It s Exciting! by Joni Owens What exciting times we have had Discovering God s Power these last few years! Kindergartners love to explore, show off their power skills, and help others. The story of Creation allows children to explore God s world. Abraham s life revealed God s power to bless and consequently teaches the children God will bless them too. The power of God delivered Israel time and again from desperate situations, and still today shows the children how His power will help them. There is nothing like the exciting power of God! I am excited to bring a new Kindergarten curriculum to you next quarter (fall). We have updated the format, improved the presentation, and brought in new ideas (and kept some faithful tried-and-true favorites), all while keeping the same message of God's Word. The fall quarter is titled God Made Me with a theme called Color My World. Dottie the Dot will introduce the children to God's colorful creation. Order your fall material early so you can get a head start reviewing it and planning your décor. Check our website for updates on the new quarter and a preview look at the theme pages. I want to thank you for providing input through the years to help us develop the best Kindergarten curriculum that connects children to Jesus and His Word. We are committed to providing sound Apostolic curriculum that is teacher friendly, age appropriate, and fun! Please continue to share your praise reports, photos, comments, and questions so we can work together to save our children. God bless you as you once again help your children discover God s power!

Theme Development God s Treasure Chest God created a world that waits to be discovered. There are hidden secrets and delights for all ages. Wherever you live, whatever your circumstances, there are gifts more precious than gold for you and your class to uncover. We are going on a Treasure Hunt! Little is needed in the way of equipment to enjoy the power and glory of God s world. Even in New York City there is grass and insect life to be found on the edges of the asphalt. You cannot keep God s creation down. Start collecting butter tubs, glass jars with lids, and clear, plastic cupcake boxes. Things that will aid your discoveries include magnifiers, binoculars, and cameras. (Parents love to receive s showing photos of their children in Sunday school.) Insect repellent, butterfly nets (from the dollar store), pails, and shovels or old spoons are also needed. Some Sundays you may choose to take the children outside for a treasure hunt; let them explore and see what they can find. Other Sundays you may have a show-n-tell session where the children bring in discoveries from their own backyard. There are a few rules to keep in mind when exploring the outdoors. First, you must respect any property you visit. Even vacant property actually belongs to someone. Always ask permission before wandering onto someone s land. Secondly, when on public property, be it a park in your town or a national forest, remember not to pick any plants or leave any trash behind. Along many church parking areas are wildflowers. Cut the flowers by their stems instead of pulling them up by the roots if you want them to come back next year. Dandelions can be pulled up by the roots (if you are able) to study their root systems. The real treasure during this quarter will be found in each child s heart as he learns about the promises and blessings of God, as demonstrated by you. Luke the Explorer Meet the new kid in your classroom, Luke the explorer, a curious boy, and his curious cat, Lightning. Together with your students they will find all sorts of treasures this quarter. The student paper includes stories featuring these two characters to help reinforce the lesson aims. Cut out the life-size stand-up figures from the resource packet. Mount these to foam core, adding an easel prop to the back for standing. Place these characters in a different spot each week; challenge the children to be the first to find where Luke and Lightning are hiding (not necessarily together). Room Decor Mount the door poster showing a treasure chest labeled, God s Gold. Cut the lid on the dotted line and prop it slightly ajar, allowing you to mount items inside the box. Consider adding fake jewels to the poster, and lightly spraying gold glitter on it as well. Each month or week add a treasure, allowing it to peek out of the chest to catch the children s attention. Ideas might include: black paper with chalk lightning bugs drawn all over it; add gold glitter to each tail; gravel, spray-painted gold, glued to a sheet of cardboard; a picture of a candle or sun, with rays of gold glitter radiating; golden bumblebees made from chenille craft wire, flying out of chest (extended on more wire); streaks of gold-foil lightning on black paper. Decorate your room with God s color palette, the rainbow. If you usually display each center s title in a solid hue, use alternating colored letters for a rainbow effect. Use bright colors; avoid mixing in pastels. Three nature scenes will be used: a beach, a garden, and a weather center. Use a treasure chest to present your lesson. Treasure chests can be found at party supply stores, or consider converting an inexpensive trunk (apply gold spray paint and add fake jewels found at craft stores). Position it in your worship area with an open Bible in front of it. An object lesson or visual aid can be removed from the chest to introduce the lesson. Decorate the wall behind your worship area as a beach scene. The top third of the wall is blue sky, the next third is aqua water, and the bottom third is beach sand. Use sand paper for a real beach effect, or sprinkle sand onto brown paper covered with glue. Use the transparency art in the resource packet to create dolphins jumping out of the water, a whale spouting water, starfish on the beach, and seagulls in the sky. Use bright colors to create a rainbow in the sky. Mount real seashells on the beach. Against another wall, create a garden center with a worktable standing on an old plastic tablecloth. This is the messy center. Lots of projects, including attendance, can take place here. Store watering cans, shovels, a deep tray of sand, and a pail of water under the table. To create the outdoor look, add silk trees and plants. On the wall add blue paper sky, green paper grass, brown tree and bush trunks. Cut leaves and bushes from construction paper and attach to trunks. To start a garden, staple three or four silk flowers to the wall. Cut a birdbath from tan construction paper, and add blue plastic wrap for water. Children will watch their garden grow and discover the wonders of God s world each week as an attendance record. (See Attendance on page 6.) Post Garden Treasures in large bright letters on the wall; add silk flowers to Teacher Tip If possible, let the children help you decorate the room. A sense of pride and ownership means a lot to this age group, especially to children of non-church families. Have a decorating party, with all supplies laid out, and teenagers for helpers. Be sure the children understand what you want, but then let them be creative: do not expect perfection. After all, this is their room.

Teacher Tip When covering large wall areas, consider buying tablecloth rolls. These are available at party supply stores in 100-foot rolls in a variety of colors, so there should be enough for several quarters (or several classrooms when shared with other teachers). Standard colors include blue (sky or water), green (grass), black (darkness), gold (palace or temple), and all primary colors. When stapled tautly to the wall, they can be drawn on and painted on. (Paint will bleed through to the wall as this is thin plastic; be sure to place cardboard behind the plastic before painting, then remove it once paint is dry.) Some stores carry printed paper rolls: bricks, flowers, clouds. Check online for possible sources. Be aware that in humid areas mold could grow behind the tablecloths. 4 some of the letters. Position the children s activity table in this area. Set up a weather center near a window, if possible. This area can be posted as God s Powerful Weather Station. Hang binoculars, a rain gauge, sunglasses, and a bright umbrella (for showers of blessings) from the ceiling. Mount the Weather Chart from the resource packet on this wall. Cut out the weather symbols and place them in separate envelopes; mount these to the wall beside the chart, open for children to access. Note the weather each Sunday before prayer requests are taken. Let a child (visitor, birthday child, or draw names) select the appropriate symbol and add it to the chart. Weather is powerful and covers our church, just like prayer. Make this the offering station, letting the children place their coins into a rain gauge. Keep an extra treasure chest near the door. As children earn rewards (birthdays, good behavior, helper, memory verse), distribute or let them select prizes from the chest. Prizes can include candy, party favors (come in multi-packs; break open for multiple prizes), fancy pens and pencils, small notepads. Try to keep all items of equal value. Several lessons call for prizes this quarter. Prizes need not be expensive or elaborate. Simple penny candy (Smarties, mini LifeSavers, M&Ms, Tootsie Rolls, suckers, etc.), pencils, stickers, and multi-pack party favors are inexpensive and rewarding for a kindergartner. Buy candy in bulk for a good mixture. Some party supply stores sell mini toy prizes in bulk bags. Ask your local fast food stores for any outdated kids meal prizes they could donate to your church. Bulletin Boards Decorated walls make a larger-than-life impression. Imagine walking into a room that looks like the outdoors! However, not all churches have the luxury of full-room decorating, so several bulletin board ideas are provided. Consider using some of the above ideas in limited fashion for your classroom situation. Ten Pearls (Exodus 20:1-17) This interactive board will help the children learn this quarter s special memory passage, a condensed Ten Commandments for kids. Ten clamshells swing open to reveal the commandment inside, written on a pearl. This may be a bulletin board, or consider using one area of the beach wall (this would put the shells closer to the children s level). Cover the top quarter of the board with blue or green material to represent the ocean. The rest of the board can be covered in brown, yellow, or gold material to resemble the ocean beach. Brown paper sacking with a layer of glue and sand sprinkled on it can be more realistic. A shell, starfish, or other beachcombing delights should be added. Cut round, white pearls (circles) of paper to spell Ten Pearls. Add the shine symbol (#) in the same place on each pearl, after the letters are put together. Cut ten extra pearls for the inside of each clamshell. Apply gold spray paint to both sides of twenty-two paper plates. When dry, cut two of these plates into six pie-shaped wedges; these represent the flange of each clamshell. Glue one flange to a painted plate face, allowing the outer circular edge to protrude about an inch; do this to ten plates. To each of these plate faces attach a 1-inch square of white Velcro. Fasten two plates (one plate with flange to be the bottom of the shell; one plate without flange to be inverted for the top) together like a clamshell with a brad fastener at the flange. Do this for ten gold clamshells. Staple the shells to the bulletin board so that the flange shows at the top of the clamshell, and check each top shell for ease of opening. (Clamshells should be scattered, as though they washed up on the beach in numerical order, of course.) Alternate Idea: Obtain ten clear, round, 8-inch clamshell food containers from a local produce store or restaurant. Apply gold spray paint inside and out. Attach a 1-inch Velcro square to inside bottom. Staple (or use strong tacks) to wall.

Attach the opposite pieces of 1-inch Velcro squares to each of ten ping-pong balls. With a fine-tip permanent marker, write a commandment (shortened version) on each ball. Secure balls to clamshells. Next to each clamshell, post the commandment picture (see teacher s resource packet) to help your students remember the numbered commandment. This beautiful board allows you to review with your students, and allows them to review by themselves. God s Paints! For a vibrant, eye-catching look, cover the board with black or dark blue paper. All attachments should be in bright, vibrant colors. Post the title in the upper left-hand corner of the board: GOD S in all white lettering, P red, A orange, I yellow, N green, T blue, S violet,! pink. Cut from brown paper a large artist s palette and attach it to the bottom right of the board. The colors of the rainbow are posted left to right in arcs from around the edges of the palette, leading to its corresponding color in the title. To create these arcs of color, display items from nature from each color. These can be cut from magazines, things in your house, things found outside, etc. For example, the red arc might contain a red flower, a red sunset, a red lizard, a red bug, a red lobster, a red tongue, and a red bird. Orange may include orange pumpkins, an orange Gila monster, orange butterflies, oranges, orange birds, and orange juice. Be creative. The choices are unlimited. Food: A Blessing from God Food s from od This quarter covers the power and glory of God, and includes the truth that He has power to bless. One blessing from God is our daily food. Let the children build this bulletin board (or wall) throughout the quarter. Collect magazines, sales flyers, and food ads. Select the most colorful pages and mount these on the bulletin board until it is covered. Add a yellow rectangle of paper in the center to represent the dinner table (aerial view). Set the table with small, white paper plates (one per child) and brightly colored napkins, stapled into place. Down the center of this table add the title, Food Is from God, using red cutout letters for the lower case letters, and blue plastic knives for the capital letters. Fill a picnic basket with magazine pictures of food; place it on the floor below this board. Every Sunday, let each child choose one food item and add it to his plate (provide glue sticks). As the child adds the food item he repeats, Food is a blessing from God! Attendance Since many children have no control over their church attendance, make attendance rewarding by letting them add to the room décor. Have lots of craft supplies on hand at the garden center. Use your imagination or let the children use theirs to create bees, butterflies, dragonflies, birds, and other nature wonders from construction paper, tissue paper, and chenille craft wire. Pompoms glued to craft sticks make great caterpillars. Coffee filters colored with markers and gathered in the center make butterflies; add small pieces of chenille wire for antennae. Or, find a child s coloring book with these wonders and allow the children to color the art. Cut out and add to the wall, folding out wings to make a 3-D effect. Place the flying creatures in the air, on branches, or at the birdbath. Crawling creatures can be on leaves, in the grass, or crawling up the tree trunk. Occasionally, let students select and add silk flowers to the garden. The children will enjoy displaying their works of art. Have sample creations available for the children to copy. If it is not possible for you to decorate a wall, copy the master garden scene from the resource packet, one per child. The first week he attends, the child colors only the grass. The second week he colors the sky. The third week he colors the child. After that he colors one of the remaining wonders of God s creation. As students color, discuss wonders of God s creation. Memory Work To help your kindergartners firmly lock the Word of God in their heart and mind, we have reduced the memory work from thirteen verses down to three, one per unit. This allows the students several weeks to learn a verse, a method that will keep the Word alive throughout their lifetime. A fresh activity each week not only explains the verse, but also applies it to a kindergartner s life. Instead of a weekly memory chart and sticker option, the weekly activities involve, encourage, and frequently reward the students for participation. Ten Commandments Shortened Version 1. Worship only God. 2. Do not worship statues. 3. Be careful with God s name. 4. Keep Sunday special. 5. Obey your father and mother. 6. Do not kill. 7. Keep your marriage promises. 8. Do not steal. 9. Do not lie. 10. Do not be greedy. Me! Me! Pick Me Every lesson calls for the teacher to select students to assist her. To promote fairness, write each child s name on a seashell. Place these shells in a child s plastic sand bucket; place the bucket on the floor in front of the beach wall. When the text calls for a child to be selected, draw a shell from the bucket. Place that shell at the base of the treasure chest. When all the shells 5

have been drawn, return them to the bucket and start over. At the close of each session, return all shells so that you start over each week. Special Memory Passage Ten Commandments (condensed) Treasure Chests As your class learns the Ten Commandments, they will receive each commandment to place in a treasure chest. Small gift boxes make the best individual treasure chests and can be purchased at dollar stores. Styrofoam containers work well, too. Always have extras for visitors. Names go on the bottom before the artwork begins. The first Sunday the children decorate their treasure chests. Provide buttons, sequins, glitter glue, fake jewels, and stickers. Do not use hot glue in this project, but instead provide several small bottles of tacky glue (available at craft stores); this will work better than glue sticks. Do not decorate the bottom of the chests. Using the master art in the resource packet, make a copy of the commandments for each child. During weeks 2-11 the children will learn one commandment; each week you will distribute the correct picture, let the child color it, roll it into a scroll, and secure it with a small ponytail band (available in hair accessories). He then adds it to his treasure chest. If your schedule does not allow time for this each week, the first week send home a treasure chest with each child (he need not decorate it). Each week thereafter, provide a copy of a commandment for him to color at home and place in his treasure chest. If he can say his commandment the following Sunday, reward him with a small prize. Kids in Missions The mission focus for the summer quarter is our home missionaries. These families may not travel thousands of miles across an ocean to take the gospel to the lost, but their burden is the same as a foreign missionary. Their goal in life is to go and teach all nations, just as the Master commanded. Their nation. Their home front. Their community. Your community. Download the Kids in Missions newsletter from the website for ideas on focusing on home missions this quarter. Mount the map of North America on the wall. It is suggested that you adopt a home missionary from your district. The children can pray, create cards, give offerings, and perhaps visit the home missionary. Each month a lesson will give suggestions for remembering the home missionary. We encourage you to remember them in prayer each week. 6
