MYTHS, LEGENDS AND FOLK TALES THE HERO S JOURNEY WHAT IS THE HERO S JOURNEY? The Hero s Journey is a recurring pattern of stages many heroes undergo over the course of their stories Jo s eph Campbell, an American writer, discovered this cycle after res earching stories from around the world He found recurring patterns in a variety of works- monomyth STEPS IN THE HERO S JOURNEY 1
8/13/16 EXAMPLE OF THE HERO S JOURNEY According to Campbell, Hero s are all very similar H ero's Journey Ted Talk s toryboard 2
THE ORDINARY WORLD Heroes exist in a world is considered ordinary or u nevent fu l by t h ose wh o live there. The Wizard of Oz: Dorothy in Kansas Star Wars: Luke Skywalker on Tatooine The Lion King: Simba at Pride Rock Quest: This is the journey which the Hero has set out on. Task: This is the task that the hero must accomplish in order to succeed at the quest. THE CALL TO ADVENTURE For heroes to begin their journeys, they must be called away from the ordinary world. Fantastic quests don t happen in everyday life. Heroes must be removed from their typical environment. Often starts with an event The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The tornado Pirates of the Caribbean- Star Wars: R2D2 s cryptic message REFUSAL OF THE QUEST There s a reason why the powers-that-be have chosen a particular hero. During the Call to Adventure heroes are given a task or quest which only they can complete. Star Wars: Luke refuses the quest until he learns his aunt and uncle are dead The Lion King: Simba refuses to return to Pride Rock and accept his destiny 3
MENTORS/HELPERS Every hero needs a helper, much like every superhero needs a sidekick. The Wizard of Oz: The Tin Woodsman, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion The Lion King: Timoneand Pumba Many Hero s have supernatural helpers/aids SUPERNATURAL AID Supernatural doesn t have to mean magical. Supernatural simply means above the laws of nature. Heroes are almost always started on their journey by a character who has mastered the laws of the outside world and come back to bestow this wisdom upon them. This supernatural character often gives them the means to complete the qu est. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi/Lightsaber Cinderella: Fairy Godmother/Glass Slippers The Wizard of Oz: Witch Glenda/Ruby Slippers Dis honor on your c ow CROSSING THE THRESHOLD As they embark on their journey, the heroes enter a world they have never experienced before. Very often it is filled with supernatural creatures, breathtaking sights, and the constant threat of death. The Wizard of Oz: Dorothy must learn the rules of Oz The Lion King- Simba learns to relax and eat bugs (Hakuna Matata!) 4
TESTS, ALLIES, ENEMIES The heroes progress through a series of tasks/tests-a set of obstacles that make them stronger, preparing them for the Supreme Obstacle. The Wizard of Oz- Flying Monkeys, Poppy Field Star Wars- Jedi Training The Hero prepares to battle their enemy Star Wars-Darth Vader The Wizard of Oz- The Wicked Witch I'll make a man out of you Mulan Learns to be a man to fight in the army THE APPROACH/ THE ORDEAL The Approach- The point of no return. The Hero is about to face the ultimate test for successful completion of the quest Supreme Ordeal- The final battle, the showdown, the last hurrah.. Star Wars-Blowing up the Death Star The Lion King-Fighting Scar THE REWARD AND THE ROAD BACK/RETURN HOME Typically, there is a reward given to heroes for passing the Supreme Ordeal. It could be a kingdom. It could be the hand of a beautiful princess. It could be the Holy Grail. Whatever it is, it is a reward for the heroes endurance and strength. After the heroes complete the Supreme Ordeal and have the reward firmly in hand, all that is left is for them to return home. Just because the majority of the adventure has passed doesn t mean that the ro a d ba ck will be smooth sailing 5
ATONEMENT/RETURN-MASTER OF TWO WORLDS Success on the heroes quest is life-changing, for them and often for many others. By achieving victory, they have changed or preserved their original world. The heroes have also grown in spirit and strength. The Quest has been successfully completed The Wizard of Oz: Dorothy rids Oz of the Wicked Witch and returns to Kansas Percy Jackson gets the Lightening Bolt to Zeus and prevents a war, securing his mothers rescue as well Circle Story- ends where it starts MAIN IDEAS Monomyth- recurring patterns. Mono=one Journey- can be found in literature and movies Overview of Steps- ordinary world, call to action, trials, friends and enemies, pass a t est, ret u rn h ome t o a bet t er fu t u re Vocabulary- Qu est, T ask, Circle Story 6
