10 SILVER MAUNDY SETS The now standard four-coin Maundy money issues began with the undated hammered silver penny, twopence, threepence and fourpence (groat) pieces of Charles II. Designed by Thomas Simon, they were first issued on 9 May 660. 12 98 PERTH HALF SOVEREIGN x200% ACTUAL SIZE The final Australian half sovereign was struck in Perth dated 98. Mintage figures for this year is unknown, but it is estimated that between 200 to 300 pieces have survived. Official mint records show that no half sovereigns were struck in 98 although records in the next two years show that half sovereigns were struck in Perth but never issued. It is possible that half sovereigns were struck in 99 and 920 using 98 dies with the majority of the coins struck being re-melted before release into circulation. No other gold half sovereigns dated 98 were ever struck anywhere else in the world. Featuring Jemima, Humpty, Big Ted and Little Ted, the now famous Play School toys, these coins will spark happy memories across generations. 15 DIRK HARTOG FIRST LANDING $ Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Dirk Hartog's first landing in Australia in 66, The Perth Mint has struck a 99.9% pure silver one ounce, one dollar high relief proof with an extremely limited worldwide mintage of only 3000 being released. The reverse depicts a representation of the view through a telescope of Dirk Hartog's ship, the Eendracht, sailing across the ocean aside a compass rose and October 66 in exergue. The coins high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die. 17 MILLION NUMBER ONE POUND Banknotes with a serial number of one million ( ) commenced in Australia circa 927. Numbering machines had only six printing wheels. When the seventh digit was required to complete each series, the serial number was printed on a hand press. The practice was discontinued in 972. (953) ONE POUND STAR Between 948 and 97, Australia's banknote issuing authorities used notes produced in separate printing runs to replace notes that were spoiled in the printing process. They were known as star notes because the last digit of the serial number of each replacement note was an asterisk (or star).
