached to one seam. These tags should be removed before use. Every School will receive a sample set of game objects in their team welcome kit when they register as a VEX Robotics team. These are identical to the official Sacks available as part of this season's field. Additional Game Objects are available for purchase from on the VEX Sack Attack page. Note: As listed above, Game Objects may vary in size; teams need to accommodate this in their design. 15 VEX Robotics Sack Attack Field Assembly Introduction This section will detail the steps required to construct the competition field for the VEX Robotics Sack Attack. The VRC Sack Attack field utilizes the VEX Field Perimeter ( ). For specifications and instructions for assembling this frame, please refer to the separate VEX Field Perimeter manual. Also refer to the separate low-cost field document, which provides lower cost options to teams not needing a full official competition field. Instructions for assembly are included with the VEX Field Perimeter instructions. 3. Assemble the Foam Floor inside the perimeter. Refer to Sheets 2-5 of this document for instructions. Before assembling the foam tile floor some tiles will need to be modified. There are 3 main types of tiles.

(16x) Edge Tiles (2x) Red Edge Tiles (2x) Blue Edge Tiles Edge tiles have their interlocking tabs cut away on ONE edge.

(16x) Normal Tiles Normal tiles, are unmodified. These will be used on the "inside" of the field. There should be (16) of these per field.

17 Before assembling the foam tile floor some tiles will need to be modified. There are 3 main types of tiles. (4x) Corner Tiles Corner tiles have their interlocking tabs cut away on TWO adjacent edges. These will be used in the (4) corners of the field. (16x) Edge Tiles (2x) Red Edge Tiles (2x) Blue Edge Tiles Edge tiles have their interlocking tabs cut away on ONE edge. These will be used along the edges of the field. There are (16) per field. Note, the (2) Red Tiles and the (2) Blue Tiles are edge tiles. (16x) Normal Tiles Normal tiles, are unmodified. These will be used on the "inside" of the field. There should be (16) of these per field. Important: Before modifying ANY tiles, check to ensure your set of tiles NEEDS modification. Tabs should be easily removed with a sharp knife or razor blade. The "smooth" side of the tiles should be up, and the textured side down. the tiles should be assembled "in-place", within the field perimeter. The "Blue" and "Red" Edge tiles should be placed as shown above. The grid-lines shown are for reference only. Note: the tile grid can be labeled on a coordinate system horizontally with letters A through F and vertically with numbers 1 through 6. If you label the back of your tiles in this manner it will make it easier to disassemble and reassemble your field later. (i.e. Tile A1, A2... Two Small Base Plates should be placed at the seams highlighted in Image A. To install the Small Base Plates, lay down one of the tiles that make up the highlighted seam and place a Small Base Plate halfway underneath it as shown in Image B. It is crucial that the studs that protrude from the plate are positioned between the interlocking tabs exactly as shown in Image B. After the Small Base Plate has been positioned, lay down the adjacent tile. The studs should be visible between the two tiles as shown in Image C. Before starting the installation of the Large Base Plate, note its orientation in relation to the field. The longer side of the Large Base Plate should run "left to right" if the field is oriented as shown in Image A. To install the Large Base Plate, lay down one of the tiles that make up the highlighted junction and place the Large Base Plate underneath it as shown in Image B. It is crucial that the studs that protrude from the plate are positioned between the interlocking tabs as shown in Image B. After the Large Base Plate has been positioned, lay down the adjacent tiles. The studs should be visible between the four tiles as shown in Image C. (The Large Base Plate is between the two Small Base Plates, centered in the field) Leave these screws loose until the full Trough is assembled, then ensure the stanchions are vertical and tighten the screws. Stud from Large Base Plate (4x) Using (2x) #8-32 x 5/8" screws mount a Stanchion Assembly to each of the Small Base Plates that were installed under the foam tiles. (The Small Base Plates are the two "outside" plates) #8-32 x 5/8" Screws (2x) Leave these screws loose until the full Trough is assembled, then ensure the stanchions are vertical and tighten the screws. Using (32x) #8-32 x 5/8" screws, install all (4x) Middle Goals as shown in Images A & B. The Stanchions have factory installed #8-32 nuts in them, no additional nuts are required. It is critical that the Troughs are installed in the correct positions in relation to the colored Foam Tiles, as illustrated in Image C. These lines are used for robot line following. The tape should be layed out on the field as shown above. The lines are made from 3/4" wide white electrical tape. Apply the tape lines as shown. They should lay on top of the foam tile's seams, and stretch all the way across the field as shown above. IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT stretch tape when applying to tiles.
