2014 Project Undercover This year we are once again challenging the Service Units to collect 4% above their total from Each Service Unit that reaches the goal will be placed in a drawing for a FREE Community Camping weekend courtesy of Project Undercover. The contest starts in October and will go to Friday, December 13 th when you will need to submit the total of items collected (not the number of packages) The winner will be announced by Friday, December 20 th. Please submit your totals to Jeanne Rogers at jrogers@gsri.org or ext 1409 We will also need a First Pitcher for the Socks for Sox game that will be in April, day and time to be announced.
Here Comes Project Undercover! Project Undercover serves to help the 40,000 children living below the poverty level in RI and its surrounding communities by collecting and distributing underclothing to needy children in emergency situations. New PROJECT UNDERCOVER Patch Activities Project Undercover is a service learning activity for girls. The service-learning approach contains three components: Background research that helps children understand the nature of the problem, its possible causes, and its effect on people in the community. Execution of a project that addresses a specific community need. Reflection and evaluation that enable children to examine what they learned from the service experience and the impact the project had on the community. The activities contained in this patch program are outlined with the service-learning approach. We offer activities that will help children gain a deeper understanding of the issue of childhood poverty, as well as a variety of suggestions to help them reflect on their service experience. The 2013 Project Undercover Patch activities are listed by age-level on the following pages. Action is the key to success for this project! Remember the goal! Collect 5 packages of new underwear, socks or diapers per girl. DAISY ACTIVITIES 2) Make bookmarks with the slogan Please donate new diapers, socks and underwear for children in need. Thank You, Girl Scouts of R.I., Inc. Leave them beside your collection box for promotion. Or distribute them to you local libraries. Materials List: Cardstock, Instructions: Cut cardstock to the size of bookmark the girls will make. Cut out pictures to fit on the bookmark. Glue the pictures to the top of the bookmark. (You can write the words, or print them from a computer. Written by a child looks best. Hints: You may laminate these so they will last longer using clear contact type paper) 3) Create a Project Undercover Poster: Using craft materials that the girls have chosen, create posters and place them in a school, bank, library, house of worship or local business. 4) Carry out a collection project.
Brownie Activities 2) Bean Bag Pal Using old socks make your self some beanbags and have fun with the game below. What You Need: old clean sock, split peas, dried beans or rice, yarn or ribbon, permanent markers (needle, optional) How To Make It: Take your sock, and fill it up to the heal with beans, peas or rice. Tie it above the heel with your yarn, or ribbon. Now, with your permanent marker, draw a face, or a character. If you want, use a needle and yarn to stitch a face on. You're done! Now use your bean bag to play. 3) Fancy, colorful socks - Nifty socks are a wonderful gift for kids of all ages. This is a terrific way to decorate socks and have fun! What you need: Light colored socks, Fabric paint, Beads and buttons, embroidery floss and needle What to do: With a pencil lightly draw where any beads, buttons and painted designs should be. All these should be above the ankle point of the sock. Sew any buttons and/or beads onto the socks first. Be creative- small pearl beads would be lovely for the cuff of socks. Embroidery floss is a wonderful item to use for decorating socks. Lastly, fabric paint can be used. Look at the directions on the paint's package for ideas on how to use the paint tip creatively. Wait 24 hours, for the paint to dry, before wearing socks. Make a pair for yourself and a pair for Project Undercover! 4) Prepare a Collage: Investigate the needs of children by researching articles in newspapers, magazines or on the Internet. Using pictures and words from old magazines make a collage and display it with your Project Undercover box. 5) Carry out a collection project. Junior Activities 3) Easy to Make Sock Puppets - Make some sock puppets and create a play/show for younger girls that emphasizes the importance of Project Undercover. These puppets are so cheap and easy to make. You can add all kinds of features to make an endless array of puppets. Save your old socks and socks with no mates or look for used socks and accessories in second hand stores.
What you will need: Old socks, hot melt glue gun, pink or red felt, cardboard from cereal box or thicker card board, chalk, scissors and paper, googly eyes, and anything else you would like to add. What to do: a. Cut out a mouth pattern from cardboard such as cardboard from a cereal box or cardboard that is a little thicker. Fold the mouthpiece in half. b. Insert the folded mouthpiece into the sock so that the curved ends are facing the toe end of the sock. Place your hand in the sock as shown in Picture A so that it is comfortable. Mark on the sock with chalk 1/2" beyond the end of the mouthpiece. Cut off the end of the sock where marked. c. Remove your hand and flatten out the sock so that the heal of the sock is on top. Cut away the extra sock material around the rounded part of the cardboard mouthpiece 1/2" from the edge. See Picture B. d. Fold open the toe end of the sock and the cardboard mouthpiece. The mouthpiece should lay on top of the sock with the top toe end of the sock folded up. See Picture C. Place a drop of hot melt glue in the center of the lower edge of the mouthpiece. Shown in picture C with an X. Pull the edge of the sock material over the edge of the cardboard piece and press it in place being careful not to burn yourself. See Picture D. Place another dot of glue on the top edge of the mouthpiece and pull the edge of the sock over the mouthpiece and press down. Place glue all the way around the edge of the mouthpiece a little bit at a time pulling the sock material over the mouthpiece of pressing it down as you go. e. Cut another mouthpiece from pink or red felt for the mouth. Cut it to fit over the cardboard mouthpiece and cover the edge just a little. Glue it down. Cut out a tongue piece and glue it inside the mouth. To add other features stuff the sock puppet with scrap material to make the puppet firm. Glue on ears, eyes, teeth, and other features. 3. Underwear Games Have a troop/group meeting and play some of the following games. Underwearball - Stuff a pair of printed briefs and sew the openings shut. Play basketball or soccer with the underwearball. Relay race - Two teams line up they must jump into a circle wearing huge t-shirt and socks. Undress and tag the next person. Next person puts the shirt and socks on, removes them, etc. First team completed wins. Or, Make a simple Pin the Underwear on Captain Underpants game. 4. Neighborhood Collection Decorate paper shopping bags and drop off in a door-to-door campaign. Idea: deliver bags with a Project Undercover flyer on one Saturday, pick up items on the next Saturday. 5. Personal Collection Set up an Undercover collection box outside a large department store. Give customers a Reminder coupon as they enter a store where they can purchase underwear. Girls should be present and visible, available to accept donations as customers are leaving. 6. Collection Project Carry out a collection project. Choose one of the above (#7 or #8) or develop your own idea. Cadette, Senior & Ambassador Activities 1) Designer Underwear! Express your one-of-a-kind creativity by designing underwear! Start with a child s white t-shirt. Use stencils, stamps, brushes and fabric paint to create funny monsters, silly insects or whatever you desire! Make sure to use only non-toxic paint. You can also head to the fabric store and pick out rick-rack and ribbon to sew around the edges. Do not embellish with rhinestones, beads, or anything that can come off and become a choking hazard. Want to try something more indepth and delicate or on a smaller piece? Get yourself a sewing needle, embroidery floss and a book of embroidery stitches from the library. Good design ideas include; ducks or bears, nice words, snowflakes or stars. Place individual items in zipper-lock bags and donate them to Project Undercover! 2) Underwear Party Hold a Pajama Party for your friends (they don t have to be Girl Scouts). In the invitation describe Project Undercover and ask the participants to bring 1-2 items that are needed, along with a piece of clothing in their size (shirt, socks, underwear, etc.). At the party, thank everyone for their donations, then set out fabric paints, stamps, beads, rhinestones,
ribbons, scissors, needles and thread, and more for them to embellish their clothing. At the end you can hang the items up for display (or do a fashion show) before taking them home. 3) Team Player Get your team involved! Do you play soccer, hockey or another sport? Get the team on-board with Project Undercover by talking to them and asking for donations at the next game or practice. 4) Write Stuff Write and submit an article to your school paper about your work with Project Undercover and how people can help. Include photos if possible. 5) Show Your Support Contact a local shelter, food bank or welfare department to ask about their particular needs. Develop a plan to help them meet this need. Visit the Rhode Island Donation Exchange Program (RIDEP) warehouse to find out how they serve the community. (Call first to make an appointment). Ask what you and your troop can do to help. 6) Neighborhood Collection Decorate paper shopping bags and drop off in a door-to-door campaign. Idea: deliver bags with a Project Undercover flyer on one Saturday, pick up items on the next Saturday. 7) Collection Project- Carry out a collection project. Chose one of the above or develop your own idea!
