1 Integrated security for an IP-connected world Tech Note 13 June 2, 2011 Using the First-in Unlock System Rule There may be times when a customer needs to have one or more portals unlock at the same time each day and remain unlocked for a specific period, but only when certain cardholders are present. In addition, those cardholders must be able to lock and re-lock the portals at any time during the daily unlock period. For example, a company may want the main entrance to its office building to unlock at the start each business day and remain unlocked during normal office hours, as long as a receptionist is on duty. Each receptionist must have the ability to lock and unlock the entrance door during the day in case of an emergency. To meet the customer s needs, you can use a First-in Unlock rule in conjunction with reader groups, unlock time specs, special access levels, and portal groups. An example detailing the required procedures is presented below. Example Suppose that a retail store owner wants the store s entrance doors to unlock at 9 a.m. and to remain unlocked until 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, as long as the store manager is present. Once the procedures that follow are completed, the store manager will be able to present her card to a designated reader: When she arrives (usually at around 7:30 a.m.) to have the appropriate door unlock momentarily so she can enter and then have all entrance doors unlock automatically at 9 a.m. and remain unlocked until 6 p.m. - or - After 9 a.m. to have all entrance doors unlock immediately and remain unlocked until 6 p.m. Anytime between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to toggle all entrance doors between their locked and unlocked states. Note: This example assumes that readers, inputs, outputs, and portals have already been set up, and that readers named Reader 1 and Reader 2 are assigned to portals named Entrance 1 and Entrance 2, respectively. 2 Required Procedures Create a reader group: This group will contain the readers designated for valid reads of the unlock and relock access levels. 1. Select Setup : Access Control : Reader Groups. 2. Create a reader group named Entrance Readers for Reader 1 and Reader 2. Create an unlock time spec: This time spec will define normal store hours. 1. Select Setup : Time : Time Specs. 2. Create a time spec named Store Hours for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (09:00 18:00), Monday through Saturday. Create unlock and relock access levels: These access levels will be assigned to the First-in Unlock rule and to the store manager s person record. 1. Select Setup : Access Control : Access Levels. 2. Create an access level called Entrance Unlock and assign the Entrance Readers reader group. 3. Create an access level called Entrance Relock and assign the Entrance Readers reader group. Both access levels can use the time spec Always. Create a First-in Unlock rule: This rule will be used to modify the regular locking and unlocking behavior of the portal group you will create for the store s entrance doors. 1. Select Setup : Site Settings : System Rules. 2. Create a system rule called Unlock Entrance. S2 Security Corporation 2 of 5 June 2011

3 3. Assign Entrance Unlock and Entrance Relock as the rule s unlock and relock access levels, respectively. 4. Specify a daily reset time of 7:00 for the rule. When this rule is applied to a portal group, it will tell the system to unlock the portals in the group according to the group s unlock time spec ONLY if has seen a valid read of the Entrance Unlock access level. Once the system sees a valid read of the Entrance Unlock access level, it will consider that access level valid only until it sees a read of Entrance Relock access level, or until the rule resets automatically at the 7 a.m. daily reset time. Note: Although you can save a First-in Unlock rule without completing step 4, you should specify a daily reset time to ensure that someone is present when the portals unlock each day. The reset time should be before the start time of the portal group s unlock time spec, and close to the time the person with the unlock access level will normally want to gain access. In the retail store example, suppose that no reset time is specified and the store manager needs to open the doors after closing to retrieve something. The following day, the doors will automatically unlock at 9 a.m. even if the manager is not there. This is because the system saw a valid read of the unlock access level the previous evening, and because that access level was still valid at 9 a.m., all of the rule s conditions were satisfied. Create a portal group: This group will contain the portals for the store s front entrances. 1. Select Setup : Access Control : Portal Groups. 2. Create a portal group named Entrance Portals for the front entrance portals. 3. Assign the Store Hours time spec as the portal group s Unlock Timespec. 4. 4 Assign the unlock and relock access levels to the store manager: 1. Select Administration : People and go to the person record of the person who will have the unlock/relock authority in this example, the store manager, Jacquelyn Silver. 2. On the Access Control tab, grant Jacquelyn Silver the Entrance Unlock access level, the access level for unlocking the Entrance Portals portal group. 3. Grant Jacquelyn Silver the Entrance Relock access level, the access level for re-locking the Entrance Portals portal group. 4. Issue Jacquelyn Silver an access card if she does not already have one. 5 Resulting Behaviors On any of the days included in the Store Hours time spec, the behavior of the entrance portals will depend on when Jacquelyn Silver presents her card at an entrance reader. If she presents her card: Before 7 a.m. The appropriate portal will unlock momentarily so she can enter. After 7 a.m. but before 9 a.m. The appropriate portal will unlock momentarily, and then both portals will unlock automatically at 9 a.m. After 9 a.m. Both portals will unlock immediately. Once the portals have unlocked, Jacquelyn can present her card to either reader to toggle the portals between the locked and unlocked state. Both portals will re-lock automatically when the Store Hours time spec expires at 6 p.m. If Jacquelyn does not present her card on a given day, the portals will remain locked.
