Mintage figures for this year is unknown, but it is estimated that between 200 to 300 pieces have survived. Official mint records show that no half sovereigns were struck in 98 although records in the next two years show that half sovereigns were struck in Perth but never issued. It is possible that half sovereigns were struck in 99 and 920 using 98 dies with the majority of the coins struck being re-melted before release into circulation.
