1 MARCH 2018 STAR REPLACEMENT $2 NOTE Between 1948 and 1971, Australia's banknote issuing authorities used notes produced in separate printing runs to replace notes that were spoiled in the printing process. They were known as star notes because the last digit of the serial number of each replacement note featured an asterisk (or star). The first notes to be replaced in this way were Armitage/Macfarlane ten shillings and one pounds printed in 1942, then five pounds in The practice was not used for the Ten Pound note. For the initial five years of the decimal note series, the practice was continued. Notes produced in the special print runs were identified by a serial number prefix commencing with the letter Z. 3 3 ARMISTICE CENTENARY At 11am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent as an Armistice came into effect, bringing an end to the First World War. In 2018 the Royal Australian Mint commemorates the Armistice Centenary with this evocative coin, stunningly presented in 1oz 99.9% silver, 1kg 99.9% silver and 1/4oz 99.99% gold. $25 1/4oz GOLD, MINTAGE 2500, FDC $ $1 1oz SILVER, MINTAGE 7500, FDC $ $30 1 KILO SILVER, MINTAGE ONLY 50, FDC $ To commemorate the 2018 centenary of the armistice between the Allies and Germany that essentially brought an end to the First World War, the Royal Australian Mint have released the annual six coin uncirculated and proof year sets with a specially designed one dollar coin. The coin is divided by a line that symbolises the Armistice itself with the bottom section representing the period of war that preceded the armistice with a pattern of ammunition cartridges. 4 4 PROCLAMATION CO In late 1800 the Porpoise arrived at Sydney Cove with almost 4 tons ( 550 worth) of 1oz copper, 1797 dated cartwheel pennies struck by Matthew Boulton. Although not confirmed, it is highly likely that the coins were accompanied by directions from the authorities back in England to rectify the unsatisfactory situation of varying exchange rates for the various coins then circulating in the colony. In a bid to ensure that the newly arrived coins were not immediately traded back out, Governor Philip Gidley King issued a proclamation on the 19th November 1800 which artificially inflated the value of coins arriving in the colony of New South Wales. The value of the copper coins was effectively doubled. He also took the opportunity to set the values at which other silver and gold coins then in circulation were to trade. These latter valuations were probably in line with valuations derived by the English Treasury and provided for only a small premium above their nominal values. TABLE OF SPECIE Denomination s. d. 6 GOLD SOVEREIGN The discovery of payable gold in the colony of New South Wales in 1851, lay behind the establishment of the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint, which opened on 14 May Struck by The Perth Mint, this 22 carat gold Australian Proof Sovereign has a face value of $25 and weighs 7.99 grams. 17 17 NEW ZEALAND SERIAL NUMBER 1 MILLION All New Zealand decimal paper banknotes feature six digits in the serial number, excluding a very small number that included a seventh digit which is known as the million serial number. The million numbering was done by hand, where a sheet of notes were reprinted with the appropriate prefixes and number Each note was then taken to a special machine and lined up for the last zero to be printed separately on a hand press. It was almost impossible to achieve a perfect alignment on the final zero and is often out of alignment. This practice was discontinued in the 1990's.
