He has a shell and will never go to ring the bell. His family lives in a wishing well. My Case tractor. (By Chris Starke) The case is as strong as an Angry Ox. It is full of speed and sweet Diesel. I drive the tractor around my farm. I get the shivers when I start it. Then I drive it until I am sick. My doll (Charlotte van der Westhuizen) My doll is like a ghost. She just lies on my bed. She always creep me out. She often just looks at me. She annoys me a lot. 3

5 Skool fees for 2017 Please find a summary of the 2017 school fee structure for Darling College. Thank you very much to the parents for attending the AGM on 20 October. Your input was appreciated and it shows your interest in the future of the school Fees. (In order to keep bank charges down parents are requested to make use of EFT facilities.) The R200 application fee remains unchanged. The once-off entry fee of R2500 also remains unchanged. This fee is levied for all students entering the school between Gr 1 and 7. The fee is not applicable to Gr R and RR students. Once a student moves from the pre-school to Gr 1 the entry fee becomes applicable. As from the beginning of 2017 a R600 development levy will be payable by all Gr R and RR students. This fee is payable at the beginning of each year. The annual development levy for Gr 1 7 students amounts to R1400. This fee is payable at the beginning of each year. From the beginning of 2017 a 10% discount will be available for a second child in a family that attends Darling College. If parents want to make use of this discount they are requested to do so by writing a letter to the Governing Body requesting to make use of the discount. Parents who are already of financial assistance will not qualify for the second child discount. Monthly fees Gr RR R = Gr 1 7 = 950 per month for 12 months payable on or before the 7 th of each month. R2385 per month for 12 months payable on or before the 7 th of each month. The Governing Body would like to welcome two new members. Both Charmaine du Toit and Marchell Kalumpie were elected to the portfolio of fundraising. We wish then all the best. 6 Skoolfooie Vir 2017 Vervolgens n opsomming van die begroting met fokus ofpskoolfooie vir die 2017 akademiese jaar van Darling Kollege. Baie dankie aan die ouers wat die algemene jaarvergadering op 20 Oktober bygewoon het, jul insette en vrae rakende die 2017 begroting toon jul belangstelling in die skool se toekoms. Fooie vir 2017 (Om bankfooie lag te hou, word ouers versoek om van die EFT fasiliteite gebruik te maak.) Aansoekfooi van R200 per kind bly onveranderd. Eenmalige intreefooi van R2500 bly ook onveranderd. Die fooi is betaalbaar vir enige leerder, van Gr 1 tot Gr 7 wat by die skool sou aanslit. Die fooi word nie van pre-primêre leerders verlang nie. Sodra n leerder van die pre-primêre eenheid na Gr 1 beweeg word die intreefooi gehef. Vanaf 2017 sal n onwikkelingsfooi van R600 van alle leerders in die pre-primêre eenheid gehef word. Die fooi is betaalbaar aan die begin van elke jaar. Die jaarlikse ontwikkelingsfooi vir alle leerders van Gr 1 7 is R1400 en is betaalbaar aan die begin van die jaar. Die beheerliggaam verwelkom ook twee nuwe lede, Charmaine du Toit en Marchell Kalumpie. Beide Charmaine en Marchell sal in die portefeulje Fondsinsameling dien. Ons wens hulle alle sterkte toe. 7 How does it work? 1. Find a shoe box We all have shoeboxes around the house or know someone who will kindly give us one. Shoe stores usually have empty boxes to give away. Boxes larger than MEDIUM (20x34x11cm) size might not be accepted. Decorated medium sized plastic tubs are welcome too. 2. Decorate the shoe box Be creative! Instead of using conventional wrapping paper, decorate the box with drawings, paint, cut outs and stickers. If you choose to wrap the shoebox, please make sure that you wrap the lid separately so that it can be lifted off. By doing this, you are creating a unique Keepsake Box which the recipient child will use to store their treasures throughout the year. The beautiful decorations and printed name labels make the Shoeboxes easily identifiable and unique for future use. Do NOT wrap the individual items in the box. Label your box by printing and pasting the Santa Shoebox label which you have downloaded on the outside of the lid, in the top right hand corner. Add sticky tape to ensure the label remains in place and secure the lid to the box with an elastic band. 7

8 3. Fill the box with gifts Please remember that all items must be NEW and AGE-APPROPRIATE. All of the following items are required: Toothpaste Tooth brush Bar of soap Wash cloth An outfit of clothing Educational supplies Sweets A toy IMPORTANT notes about Shoebox contents: FOOD: Do NOT include tinned food, cakes or other perishable food Do NOT include anything containing nuts Place chocolate in a ziplock bag to prevent it from possibly melting onto the other contents of the Santa Shoebox MEDICINE: Do NOT include medicines or vitamins of any kind WAR RELATED ITEMS: Do NOT include toy guns or knives FRAGILE ITEMS: Do NOT include glass containers or mirrors LIQUIDS: All liquids, like cosmetics or blow bubbles, must be put into a ziplock plastic bag, so that the contents cannot leak out and spoil the Santa Shoebox. DANGEROUS ITEMS: Do NOT include any dangerous items such as sharp objects 8

9 ELECTRONICS: Please include batteries with battery-operated toys (please note these children cannot afford to replace the batteries once they are flat) or choose a non-batteryoperated alternative (preferred). LASTLY: Do NOT include anything of a political, religious or racial nature Remember to assess whether the contents of your shoebox are appropriate to the age of the recipient child. For example, don t give marbles to a 2-year old but give them to a child over the age of 6. Another example would be to give a razor to a teenager but not to a younger child. 4. Fine Print All gifts should be new and comply with the conditions listed above. Please make sure your gifts are age-appropriate and that you do not send any items which might be swallowed or mistaken for sweets. Should you inadvertently include any item that is not suitable, or might be regarded as dangerous for the intended child, we reserve the right to remove that item and use it for the benefit of the charity. Lastly, don t forget to drop your box off diarise the date now! 9

13 My mooi Vlooi Deur Tessa Douglas Vlooi is so mooi en is so klein soos n plooi. Hy s liefdevol en lief vir my ma se kooi. Swart en bruin hare en rol graag in die blare. Mooi blou oë en hou van die Karoo. Hy hou van speel, maar eet altyd te veel. Hy hou baie van bene en spring dan oor die stene. Hy s so mal soos n haas en maak altyd geraas. Soms maak hy my so kwaad, maar bly altyd my beste maat. Lulu, my hond Deur Jeandré Rademeyer Sy is grys, sy is mooi. Sy hou daarvan as ek die bal gooi. Sy is sag soos sy, so grys soos lood. Sy kom lê in my bed en op my skoot. Sy is die enigste Fransepoedel waarvan ek hou. Ek is lief daarvoor om haar in my arms te vou. Sy speel met my bababoetie se geel speelgoed, is baie gehoorsaam en baie soet. Sy is baie liefdevol en ek sal altyd lief vir haar wees. Al het sy vuil pote, sal sy my kind wees 13

15 Many people make the mistake of thinking that it is acceptable to just throw paper, plastic and metal away. Whose problem is it anyway if your piece of plastic kills an animal? Or if your Coke can lies on a waste land for many years to come? By not recycling we, as parents, are stealing the earth from our children. Having enough information regarding recycling can help us make better choices when it comes to recycling. Here are some facts about recycling What exactly is recycling? Recycling involves turning used materials that are labeled as recyclable over to your local waste facility designated in a disposal container as recyclable materials to be taken and reused as material for a new purpose. A recyclable product is turned back into a raw form that can be used to create a new and different product. Why recycling is important Some recycling facts More than 60% of the rubbish that ends up in trash bins can be recycled. Around 16% of the cost of a product is spent on its packaging which is completely wasted if not disposed of properly. 80% of a vehicle can be recycled. Aluminum cans can be recycled completely and put to use in a short time. Thousands of glass jars and bottles are thrown away everyday. Glass can be recycled 100% and reused. Glass products which end up in landfills do not decompose at all. It has been observed that 24 trees are cut down to make one ton of paper. Plastics, which can often be recycled, take around 500 years to decompose. One recycled tin can save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 70% less energy is utilized to recycle paper compared to making it from raw materials. Similarly when you recycle one glass bottle, it can save enough energy to power a personal computer for 25 minutes. 15
