2 Hello all, PRESIDENT'S COLUMN Do you look at foreign money and dismiss it thinking, It s all Greek to me!? Well it s time to take another look. At our first meeting this month, your humble president will introduce you to some tips and tricks to help you tell your rupees from your rubles. As a hopeless generalist who collects everything, I frequently encounter coins I ve never seen before, but every mystery coin has clues to its origin that a little detective work can uncover. Collecting world coins certainly presents challenges to U.S. coin collectors, being used to a decimal system, relatively stable money, and a familiar alphabet. Armed with a little knowledge though, the bewildering variety of world coinage will start to actually make some sense. Speaking of variety, I d like to commend our membership for the fascinating plethora of treasures we get to see at show-and-tell each meeting. I think the addition of a voluntary theme each month has encouraged our members to take a second look at pieces of their collections they might otherwise not think of to share. Due to some confusion about which meeting the theme applies to, we re officially making the theme apply to both meetings for the month. That way there s no wrong meeting to bring your themed coin to. As always, if you re feeling rebellious, and want to share something not part of the theme, feel free to do so. It s all good! What s the theme for this month, then? Beards! Yes, long, flowing, facial hair was all the rage in the 19 th century (and the 2 nd for that matter), and it seems to be making a comeback in recent years. Let s see some of the great beards of history to appear on money. Move over ZZ Top! Edwin M.
