I THE CENTRAL CHALLENGE A. SKIT 1. Use up to 2 minutes of Preparation time to create an improvisational Skit about a quest to find and return a lost Cultural Treasure. The Skit must incorporate 2 Explorers that interact with each other, an Unusual Place where the characters find the Cultural Treasure, and a Prop-In-Motion that helps the characters on their quest. Use up to 5 minutes to present the Skit to the audience and the Appraisers, incorporating a Setback. 2. For this Challenge, a quest is a journey dedicated to finding and returning the Cultural Treasure to its owner(s). It is up to your team to decide who or what the owner(s) of the Cultural Treasure will be. 3. Your team should use good judgment and remember the Skit should be appropriate for all audiences and cultures. (See Rules of the Road, Conduct and Concerns at Tournaments section.) B. REQUIRED IMPROV ELEMENT 1: CULTURAL TREASURE 1. Before the tournament, Elementary Level teams will choose 6 cultures to research, Middle Level teams will choose 8 cultures to research, and Secondary/University Level teams will choose 12 cultures to research. 2. For this Challenge, a culture is a group of people in a particular place and time who share beliefs, language, values, behavior or other social practices. 3. The chosen cultures must be real and either exist or have existed on Earth. Questions about the validity of your team s chosen cultures will not be answered in the Clarification process. 4. For each culture your team selects, choose a Cultural Treasure to research. 5. For this Challenge, a Cultural Treasure is something with cultural significance created or modified by people and that is portrayed during the Presentation. 6. The Cultural Treasures may be ideas, people, music, dance, monuments, artifacts or other types of cultural creations. 7. The Cultural Treasures your team researches should each have significant meaning and value to the culture it comes from. 8. The Cultural Treasures do not need to have monetary value. 9. Each Cultural Treasure must be real and either exist or have existed in the chosen culture. 10. In the Prep Area, randomly select 1 of the culture/cultural Treasure pairs on your Tournament Data Form. Your team will not know which culture/cultural Treasure pair you have chosen until immediately before the 2-minute Preparation time. At that time, the Timekeeper/Announcer will announce which culture and Cultural Treasure your team has selected DESTINATION IMAGINATION, INC. 3
C. REQUIRED IMPROV ELEMENT 2: EXPLORERS 1. Before the tournament, your team will research the Explorers listed in the table below. Elementary Level teams will choose 6 Explorers to research, Middle Level teams will choose 8 Explorers to research, and Secondary/University Level teams will choose 12 Explorers to research. Elementary Level teams must select at least 1 Explorer from 4 different columns, Middle Level teams must select at least 1 Explorer from each different column, and Secondary/University Level teams must select 2 Explorers from each different column. 2. In the Prep Area, randomly select 2 of the Explorers listed on your Tournament Data Form. Your team will not know which Explorers you have chosen until immediately before the 2-minute Preparation time. At that time, the Timekeeper/Announcer will announce which Explorers your team has chosen. 3. During the Skit, the Explorers will interact with each other. It is up to your team to determine how much the Explorers will interact. Pirate / Treasure Explorers Navigational Explorers Anthropological Explorers Natural Explorers Space / Aviation Explorers Fictional Explorers Sir Francis Drake Gertrude Bell Ruth Benedict Jacques Cousteau Elon Musk Alice (from Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass ) Blackbeard (Edward Teach) Sebastian de Ocampo Hiram Bingham Sylvia Earle Yuri Gagarin Time Traveler (from H.G. 5 D. REQUIRED IMPROV ELEMENT 3: UNUSUAL PLACE 1. In the Prep Area, randomly select a tournament-supplied piece of paper that lists an Unusual Place where the Cultural Treasure is found. Your team will not know which Unusual Place you have chosen until immediately before the 2-minute Preparation time. At that time, the Timekeeper/Announcer will announce the Unusual Place. 2. For this Challenge, an Unusual Place is somewhere strange where one would not expect to find a treasure. Examples of an Unusual Place include the belly of a fish or a tire factory. E. REQUIRED IMPROV ELEMENT 4: PROP-IN-MOTION 1. Bring 1 plain, white, commercially-available, flat bed sheet of any size to use in your Skit as the Prop-In-Motion. Your team may not permanently modify the sheet in any way. Your team should refer to Section I.G.1, Team-Provided Items, for more information on the requirements for the bed sheet. 2. For this Challenge, a Prop-In-Motion is a sheet that portrays an object, setting, idea, emotion or anything else through changes in the size, shape, location or other team-controlled movement. 3. Your team may only use 1 sheet in your Skit, but you can choose to use it in many different ways throughout the Skit. It is up to your team to decide how and how often to use the Prop-In-Motion to enhance the Skit. F. REQUIRED IMPROV ELEMENT 5: SETBACK 1. In the Prep Area, randomly select a tournament-supplied piece of paper that lists a Setback. 2. For this Challenge, a Setback is an event that occurs and presents an obstacle during the quest. Examples of a Setback are The sky is falling or A swarm of bees surrounds you. 3. The team-selected Setback will be placed in a designated space in the Presentation Area. Any time after the Skit time begins, a team member will pick up the piece of paper and read it silently or out loud. By picking up the piece of paper, your team has triggered the Setback and must begin including it in your Skit. 4. Your team may re-read the piece of paper at any time to make sure you understand the Setback, but you may not include the paper itself in your Skit DESTINATION IMAGINATION, INC. 5
G. TEAM-PROVIDED ITEMS 1. Bed Sheet: Bring 1 plain, white, commercially-available, flat bed sheet of any size to the Presentation Site. The sheet may not be modified in any permanent way either before the tournament, during the Preparation time or during the Skit. The sheet does not need to be in the original packaging and may be washed or ironed flat prior to the Presentation as long as the sheet is not affected in any way that would contribute to your team s Presentation. The sheet will be unfolded in the Prep Area and checked to make sure that it meets the requirements. If your team does not bring a sheet to the Presentation Site, or the sheet your team brings does not meet the requirements, your team will not be able to earn points for the Prop-In-Motion. Your team may use the sheet at any time during the Preparation time and Skit. Immediately following the end of the Skit, the sheet must be able to be returned to its original, pre-presentation condition. 2. Research Notes: Research notes created by your team prior to the tournament may be used as reference materials during the Preparation time, but may NOT be used during the Skit. Research notes may be handwritten, typed by your team, photocopied or electronically duplicated. The following are not considered research notes: books, pre-written scripts, pre-written jokes, pre-cut templates or models, drawings, and team-generated lists of ideas for scenarios, characters, etc. 3. Your team may also bring pencils and paper for planning, but the pencils and paper may NOT be used during the Skit. The pencils may NOT be used to mark on the bed sheet. 4. Your team cannot bring physical props, scenery or costumes, including anything worn to the Presentation Site to enhance the Skit. A costume is anything that has been worn or altered with a specific solution in mind prior to the tournament. Graphics on shirts or other clothing are acceptable, as long as they do not contribute in any way to the Challenge solution. 5. A clean copy of this Challenge may be brought to the Presentation Site. It must be without team notes. H. HONORING THE INTENT OF THIS CHALLENGE 1. The intent of this Challenge is to create a unique improvisational Skit based on the specific combination of Elements selected at the tournament. 2. Prior to the tournament, your team is encouraged to prepare for the many possible combinations of Improv Elements it may receive by generating different scenarios, experimenting with the Prop-In- Motion and creating potential characters. It is expected that your team will choose to use and include some of the ideas that come from practice sessions when combining the Improv Elements chosen randomly at the tournament into the Skit IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE
3. As long as your team does not bring ideas for scenarios, potential characters, etc. into the Presentation Site in written form, using the ideas is acceptable and within the intent of the Challenge. 4. If your team moves on to another level of tournament and selects one or more of the same Improv Elements, you are encouraged to create a new solution, but no deduction will be taken if you reuse parts of an earlier solution. I. CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES 1. Items of clothing or accessories worn by your team must not be used as a part of the Skit. If clothing and/or accessories are incorporated into the Skit, they will be considered props and will result in a deduction. 2. Team members may wear wristwatches for time management. The wristwatches can be worn during the Skit but must not be incorporated into the solution in any way. For example, a team member saying Dad will be here in 2 hours after looking at his or her watch is using the watch as a prop, and this is not allowed. No other timing devices will be allowed. The official time is kept by the Timekeeper/Announcer DESTINATION IMAGINATION, INC. 7
II AT THE TOURNAMENT A. Presentation Area: The minimum required size is 8ft x 10ft (2.44m x 3.05m). Your team may use any additional space that tournament officials designate as available, but your team should be prepared to present its solution in the minimum space. A part of the Presentation Site will be marked off to designate the Launch Area. Once the Skit begins, the Launch Area may be used as part of the Presentation Area. The Presentation Area will be a large space with a hard floor, such as wood, linoleum, concrete or very 10ft (3.05m) PRESENTATION AREA 8ft (2.44m) short-napped carpet. Your team should be prepared to deal with a variety of floor surfaces. Your team may not attach anything to walls at the Presentation Site. Your team may not use or reference any items that happen to be at the Presentation Site. B. Forms: Your team will need to bring your completed Declaration of Independence and Tournament Data Forms to the tournament. (See Rules of the Road for the Declaration of Independence. Tournament Data Forms can be found at the end of this Challenge.) No Expense Report form is required for this Challenge. C. Identification Sign: Provide a freestanding sign displaying your team name, Team Number, school/ organization and level. The purpose of the sign is to identify your team to the Appraisers. (See Rules of the Road, Team Identification Sign.) D. Instant Challenge: At a tournament, your team will solve one Instant Challenge in addition to showcasing your Team Challenge solution. Instant Challenges are kept secret until the day of the tournament. (See Rules of the Road.) Because Instant Challenge is worth 25% of a team s overall score at a tournament, teams often practice different types of Instant Challenges throughout the season. (See Roadmap.)
