3 INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW These engaging, mini-lessons were designed with young children in mind to be used with the interactive whiteboards found in today s classrooms or on any computer. The lessons combine animation, interactivity, sound effects and narration to provide a highquality experience in which children learn about friendship, empathy, listening skills and accepting differences. These mini-lessons are meant to supplement Brad Learns How to Take a Bite Out of Meanness storybook which is included on the CD in an animated version in both English and Spanish. A hard copy of the book is also available through YouthLight, Inc. ( The lessons are easy and intuitive to use. Narration is provided throughout each lesson as well as narrated instructions so that reading is not necessary. Even the youngest students will be able to interact and enjoy these lessons. Reproducible worksheets are included to reinforce the lessons, as well as full-color printable posters that you can laminate and hang in the classrooms or hallways. HOW TO USE This program runs in a self-contained Flash Projector. When you insert the disc into the drive on a PC, you should automatically ally be prompted to run the program. If it does not automtically start or if you are using a MAC, explore the contents of the CD and open the MainMenu application file (MainMenu.exe on a PC) to start the program. After the animation, you will choose from the following menu buttons: Choose to view the story in either English or Spanish. Animation and narration n will automatically begin when the page loads. YouthLight, Inc. Use the arrows to scroll through the five lessons. Click on an icon to select and open that lesson. Opens a pdf file of the four posters in Adobe Reader.* Posters are 11 x 17 and are provided in full-color in both English and Spanish. Opens a 11 page pdf file in Adobe Reader.* Reproducible worksheets are 8.5 x 11 and are provided in full-color. *Adobe Reader is required to open pdf files. A free download is available at Return to the main menu at the end of each interactive lesson or at any time by clicking on the Main Menu link in the bottom toolbar. The Spanish version includes both the narration and the written text translated to Spanish. The animation and narration begins upon your selection. YouthL To turn the page, click on the bottom right corner. You will notice the page corner flips up. You can also click the bottom left corner to flip to the previous page. You can return to the Main Menu at any time by clicking the link in the bottom toolbar.

Brad enlists the help of his friends to find Kia, the Humpback Whale. He encounters many different sea creatures along the way and needs to ask for help from each of them.

Brad will ask for help to find his way to Kia. Each sea creature will answer Brad. The child will then be given the choice whether or not that sea creature is being a true friend based on the answer.

Some will show true friendship with their answer to his plea but others will only lead to a dead end. Children will click and drag Brad through the maze, stopping at each sea creature along the way. Brad will ask for help to find his way to Kia. Each sea creature will answer Brad. The child will then be given the choice whether or not that sea creature is being a true friend based on the answer. The sea creatures that are true friends will join Brad on his way to find Kia. Those who are not, lead to dead ends and will disappear. YouthLight, ht, In In The maze is split into two screens. Once Brad makes it to the end of the maze on the first screen, the maze will automatically change to the second half. When Brad makes it through this part of the maze, he will find his friend Kia, the Humpback Whale. The game can be restarted at any time by pressing the restart button.

Some of the characteristics revealed are positive and some are negative. Children will drag the positive characteristics that are helpful in building strong friendships to the treasure box. They will drag the negative characteristics to the deep dark cave where e they will disappear. YouthLight, ht, In If children attempt to oplace a negative characteristic in the treasure box, the coin will darken and Brad will say that he doesn t want that in his treasure box. Children will then need to drag that coin to the deep dark cave to make it disappear. If children attempt to drag a positive characteristic into the deep dark cave, the coin will darken and the cave will close. Children will then need to drag that coin to Brad s treasure box. The game can be restarted at any time by pressing the restart button.

Brad needs to learn to listen to the positive things people say to him instead of dwelling on the negative things he hears. Press the play button to start t the game.

If they decide it is a mean thing to say, they will click on Brad and drag him to the phrase. Brad will chomp the words and they will disappear.

A phrase will float up from the bottom. Children will decide whether the phrase is a nice thing to say to someone or a mean thing to say. If they decide it is a mean thing to say, they will click on Brad and drag him to the phrase. Brad will chomp the words and they will disappear. If they decide it is a nice thing to say, they will let the phrase float all the way to the top. YouthLight, ht, In If a mean phrase floats all the way to the top, that same phrase will float up again from the bottom until Brad takes a bite out of it. If Brad takes a bite out of a nice phrase, he will jump back and the phrase will continue to float to the top. Once all 8 phrases are marked off, the game is over. Press the restart button to play again.

Kia is a good mentor and friend to Brad. She listens and encourages him. She would like to teach others how to be a good listener. A pearl will automatically appear in the seashell.

If it is a good listening skill, they will drag that pearl to Kia s net to save it from being swept away by the strong undertow.

Children will decide whether the phrase on the pearl is a good listening skill or shows poor listening. If it is a good listening skill, they will drag that pearl to Kia s net to save it from being swept away by the strong undertow. If the phrase shows poor listening, they will drag that pearl to the strong undertow so that it is swept out to sea. YouthLight, ht, In If children drag a pearl to the net that shows poor listening, the pearl will reset back in the shell. If children drag a good listening skill to the strong underow, the pearl will reset back in the shell. As the game progresses, sea creatures float down the undertow stating how good listening makes them feel. The game is over when all of the pearls have either disappeared in the undertow or have been placed in the net. Press the restart button to play again.

Brad is not like the other sharks in the ocean. Sometimes the others even make fun of him. He needs to learn that being different is okay and is what makes him unique and special.

Children will examine them and click on the one they think is different from the others. If they are incorrect, that choice will be crossed out so that it cannot be chosen again.

Children will examine them and click on the one they think is different from the others. If they are incorrect, that choice will be crossed out so that it cannot be chosen again. When the correct creature is chosen, a thumbs up will appear, Brad will do a flip and another four sea creatures will take their place.
