3 It s a Jungle in Here! What You ll Need: white paper plates construction paper crepe paper buttons, ribbon, yarn small and medium boxes plastic margarine tub lids Everyone will go ape with this jungle theme! 27 THE JUNGLE If you re going to teach about animals, a jungle theme will get your kids wild about learning! Children love the jungle, its ferocious animals, the danger, and the unknown. First, decorate your classroom doorway with green and brown crepe paper hung vertically to look like jungle vines. Then, choose some of the ideas below and involve students in turning your classroom into a jungle! Create colorful jungle animal faces on white paper plates. Display these creatures around the room. Write stories about jungle life with their animal paper plate as the main character. Act out some of these stories for more hands-on fun. Encourage students to bring in some of their own stuffed jungle animals. Contain these wild creatures by making cages out of cardboard boxes. Write the name of the animal (and maybe a fact about it) on an index card and label your cages. Frame pictures of jungle animals on plastic lids. Tell students to research their animal and write a zoo-type information card about where they live, what they eat, how long they live, etc. Are they meat-eating animals or do they only eat plants? How much do they eat? Many animals are endangered species. Besides having fun with animals, students can learn about how important they are to our world! Ask Your Students: Why do you think it is important to have zoos all over the world? 4

4 Reading Their Way to a Latte! Older students will get into this Bookstore Cafe hangout! Bookstore Café Make an apron sign for the door that says, Cooking up a good time inside! Ask your local coffee shop for cups, stirrers, napkins, empty coffee bags, or maybe even an apron! Kids will love turning their reading circle into a Bookstore Café by using some of the ideas listed below. Hire students to transform your reading area into a Bookstore Café by: Creating a coffee shop area with tables and chairs. Making posters or table tents of their favorite books and upcoming store events. Categorizing and displaying books, i.e., best sellers, class favorites, history and just plain fun to read. Creating a menu of must reads with book descriptions like foaming good fun, scorching hot, a kick of caffeine, and creamy smooth. Making a bulletin board of paper latte cups, book covers, and empty coffee bags. Promote student-run bookstore activities such as: o Open Mic Night: Students perform readings of their writings. o Author book signings: Students portray their favorite author. o Q & A Night: Invite a local writer into the class to answer questions. o Writers Workshop: Hold an intensive writing exercise. A local writer might be willing to help with this. Coffee shop activities: Kids take turns operating the coffee shop. Juices and milk can be the latte. Students can earn latte coins (foil wrapped circles) by reading. These can be spent at the coffee shop. Students can decorate their own Styrofoam latte cups. Get local authors and writers involved in your class! 5

5 Water, Water everywhere! What You ll Need: clothes hangers twine magazines and poster board cardboard boxes Students will feel the spray of the surf with this oceanarium experience! Display a picture of a surfer or surfboard on your classroom door to set the scene for an ocean-themed classroom. The secret to this ocean theme is for students to splash in and help! Make banners of ocean waves and encourage students to bring items from home that relate to a trip to the beach. Position these things (sunscreen bottles, beach towels, seashells, sand buckets, small water toys) on the banners around the room. Students can draw pictures of themselves playing at the beach to decorate the sand at the bottom of the banners. Kids love anything to do with the beach! (Don t we all?!) Have students create colorful surfboards out of cardboard boxes and paint. Divide students into groups to create mobiles of ocean themes. Some ideas are: o Large fish found in the ocean o Smaller fish and sea life o Types of boats and ships found on the ocean o Careers related to the ocean Display seashells in a clear glass jar (students can share theirs or you can purchase them at a dollar store). Display the oceans of the world on a bulletin board. How do they compare in size? Do they have any unique features? Ask students to write an acrostic poem using the words ocean and/or beach. Ask Your Students: What lives inside seashells? Why are shells necessary for these creatures? 6
