1 JUNE 2018 AUSTRALIA 2000 $1 MULE One of the most important error coins ever struck by the Royal Australian Mint is the mule one dollar dated The obverse was struck using a ten cent die which can be identified by the wide double rim. This error is referred to as a mule - as the 10 cent obverse is not associated with the 1 dollar reverse. The mint does acknowledge the error did occur, but they do not have any records of how many were struck. 4 30 TH ANNIVERSARY OF TH On 20th June 1988, the $2 coin joined Australia's array of circulating currency. With its release came the opportunity to honour our country's Indigenous population, with Horst Hahne's depiction of Ainslie Roberts' drawing of an Aboriginal elder taking pride of place on the coin's reverse. To mark the 30th anniversary of the two dollar coin, this three-coin set commemorates the well known $2 design, struck by the Royal Australian Mint. With a tiny mintage of just 1988, each coin features one of the three obverses to adorn the coin over the past three decades while the reverse features the well known Aboriginal elder design. 5 5 E AUSTRALIAN $2 COIN Since 2012, special commemorative releases have acknowledged the sacrifices of those who have served in military conflict, with ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day releases becoming highly sought after collectables. In 2013, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 60 years on the throne and a special purple coloured coin marked this milestone. 7 A LEGEND OF STEAM The 3801 locomotive entered into operation for NSW Railways in The 38 class were the last express passenger steam locomotives built for the state rail service and would go on to have successful tenures hauling all the principal trains such as the Newcastle Flyer and the Melbourne expresses. In 1970, 3801 was the first engine to haul a train over the newly standardised transcontinental line from Sydney to Perth. The locomotive was invited to repeat this journey in 1988 as part of the Bicentennial celebrations. To help celebrate the 75th anniversary of its entry into service, 3801 will return to operation in 2018 after an absence of over ten years and a lengthy overhaul and restoration. To celebrate this historic event, the Royal Australian Mint has struck a cupro-nickel 50 cent coin featuring the 3801 at full steam embellished with a coloured print of the engine s distinctive green and yellow colour. 9 AUSTRALIA'S CONVICT ERA RASCALS & RATBAGS In 2018 we mark the 230th anniversary of the First Fleet s arrival and the 150th anniversary of the voyage of the Hougoumont, which bore the last of the convicts transported to Australia.
