Throughout the story, Angela struggles with self-doubt. At the end of the story, she finally realizes that she is able to succeed and her self-doubt goes away. The theme is developed in the story through the relationship between Angela and Peter. At first, Angela is in awe of Peter because he is mysterious. Peter challenges her in school because according to Angela, My grades are nothing compared to Peter s. Peter also has a creative mind and is able to create inventions such as his time machine. After winning the writing contest, Angela realizes that Peter admires her creative ability to write just as much as she admires him. Another way that the theme is developed in the story is through Angela s love of writing. Even though she loves writing, she lacks confidence in her creative ability to write. According to the story, Angela has a lot of ideas but struggles with finding the right words as English is not her first language. Angela uses Peter s time machine to see the writing that wins the contest. She uses this information to write her own story. After she wins, she feels bad because she thinks she cheated. Through the help of Peter, she realizes that her idea for a story was the winner and that she can succeed. Angela s love of writing and her friendship with Peter are two events that help develop the theme in the story, LAFF from Best Shorts.
