When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route they meet a Scarecrow that needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West to earn his help.
* Re-enact a scene from the musical * Perform a monologue from the musical * Perform a song from the musical * Create a puppet of the Scarecrow * Create a costume piece for Tinman or the Wicked Witch * Research/Power Point Project exploring scientific, historical, and/or mathematical concepts found in the musical * Construct a timeline of the author s life * Construct a timeline of Dorothy s journey * Re-create a set
SCARECROW Materials Needed: Old button down shirt and a pair of pants Piece of rope approximately 3 yards long Pair of Old Glove Safety Pins Newspaper Pieces of straw Instructions: Step 1 Stuff the pants Tie off an old pair of pants at the bottom of each leg with twine. Stuff the pants with newspaper until they're firm and full. Step 3 Stuff the shirt Leaving the shirt unbuttoned, begin to tuck it into the pants. Before you tuck the back of the shirt in, run your stick up the back of the shirt, leaving at least a foot exposed at the top of the shirt. Safety pin the shirt to the pants from the inside around the waist. Stuff the chest, buttoning the shirt as you go, until the body is full. Step 4 Fill and pin gloves Fill the gardening gloves with newspaper, tie them off, and pin them to the sleeves. Step 5 Add the Face Print the scarecrow face on the next page. Glue it to a piece of cardboard. Color then cut it out and tape or glue it to the stick Step 6 Add finishing touches Decorate with pieces of hay by sticking them out the neck, hands, and feet of the scarecrow

THE TIN MAN S BODY Materials Needed: * Cardboard box big enough to fit over your shoulders, chest and torso * Silver spray paint * Red and black paint or markers * Glue or stapler Step 1: Find a big sturdy cardboard box. Cut a hole at the top of the box big enough for your head. Cut out a hole on both sides of the box for your arms. Step 2: In a highly ventilated area, spray paint these pieces silver. Let dry for least 8 hours Step 3: From the cardboard scraps, cut out a heart. For the clock, cut out a circle that will fit in the center of the heart. Paint the heart red and the circle white. Once dried, use black paint or a permanent marker to draw the 2 hands of a clock. Glue or staple the heart onto the left side of the chest. THE WICKED WITCH S HAT Materials Needed: * Newspaper * Cardboard * Black Paint * Paint Brush * Tape * Scissors Step 1 Roll 8-10 sheets of newspaper so that they make the shape of a cone. This will be the point of your hat, so try to envision that when you are making it. You might want to even try placing it on your head to make sure it fits. Step 2 Tape this cone of newspaper together so it can maintain its shape. Step 3 Cut a circle big enough to be the base of the hat from your cardboard. Place the cone on the cardboard and trace around the base of the cone. Draw another circle 4 or 5 inches from this circle and this second circle will be your hat's brim. Step 4 Cut out the first circle you drew (the one you traced) and squeeze your cone into this hole. On the inside, secure the two pieces together with tape. Step 5 Paint the whole hat black with whatever decoration you want and you're ready to go!
1. RE-ENACT a scene from the musical. You can do this with a partner or small group 2. SING! Choose a song from the musical, prepare and sing it for the class or you can video performance and it to Mrs. Klipa at eklipa@rhmail.org 3. MEMORIZE one of the following monologues and perform it for the class. You can also video your performance and it to Mrs. Klipa at eklipa@rhmail.org Wicked Witch of the West: Next time I enslave a whole nation, I must check out there intelligence first. Nikko, Nikko! Where is the comm ander of my aerobatic apes? There you are. I have an important task for you. My enemies are about to enter the Haunted Forest. I want you to rouse your men and snatch the sickening little girl and her equally nauseating little dog. Exhausted? What do you mean you're exhausted? Alright, alright. I'll conjure up a spell to take the fight out of her. Now which of my creepy crawlie creations shall I send to plague her? The flibbertygibbet? No! The fly by night? No! Aha! I have it! The jitterbug! Well may you gibber. There is no more infectious bug in my book of spells. Once bitten, they can never stop dancing till they drop! And when they do, you shall there be to scoop up the little brat and the little brute and bring them both to me! Now go! Do my bidding! Fly, fly, fly! Soon those darling little slippers will grace my dainty feet... I wonder if the winkies do shoe repair? Dorothy: But it wasn't a dream. It was a place. And you and you and you...and you were there. But you couldn't have been could you? No, Aunt Em, this was a real truly live place and I remember some of it wasn't very nice, but most of it was beautiful--but just the same all I kept saying to everybody was "I want to go home," and they sent me home! Doesn't anybody believe me? But anyway, Toto, we're home! Home. And this is my room, and you're all here and I'm not going to leave here ever, ever again. Because I love you all. And... Oh Auntie Em! There's no place like home! Lion: Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the "ape" in apricot? What have they got that I ain't got?
Who was L. Frank Baum? Research him and present your findings in a power point presentation In student pairs, role play Dorothy and a reporter. Write an interview with Dorothy and film it as if you were a real reporter. Send the finished project to Mrs. Klipa at eklipa@rhmail.org Dorothy and Oz return to Kansas the same way Oz arrived; a hot air balloon. Research what makes a hot-air balloon work and present it to the class via a power point When the Wizard bestows the honorary degree of thinkology upon the scarecrow, the scarecrow states his version of the mathematical concept Pythagorean Theorem. Present in power point form the Pythagorean Theorem and discover if the scarecrow s statement of definition was correct or incorrect. If incorrect, point out where he went wrong. Dorothy runs away from her home in Kansas and ends up in the Land of Oz. Create a power point and present facts about the state of Kansas. Explore at least 5 facts about the state and detail each in your power point presentation. * ALL POWER POINT PRESENTATIONS TO MRS. KLIPA at Eklipa@rhmail.org
Create a yellow brick timeline of Baum's life and the creation of the Oz books. Your timeline must be presented so that it s at least 3 feet long! Create a yellow brick timeline of Dorothy s journey from Kansas to OZ and back to Kansas. Your timeline must be presented so that it s at least 3 feet long!
