How much rust(rating scale) Name Shriyansh Sharma Date //0 Period Forming the Investigation Manipulated Variable (I change) independent: The type of nails being used in the experiment. Response Variable (I measure) dependent: The amount of corrosion that appears during the five day period.. What is the question I will answer with this investigation? Which nail the uncoated nail, electroplated nail, or hot dipped nail will resists the most corrosion in Diet Pepsi and Baking soda in a five day period?. Background Information: Several things I already know about this topic, that will help me to design a successful investigation, are. Zinc does corrode in rust. Zinc when rusted looks more duller. Uncoated steel corrodes in water. Steel corrodes a lot when exposed to water. Oil protects water from air. Predict in words what I think will happen during my investigation (hypothesis). Then, use the graph to sketch my predicted results. I think the uncoated nail will corrode the most in Diet Pepsi and Baking Soda. While in second the hot dipped will corrode the probably the same amount. But electroplated will be the one that is most protected since the zinc is put on from an electric current Baking soda Diet Pepsi Uncoated Hot Dipped Electroplated Coating Type Rating Scale: 0: No iron oxide visible whatsoever; perfectly shiny 7: Hardly recognized has a steel nail : Unable to recognize without a long stare; barely visible : No trace of rusting, but visible of little forms : Iron Oxide rust being formed : Can actually clearly recognized that rust has formed : Wrapped with Iron Oxide 6: Challenging to find a lustrous spot on the nail
Designing the Investigation Variables I will keep the same for a fair test: Amount of time = days Same type of container = test tubes Amount of water = 0 ml Type of nails = steel Same temperature = room temperature = Safety: Materials: six stoppers, six test tubes, diet Pepsi, graduated cylinder, baking soda, two uncoated steel nails, two galvanized electroplated steel nails, two galvanized hot dipped steel nails, microscope, lab scoop and test tube rack Numbered and detailed procedure with a drawing of my set-up. ) Gather the materials above; place the test tube into the test racks ) Place a electroplated steel nails in two tubes ) Place a hot-dipped steel nails in two tubes ) Place a uncoated steel nails in two tubes ) In one of each test tube pour ml of diet Pepsi 6) In the rest of the test tubes pour ml of water. 7) Using your lab scoop, scoop one lab scoop of Baking Soda in each of your test tubes. Putting a stopper shake the test tubes for one minute. 8) Label the test tubes with what environment they have and also what type of nail. 9) What for five days for the results 0) After the five days, carefully take out the nails and analyze the rust amount with the microscope. Also refer to the rating scale of rust amounts. Rate the amount of rust (Record)
Collecting and Presenting Data Title: Corrosion of the uncoated nail, electroplated nail, hot-dipped nail in Diet Pepsi and Baking Soda in a five day period. Nails Uncoated Hot-dipped Electroplated Environments (Down) Diet Pepsi 7 Baking Soda Title: Corrosion of the uncoated nail, electroplated nail, hot-dipped nail in Diet Pepsi and Baking Soda in a five day period. Baking soda Diet Pepsi 0 Uncoated Hot Dipped Electroplated Rating Scale: 0: No iron oxide visible whatsoever; perfectly shiny 7: Hardly recognized as a steel nail : Unable to recognize without a long stare; barely visible : No trace of rusting, but visible of little forms : Iron Oxide rust being formed : Can actually clearly recognized that rust has formed : Wrapped with Iron Oxide 6: Challenging to find a lustrous spot on the nail
Analyzing and Interpreting Results Question: (from p. ) Which nail the uncoated nail, electroplated nail, or hot dipped nail will resist the most corrosion in Diet Pepsi and Baking soda in a five day period? Introductory Sentence: Overview I found out that Oxygen and Water are both needed to show visible amount of rusting I also found out that Diet Pepsi encourages rusting, and that baking soda protects the nail from any large performance of rusting.. Evidence In our investigation of corrosion, I found out that the uncoated steel nail corroded most in Diet Pepsi and Baking Soda. While for the electroplated nail it corroded a lot in Diet Pepsi, while in Baking Soda it corroded by a small margin more than the Hot-Dipped nail. For the Hot-Dipped nail it corroded the least in both environments. For example, the Hot-Dipped nail corroded on the rating scale a in Diet Pepsi. While the electroplated nail corroded a in Diet Pepsi.. Explanation: The reason we got the results we did was because, first of all, oxygen is needed to even start forming corrosion. The acid in the Diet Pepsi strips off contaminants and increases the speed at which this process takes place. The acid in the Diet Pepsi also has oxygen in it and when it meets up with zinc. Zinc oxide is formed. In other words a Diet Pepsi environment has properties that lead to corrosion. Baking soda with water in the other hand is a product that has properties that are resistive to rust.
. Problems. Conclusion One problem during the investigation was In conclusion, our results show that hot-dipped while making the baking soda solution I nails resist the most corrosion in environments mistakenly used different amounts of baking of Baking Soda and Diet Pepsi. soda. This would have caused our data to be less reliable since the experiment would be unfair for the electroplated nail against the Hot- Dipped nail. Leaving the results to be tad-bit off or it could be entirely off. A future experiment or revision we could do is to see if a Vaseline environment could corrode more than the Diet Pepsi and Baking Soda environment.
