Station 1: Magnetic, or Not? 1. Fill in the chart with the items available at your station. 2. Make a prediction about whether or not each item is magnetic. 3. Test each item and record your results in the chart.
Station 2: Floating Ring Magnets 1. Try balancing the magnets on the spindle. 2. Answer the questions on your lab sheet. 3. Use the straw as a spindle now, and combine more than one kit. 4. Answer the questions on the lab sheet.
Station 3: How Many Paperclips? 1. Test each magnet s strength by using it to pick up as many paperclips as possible. 2. Record the number of paperclips in the data table. 3. Answer the questions on the lab sheet.
Station 4: Magnetic Field Demonstrators 1. This is a Magnetic Field Demonstrator. Use the magnet to make different designs with the iron filings inside. 2. With your group, create 3 different patterns and draw them in the boxes.
Station 5: I Ate Iron? Many cereals are iron-fortified, meaning the companies add iron to them. We need to take in a certain amount of iron, since our bodies use it to make hemoglobin which carries oxygen. 1. MAKE SURE you keep the magnets in the Ziploc baggies when you place them in the bowls. 2. Test the magnet on the cereal that has not been crushed. Is it attracted? 3. Record the % Daily Value of Iron in each cereal. 4. With the magnet IN THE BAGGIE, stir the cereal/water mixture. 5. Draw the results of how much iron stuck to the magnet for each cereal and write your observations in the chart.
Station 6: Is the Magnet Strong Enough? 1. Place the magnet on one side of the paper and see if it can still pick up paperclips THROUGH the paper! 2. Write down the maximum number of paperclips you can pick up, and test the other substances as well. 3. Answer the questions on the sheet.
Station 7: Magnets and Compasses 1. A compass needle is a tiny magnet on a pivot so that it can turn with minimal force. 2. Arrange your bar magnet and your compasses like the template in your lab sheet. 3. Fill in your compass rose and draw arrows to show which direction each needle is facing. 4. Make observations about how the needles point in relation to the poles.
Name: Class: Date: Magnet Stations Station 1: Magnetic, or not? First, write each object s name in the first column and make a prediction as to whether you think it will be magnetic, or not. Then test each object and write your results under Actual. Object Prediction Actual 2. How many rings can you get to float total if you use a straw as your center spindle and combine multiple kits. 3. What happens to the space between each magnet as you add more? 4. Why do you think this happens to the space? Station 3: How many paperclips? Magnet How many paperclips can you pick up? North Pole of Bar Magnet South Pole of Bar Magnet Tube-Shaped Magnet Conclusion Questions: 1. Did the results of any objects surprise you? Ring-Shaped Magnet (without plastic coating) 2. What other objects would you like to test? Ring-Shaped Magnet (with plastic coating) 1. Which magnet was the strongest? Station 2: Floating Ring Magnets Try to balance the ring magnets on the center bar and see how they interact. 1. How can you make the rings all float on the center spindle? 2. Which magnet was the weakest? 3. Were there any surprises?
Station 4: Magnetic Field Demonstrators You are going to test different magnets with the magnetic field demonstrators. Sketch three different patterns that you made with the magnetic field demonstrator: Station 6: Is the magnet strong enough? You are going to test the strength of a magnet through different materials. Fill in the chart below with your findings. Substance # of Paperclips Observations Computer Paper Lined Paper Construction Paper File Folder Cardboard 1. Was your magnet strong enough to pass through all five substances? 2. What other items could you test? Ask your teacher if she has those items and write your findings below: Station 5: I ate iron? Be sure to follow the directions on the sheet at the lab station. Fill in the table: Station 7: Magnets and Compasses. See the directions on the sheet at the station. Name of Cereal % of Iron listed Scooby Doo per serving Draw the amount of iron pulled out Observations N S Corn Pops Bran Flakes 1. What did you learn about magnets and compasses?
