10 CENTRAL CHALLENGE A. CENTRAL CHALLENGE 300 POINTS 1. The Intent of the Challenge Stories can be both fun and complex. The team will be given a Story Prompt, a Stock Character and a performance Genre on which to base a story. To solve this Challenge, the team will prepare and present a Skit that tells a story. To triple the fun, the team will prepare and present two more Skits using the same Story Prompt, but each time with a new Stock Character and Genre. The team will be able enhance all of the Skits by using props and other items that it has brought in a Box-O-Stuff. 2. Skits a. The team will plan and present 3 Skits. Each Skit will: i. Be prepared and presented within 3 minutes. ii. Be based upon the same Story Prompt. iii. Include a different Stock Character that plays a central role. iv. Be presented in the style of a different Genre. v. Include props and other items from the team s Box-O-Stuff. b. Each Skit may begin at any time the team chooses during the 3-minute Preparation/Skit time. The team must signal the Appraisers when each Skit begins. c. The team will earn points for the overall presentation of each Skit. (C.1.a, C.2.a, C.3.a) 3. The following Improv Elements must be included in each of the team s Skits: a. Required Improv Element 1: Story Prompt i. The Story Prompt will be randomly selected and revealed to the team at the tournament. It will include 2 events that must be the focus of all 3 Skits. One of the 2 events will involve the Stock Character. (A.3.b) Examples of Story Prompts are The Stock Character has lost a shoe, and the theater is flooded, and The Stock Character discovers a buried vehicle, and the furniture is talking. ii. The team will earn points for the creative development of the Story Prompt in each Skit. (C.1.b, C.2.b, C.3.b) b. Required Improv Element 2: Stock Character i. Before the tournament, the team will research the Stock Characters listed in Table 1. A different list of Stock Characters will be used in Regional Tournaments, Affiliate Tournaments and Global Finals. ii. At the tournament, the team will randomly select 3 Stock Characters from the appropriate column in Table 1. The team will not know which Stock Characters it has chosen until it begins each Preparation/Skit time. Immediately before the start of each 3-minute Preparation/Skit time, one of the 3 Stock Characters will be revealed to the team. The team will then incorporate that Stock Character into the Skit. iii. In each Skit, the team will earn points for the creative and effective portrayal of each Stock Character and for its integration as a central character in the Skit. Only the selected Stock Character will be scored in each Skit. (C.1.c, C.2.c, C.3.c) IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE

14 SPECIAL RULES B. SPECIAL RULES FOR IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGES 1. The Intent of the Challenge The intent of this Challenge is to create 3 unique improvisational Skits based on the specific combination of Improv Elements selected at the tournament. Prior to the tournament, the team is encouraged to prepare for the many possible combinations of Improv Elements it may receive by generating different scenarios, experimenting with the materials, creating potential characters, and mixing and matching the various Improv Elements in practice sessions. It is expected that the team will choose to use and include some of the ideas that come from practice sessions when combining the Improv Elements chosen randomly at the tournament into the unique Skits. As long as the team does not bring its ideas for scenarios, potential characters other than Stock Characters, etc. into the Presentation Site in written form, using the ideas is acceptable and is within the intent of the Challenge. If a team moves on to another level of tournament and by chance selects one or more of the same Improv Elements, it is encouraged to create another original solution, but no deduction will be taken if it reuses parts of an earlier solution. 2. Expense Report All items in the Box-O-Stuff must be listed on the Expense Report. The budget for this Challenge is $50. Details on how to fill out an Expense Report Form may be found in the Rules of the Road. 3. Clothing and Accessories a. Items of clothing worn by team members as they enter the Presentation Area may not be used to contribute in any way to the presentation of the Skits. If a team member uses one of these items of clothing to contribute in any way to the Skits, the team could receive an Illegal Procedure deduction. Graphics on shirts or other articles of clothing that are worn into the Presentation Area are acceptable, as long as they are not referred to and do not contribute in any way to the Challenge solution. b. Jewelry, hair accessories and glasses may not be incorporated into the Skits unless they came from the Box-O-Stuff. c. Team members may wear wristwatches only for time management. The wristwatch can be worn during the Skit, but it may not contribute in any way to the solution. The team may bring in other timing devices in addition to wristwatches for the sole purpose of time management. Any timing devices used by the team must be silent. These devices must not be stored in the Box-O-Stuff and must not be incorporated in the Skits. For example, a team member saying Dad will be here in 2 hours after looking at a wristwatch or timing device is using it as a prop, and this is not allowed. If a team member uses a timing device to contribute to the Skits, the team will receive an Illegal Procedure deduction. These timing devices do not need to be included on the Expense Report. The Timekeeper/Announcer keeps the only official time, and this official time is final. d. Any item that is placed into or removed from a team member s pocket in the Presentation Area may not contribute in any way to the Skits IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE

Paperwork: The Prep Area Appraiser will check to see whether the team has the required forms properly completed and that the research notes, if any, comply with the rules given in A.5.c. b. Box-O-Stuff: The Prep Area Appraiser will check the dimensions of the Box-O-Stuff and check to see if the contents all fit within the box and are all allowed items. (A.3.d.ii) The team will be asked to remove any item from the Box-O-Stuff that the Appraisers believe is a safety risk or is difficult to clean up. The Prep Area Appraiser s decision on this issue is final. Questions about the potential safety or messiness of specific items will not be answered in the Clarification process. If a team is unsure if an item will be allowed, it is encouraged to bring a substitute item in case the first one is not allowed. The Prep Area Appraiser will also check that the contents of the Box-O-Stuff are accurately represented on the Expense Report. The team will pack the items, including research notes and Challenge copy, if any, back into the Box-O-Stuff. c. Selecting Required Improv Element 1 - Story Prompt: The team will draw 1 tournament-supplied piece of paper and hand it, without looking at it, to the Prep Area Appraiser. This piece of paper will indicate the Story Prompt for all 3 Skits. d. Selecting Required Improv Element 2 - Stock Character: The team will draw 3 tournament-supplied pieces of paper, one at a time, and hand them, without looking at them, to the Prep Area Appraiser. Each piece of paper will indicate the name of a Stock Character from the list in Table 1, as noted for that specific tournament. e. Selecting Required Improv Element 3 - Genre: The team will draw 3 tournament-supplied pieces of paper, one at a time, and hand them, without looking at them, to the Prep Area Appraiser. Each piece of paper will indicate a number corresponding to one of the team-chosen Genres noted on the Tournament Data Form. f. Immediately before the beginning of the first 3-minute Preparation/Skit time, 1 selection for each of the above 3 Improv Elements will be revealed to the team to incorporate into the first Skit. Immediately before the second and third Preparation/Skit times, a new Stock Character and a new Genre will be revealed to the team. The selections will be used in the order they were drawn. 2. Presentation Site a. The Presentation Site is the room where the team s Presentation takes place, and includes areas occupied by the Appraisers and the audience. The Presentation Area is a specially designated portion of the Presentation Site where the team will present. The minimum required overall size of the Presentation Area is 8ft deep x 10ft wide (2.44m x 3.05m), but the team may use any additional space that tournament officials designate as available. b. While at the Presentation Site, the team must not solicit any responses from the audience IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE

17 3. Presentation Procedure a. Introduction: The team will enter the Presentation Area with its Box-O-Stuff and timekeeping devices (if any). The Timekeeper/Announcer will introduce the team to the audience. At this time, the team may remove paper and writing instruments from the Box-O-Stuff if they chose to bring them. All other items in the Box-O-Stuff must remain in the box until the first Preparation/Skit time begins. The Timekeeper/Announcer will ask the team to demonstrate to the Appraisers the signal it plans to use to mark the end of its Preparation time and the beginning of its Skit. The Timekeeper/Announcer will introduce the 3 Improv Elements selected at random for the first Skit. The team will be provided with a written copy of the Story Prompt. The team may write down on its paper the Stock Character and the Genre as they are announced. AT THE TOURNAMENT b. First Preparation/Skit Time: Immediately after the Improv Elements have been revealed, the Timekeeper/ Announcer will say, BEGIN. The team will have the next 3 minutes to both prepare and present its first Skit. The team may decide how much of the 3 minutes to devote to each task. Since the team is allowed to bring its own timing device, team members may not ask the Appraisers how much time is left. The team will only be told when to begin and when its 3 minutes are over. The team may begin using the items from the Box-O-Stuff at any time after the Preparation/Skit time begins. When the team is ready to begin the Skit, it will signal the Appraisers. If a team does not signal the Appraisers in the way it demonstrated previously, the Appraisers will use their best judgment to determine when the team has ended its Preparation time and has begun its Skit time. The Appraisers decision is final. At the end of 3 minutes, the Timekeeper/Announcer will say STOP and the Skit will end, even if the team is not finished. If the team chooses, it may end the Skit at any time before the end of the 3-minute Preparation/Skit time. If there is any leftover time from a previous Preparation/Skit time, it will not carry over to the next Preparation/Skit time. c. First Interlude: At the end of the first Skit, the team will stay in place as the Timekeeper/Announcer announces a new Stock Character and a new Genre for the second Skit. One team member may retrieve a writing instrument and paper to record the new Improv Elements during this time. The team does not need to repack the Box-O-Stuff during the Interlude. d. Second Preparation/Skit time: This procedure will follow D.3.b. e. Second Interlude: This procedure will follow D.3.c. f. Third Preparation/Skit time: This procedure will follow D.3.b. g. After the final Skit, the team may bow and enjoy its well-earned applause. The team should remain in the Presentation Area to talk briefly with the Appraisers DESTINATION IMAGINATION, INC. 13
