1 SUPPLY LIST: WORKING MAGIC ON PAPER & FABRIC Miriam The Montclair Art Museum, Winter 2015 To bring to all classes: Apron and/or old clothes; gloves; notebook and pen (I will be giving hand-outs for each class, so you can take notes on the hand-outs and/or in a notebook); optional: hair dryer to speed up drying; dust mask. Fabric scissors could be purchased but I will have some on hand. Always bring regular scissors for paper although they are available in the studio. For all supplies, I would suggest that you buy the cheapest kind unless I specify a particular brand. If you take to a certain medium, you can always get a more expensive kind later, but when you are experimenting, it makes more sense to spend as little as possible. At the local dollar store, I found plastic placemats that are very useful in removing work from the table to the drying rack, so please pick up 5-10 of those mats. Almost all of the supplies can be purchased at Jerry s in West Orange. There is also Dick Blick s, Michael s, A.C. Moore, and I ve Got a Notion, which recently moved from Montclair to Bloomfield Avenue in Verona, also very close to the museum.

2 Please note that there is a $45.00 materials fee, as I will be providing many materials for all of the classes. The supplies I am asking you to bring are those that you are likely to have at home already and/or those I anticipate you will use again. Please bring this fee in cash to the first class. PLEASE BE ON TIME TO CLASS, as I start the demos at 7:00 p.m. Since I want you to have as much work time as possible, it is imperative that you are in class to see the demo. If you cannot make the class, please me the day before at miriamjacobs920@gmail.com or call or text me on my cell phone (973) CLASS 1 - JANUARY 13: Traditional Marbling (No need to bring anything special except as outlined above) Teacher will bring: Dyes Cookie sheets Jars Marbling tools (rakes and combs) Paper especially prepared for marbling Size mixture (carrageenan) Chopsticks Inkjet paper Ox-gall Paper prepped with alum Fabric prepped with alum CLASS 2 - JANUARY 20: Alternative Marbling Natural or synthetic fabric cut into pieces that can fit into a standard cookie sheet (no more than 10 pieces)

3 Teacher will bring: Scrapers Dyes Rice paper Plexiglass plates Chopsticks Plastic placemats Shaving cream Fabric CLASS 3 - JANUARY 27: Pole-wrapped Shibori PVC pipe about three feet high (go to Home Depot or other hardware store diameter should be at least three inches) Strong string/rubber bands (optional: three different thicknesses of string) Several small or one large container with tight-fitting lid and plastic bags that these containers can sit in, or some kind of plastic tub the containers can sit in Optional: cotton T-shirt wash in HOT water in the machine, or if you buy it from Dharma, get a shirt that is already prepared for dyeing Teacher will bring: Indigo Large bucket String and rubber bands Masking tape Stirring stick Polyester fabric Sharpie marker Small objects that can be immersed in water like glass or plastic marbles Cotton

4 CLASS 4 - FEBRUARY 3: Carving One s Own Stamps and Eric Carle Papers Drawing paper (inexpensive) Various size paintbrushes Exacto knife and a few extra blades OR linoleum block printing carving tools (wood carving tools are OK as well, however the only tool I use to carve blocks is an exacto knife) Pink Speedball s Speedy-Carve (carving material do not buy the tan or blue material) or you can buy a few square or rectangular erasers (do not get gum erasers or kneaded erasers) Optional: images you may want to carve (should be bold, graphic images, not fine details) (I will have plenty of images to carve so don t worry if you don t bring anything) Teacher will bring: Pencil Piece of felt or yoga mat or an old mouse pad Tracing paper Brayers Plexiglass plates Ink pads Exacto knife and blades Carving material Images Embossing powder Heat gun Metal spoon Pedicure spacers or other shaped items from dollar store Steel wool Swimming noodles Water color palettes or dixie cups - anything to put paint in White tissue paper Stamps

5 Brushes Texture-producing items Kosher salt Tempera/Folk Art paint A few sheets of regular drawing paper to glue Eric Carle papers on to Elmer's or Modge Podge or Matte Medium Heat gun CLASS 5 - FEBRUARY 10: Bleaching/Batiking Paper & Fabric Canson paper it s a high quality construction paper that is sold loosely (not in pads) and comes in gorgeous colors get about six different colors of the small sheets (about 5 x 7 ) Other students have tried various other kinds of paper, some of which have worked and some of which have not please feel free to bring in whatever kind of paper you would like but understand that there is no promise other kinds will respond to the bleach Leaves from outside (if possible) Old brushes, various shapes and sizes bring brushes that are cheap and/or old, as once they have wax on them, you will not be able to use them again for anything other than batik; the bleach may destroy your brushes depending on what the bristles are made of) Spritzer and/or old toothbrush Dyes Dye-na-Flow and Procion cold water dyes Newspaper or newsprint (to remove wax) Store-bought and/or hand-carved stamps and stencils Small bottle bleach (get a strong bleach) Djanting tools Massa paper a few sheets Yoga mat or felt or mouse pad Rag or paper towels

6 Make-up sponges Stenciling sponges and stenciling brushes (flat on the bottom) Cotton or other natural fabrics that are solid colors; you may want to get two or three small swatches of fabric that have a print on them as well I have purchased solid color dishcloths at the local dollar store, and they have worked beautifully Iron/ironing board Copper stamps Jars Electric frying pan Wax/paraffin CLASS 6 - FEBRUARY 17: Ice Cube Dyeing/Spray Paint Bag of ice Deep plastic bucket to hold entire bag of ice Krylon spray paint get three colors Stencils store-bought and/or hand-made (or make your own in class either from cardboard or but stencil blanks if you do this, bring an exacto knife, blades, cutting board) Optional: Cotton T-shirt(s) and plastic rack that fits inside of bucket Dharma Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes Cotton Stencils CLASS 7 - FEBRUARY 24: Gouache Resist and CitraSolv Fun A few tubes of gouache paint/palette of some kind to put paint on Watercolor paper (any size) Citra Solv (at Whole Foods or Jerry s or a health food store) Stencils (optional) Gloves in a Bottle Moisturizer (optional) Two or three images printed on a laser printer that you will want

7 to transfer onto cloth Black India ink (small bottle) Spoons Brushes National Geographic magazines from 1970 and on Cloth to put image transfer onto CLASS 8 - MARCH 3: Tyvek and Collaging Note: Please bring in everything that you did in all of the previous classes. Not only will it be fun for everyone to see the work, but I am going to encourage you to use the work to make collages. You may also bring to class any other work that you have done on your own and/or in other classes. You could also bring in pieces of fabric, glitter, seed beads, feathers, string, anything you might want to add to your work. Heat gun Various acrylic/folk art paints and/or alcohol inks/metallic paints whatever you have if you need to buy anything, get the cheapest stuff Matte medium or Elmer s glue or Modge Podge Bristol board or heavy drawing paper or even cardboard something to put your collage on Tyvek WonderUnder Iron/ironing board Everything the students are bringing
