3 28 TEXTURES AND TECHNIQUES TEXTURES AND TECHNIQUES 29 COVERING ITEMS WITH METAL Corners The following are the various ways of covering the corners of blanks with metal. Individual projects will require different techniques to give the best results. CUTTING CORNERS AT A 45-DEGREE ANGLE This is ideal for covering thin, flat surfaces such as book covers (see Notebook, page 58). Overlapping two pieces of metal This technique is an alternative to wrapping and was used in the Orange metal mirror project (see page 62). 1. Start by glueing the metal at the edge of a corner and folding it over to the front of the blank. Smooth the edge with a paper stub. 2. Place a second piece of metal on the other side of the same corner and repeat the glueing and folding. 3. The metal will overlap on top of the blank. 1. Cut the metal about 1 cm larger than the blank you want to cover. After embossing, stick the metal in place on the blank. 2. Cut the corners of the metal at a 45-degree angle, and don t trim right up to the edge of the blank. Leave enough extra metal, the thickness of the blank, so that no wood will be exposed when the corners are wrapped. 3. Bend the metal around the blank, then stick it down with glue or double-sided adhesive tape. Smooth the edges with a paper stub or Teflon tip tool. CUTTING CORNERS AT A 90-DEGREE ANGLE (A TECHNIQUE ALSO KNOWN AS WRAPPING) Wrapping works well on thicker surfaces, such as box canvases. This method was used for the Faith project (page 78). 1. Measure the height of the blank object to be covered with metal and add that measurement to the size of the metal before cutting and embossing. 2. Stick the embossed metal to the blank, overlapping the edge. Cut away the overlapping metal at a 90-degree angle to form a corner. 3. Apply adhesive to the overlapping metal and fold it over the side of the blank. Pressing down firmly on a hard surface while folding will result in a neat folded line and a neatly covered corner. 4. Smooth the edges and joins, using the side of a paper stub or a Teflon tip tool. Covering round or curved surfaces When working with curved designs it is best to cut small snips in the metal, using small scissors. This will make is easier to fold the metal over without creasing it. CUTTING SNIPS AND FOLDING OVER (see Zoo-metalling project, page 72) 1. Cut the metal out about 1 cm (½ in) bigger than the outline of the blank you want to cover. 2. Cut small snips about 5 mm (¼ in) from each other all around the overlapping metal edge. 3. Fold the metal over to the back of the blank and neaten it using a Teflon tip tool or a paper stub. CUTTING TO THE SHAPE OF THE OBJECT WITH NO FOLDING OVER (see Light switch cover project, page 114) 1. Cut the metal the exact size of the object you would like to cover. 2. Stick it in place with double-sided adhesive tape or glue and smooth the edges with a Teflon tip tool or paper stub once the glue has dried. 3. To cut open the hole in a light switch cover or a similar project, you need to work from the back. Cut across the opening in a X shape, using a craft knife, and fold the points back through the hole. Stick the folded metal down with adhesive tape and smooth the edges.

4 46 BEGINNERS BEGINNERS 47 Metal 2 Bunny photo pegs This is a fun project that s fairly quick and very easy to make. You can use any size wooden block (painted or left natural) for the background surface and as many squares as you wish, depending on the effect you want to achieve and the space you want to fill. craft metal in various colours, embossing machine embossing folders, texture plates or stencils of your choice paper stub 8 square (10 x 10 cm/4 x 4 in) Supawood squares double-sided adhesive tape sanding block soft cloth wooden block (25 x 45 cm/ 10 x 17¾ in) painted beige, using acrylic paint, and given a distressed finish Bostik clear glue masking tape scissors 1. Cut the metal into 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) squares with scissors and stick it down onto your chosen texture using masking tape. 2. Machine emboss the metal squares, using your chosen texture. 3. Sand some of the colour away to create a nice contrast in the colours. 4. Wipe the metal with a damp cloth to get rid of all the sanding dust. 5. Stick the metal pieces to the Supawood squares, using the adhesive tape. 6. Glue the squares onto your chosen wooden background, using clear glue and leave to dry. These days, most of our photos are stored on our phones or computers. We hope that this project will inspire you to print a few of your favourites and let the bunnies display them. The photos are pegged on, so when you get tired of the current display, it s easy to swop them for new ones! coloured craft metals of your choice Supawood cut-out shapes (drill a hole for threading the string) fine-point black permanent marker scissors embossing machine embossing folder or texture plate of your choice sanding block Bostik clear glue tracing tool or sharp stylus string beads mini pegs soft cloth 1. Trace the shape of the Supawood cut-outs onto the back of your chosen craft metal, using the black marker. 2. Cut out the shapes, using a pair of scissors. 3. Machine emboss the metal cut-outs and buff away some of the colour. Whipe clean with a soft cloth to get rid of all the sanding dust. 4. Glue the embossed metal onto the front of each Supawood shape. 5. Make a hole through the metal using the tracing tool or stylus. 6. Thread each shape onto a piece of string. Tie a knot and thread a few beads between the shapes. Remember to leave enough space for your photos in-between. 7. Glue mini pegs onto the back of each shape and wait until they are dry before you hang your photographs.

5 64 FRAMES AND MIRRORS Industrial photo frame I up-cycled one of my tired-looking wooden picture frames into this weathered, industrial style photo frame. Then, for a finishing touch, I added the red hearts. 1. Cut the silver metal into strips, using a craft knife or scissors (my roll of adhesive tape is 7 cm (2¾ in) wide so I cut the metal to the same width as the tape). 2. Stick one side of the adhesive tape onto the back of the metal strips. 3. Cut the metal into squares and rectangles of varying sizes. 4. Peel the backing paper from the tape and stick the shapes onto the frame, making sure they overlap slightly. 5. Use a small embossing ball or metal pattern roller to emboss dots or lines into the metal. I used a ball tool and pressed it into a piece of felt from the back to create a nail effect on some of the squares before glueing them down. 6. When the frame is covered, paint the whole surface with brown acrylic paint. Make sure it goes into all the embossed lines and dots. Just before the paint has completely dried, take a clean cloth and gently wipe the paint off, leaving just enough to give a weathered look. 7. 6 72 WALL ART Zoo metalling I really like the look of polished silver metal. For this project, I wanted to create an effect that made the animals look like metal objects. You can use any Supawood laser cut-out designs you like, as long it will not be too difficult to fold the metal around the edges. 1. Cut the coloured metal pieces to fit onto the box canvases. 2. Machine emboss these pieces and sand away some of the colour to reveal the design. Glue the metal pieces onto the box canvases and set them aside to let the glue dry. The following instructions are for machine embossing the animals: 3. Place the Supawood cut-outs on top of the A plate and place the metal on top of the cut-out, followed by the rubber and a thin spacer. Make sure your sandwich is not too thick to fit through the embossing machine. 4. After machine embossing, the outline of the design will show clearly on the metal. Cut out the designs 1 cm (½ in) bigger than the outline, all round. 5. Cut small inserts from the edge of the metal to the outline of the design. This will make it easier to fold the metal over the cut-out. 6. Glue the metal onto the cut-out shapes using double sided tape. 7. Fold the sides over to the back of the cut-out and smooth the edges with the paper stub. 8. Buff the pieces, using the sand block, to enhance the metallic look. 9. 7 82 TRAYS AND COASTERS TRAYS AND COASTERS 83 Project doily Antique coaster set Inspired by Grandma s doily my Grandma had a whole drawer set aside for her doilies. They were probably one of the most favoured kitchen accessories back then. And now, suddenly, they seem to be popping up everywhere. Mine is made from craft metal using the metal glazing technique (see page 36). Create a single plate as a showpiece or make a set of four or six with different doily underplates. white craft metal doily-design stencil or paper cut-out alcohol inks: 2 3 colours matching or contrasting to the colour of the under plate, and alcohol blending solution masking tape hand-embossing tools sanding block Gold or Bronze gilders paste 1. Cut the metal slightly bigger than the stencil/paper cut-out you are using, but still small enough to fit into the centre of the plate. 2. Colour the metal with a glaze of alcohol inks (see page 39). 3. Using masking tape, stick the stencil/paper cut-out down in the centre of the metal on the silver side. 4. Hand emboss the design onto the metal. Make sure all the lines are neatly defined before removing the metal. 5. Lightly sand the embossed area to give it some grip for the gilders paste to adhere to. 6. Apply several layers of gilders paste until a satin-smooth gold finish is achieved (see page 40). 7. Apply a layer of marine silicone to the back of the metal, stick it down in the centre of the plate and leave for a couple of hours to dry. 8. Protect the piece by covering the embossed metal with a layer of Pratliglo. The stencil used to create the texture for this project is very fine and thin, and was designed for card making or scrapbooking. I specifically chose it because I didn t want high relief, because the cut-out centres of the coasters are filled with polymer resin (on top of the metal). This gives the coasters a beautiful, durable finish. Mixing the paint lightly results in an uneven finish, which gives the coasters a weathered look. 1. Cut six metal circles to fit tightly into the cut-out centres of the coasters. 2. Machine emboss the metal disks, with the silver side of the metal facing the stencil. 3. Blend the patina colours lightly and apply a thin, uneven layer using a soft tip brush, to the embossed pieces.this will result in a rich antique look. 4. Sand as much of the colour away as you wish and wipe away all the metal dust with a damp cloth. 5. Stick the metal pieces snugly in the coasters, using adhesive tape. 6. Fill the hollows in the coasters with Pratliglo and leave to dry on a flat surface.

8 116 QUICK IDEAS Key tag This Supawood blank tag was decorated on both sides, using cream craft metal and a heart-shaped card cut-out to achieve a high relief look. First machine emboss the craft metal using a shell texture plate, then stick the heart to the silver side of the metal using adhesive tape. Turn it over and hand emboss the heart shape onto the cream side using a paper stub. Leave the cardboard heart in place. Colour the metal around the embossed heart. Clay and Cinnabar patina will give it an antique look. Stick the finished piece onto the wooden tag with marine silicon. Repeat for the back of the tag but omit the heart. Put it aside for a couple of hours to allow the silicon to dry. Key tags are handled a lot, so remember to spray the finished product with clear varnish to protect the colour on the metal. Metal-rimmed chalkboard label You will find dozens of uses for these cute labels. The best part is you can change the wording on it to suit your needs. Glued onto a wooden crate or box, it can be used for herbs, cutlery, condiments, books, bathroom goodies or a personal message. I used a Supawood oval as a template, tracing it onto the metal using a ball tool, and onto the chalkboard sticker using a pencil. The chalkboard sticker went onto the wooden oval, while I hand embossed a low relief border pattern around the inside of the metal oval, using ball tools and textured pattern wheels. Before cutting out the oval frame, I aged it with black acrylic paint (see page 35). The frame was glued into position with clear glue.

9 Craft metal has endless decorative possibilities. It is pliable and can be wrapped around or adhered to any surface you can imagine. This book is all about using coloured craft metal decorating it by means of embossing, cutting out designs, adding further colour, taking away colour and filling in 3D designs and much more to customise blanks and found objects for your home. You will learn more about the metal and supporting mediums, and how to use the tools and familiarise yourself with several techniques, all of which can be applied in making more than 50 decorative and functional items.
