The series have now sod over a miion copies in the UK and has been transated into 24 different anguages. The new book, The Dead, is pubished in September 2010 and is the second in The Enemy series. Charie is a successfu actor, comedian and writer for teevision and radio, and has been writing books for chidren since Charie has aways been a fan of horror. Whie at university, he studied gothic iterature and took a fim course on horror. After studying at the University of East Angia, Charie formed a band, The Higsons. He then became a decorator before turning to the word of teevision. His successes incude Saturday Live, the Harry Enfied Teevision Programme, The Sme of Reeves and Mortimer, Shooting Stars and the Fast Show. The activities provided in this resource focus on two Higson noves: The Enemy (2009); and Siverfin (2005), the first in the Young Bond series. They are designed to be fun, engaging, cross-curricuar activities which shoud enhance the chidren s enjoyment of the author s work. Give your paragraph to a friend and see if s/he can draw an accurate picture using your description try to use simies and metaphors to hep your friend get a cear image in his/her head! REFUGE The chidren in the nove are constanty seeking to find refuge from the grown-ups in Waitrose, down aeyways, in the Tower of London, in Buckingham Paace In groups, discuss what made a good refuge for the chidren in the nove. Ideas might incude: a good ook-out spot access to food and water good security somewhere to seep Imagine you are eft to fend for yourseves with a group of friends. Think of a buiding in your own viage, town or city which woud make a good refuge. Think about how you coud convert different parts of the buiding to suit your needs. Find out about how the character fet at that point in time, what thoughts were running through his/her head, how s/he fet about other characters, what s/he thinks wi happen in the future. 6 The Enemy Activities for Secondary (Leves 3-4) INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES Think about conventions of the horror genre. Look at the front and back covers of the nove and see how many of these are introduced. Amongst other aspects, you coud consider the foowing: iustrations (type, coours, stye) vocabuary (tite, burb, extracts, reviews) genera presentation (text font, tite, ayout) Listen to the extract from the nove at the foowing ink: Listening and Taking LIT 3-02a / LIT 3-09a / LIT 4-02a / LIT 4-09a LEADERSHIP Throughout the nove, different chidren act as eaders. Some ead the entire group, some ead the fighting party, some ead the security party and some take charge of ooking after the chidren. Work in groups to make a tabe ike the one beow, providing information about different eaders found in the nove. Aocate a character to each group. Work in groups to prepare an argument for why the character woud make the best eader of the chidren. Think about actions/events that the character has been invoved in, as we as persona characteristics. Hod a cass debate to see which character woud make the best eader. 7 MOVIE-MAKING Books are often made into fims. Discuss whether you think this book woud make a good fim. Is there a particuar scene you can envisage? Which parts woud be difficut to make into a movie? Choose a scene from the nove and change it from a narrative into a script. Think about using a range of adverbs such as nervousy, cautiousy, furiousy as stage directions in brackets before a character s speech. Work with a partner to discuss where these might be, for exampe the swimming poo scene, Sam escaping from the footba stadium or reguar street-fighting between the grown-ups and chidren. Listening and Taking LIT 3-02a / LIT 3-09a / LIT 4-02a / LIT 4-09a Tension is created in a number of different ways. Look for exampes of different toos used to create tension throughout the nove. Use the subheadings given in the mindmap (additiona resource 1) to hep, and compete the map using exampes from the text. 8 Siverfin Activities for Primary (Leve 2) INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES Foow the ink to ook at the information about the other books in the Young Bond series which one woud you most ike to read and why? Pay the different young Bond games at the foowing website: SUPERHEROES Lord Heebore is trying to create a race of superheroes that are strong and powerfu. Imagine you are trying to create a race of superheroes. Discuss with a partner which human quaities you woud give your heroes. Think about physica, socia and emotiona characteristics. If you coud give your superhero one superhuman characteristic what woud it be and why? Write a description and draw an iustration of your superhero, and then present it to the cass. Afterwards, chidren can visit each station to read and discuss ideas of peers. 9 TO TRUST OR NOT TO TRUST Hod a cass debate about whether or not to trust George Heebore. Think about the way he treats Bond as we as the way he himsef is treated by his father and his own troubed upbringing. Does he deserve the second chance that Bond gave him? Woud you have trusted him if you were in Bond s shoes? Design a kit of essentia toos which James Bond shoud keep with him at a times. Expain what each item is, why you think it woud be usefu and when/how you think it coud be used. Which woud you most ike to read next and why? Pay the different young Bond games at the foowing website: YOUNG HEROES The nove describes the adventures of the young James Bond foowing the success of the noves and fims about the adut James Bond. Try to identify different aspects of the young Bond which are precursors of the adut Bond. 10 Think about other famous adut heroes or egends such as Sherock Homes or Superman. Write a chapter about the character as a chid and an adventure that s/he goes on. Try to show the beginnings of some of the characteristics demonstrated by the adut version of the hero! GOOD V. EVIL Notions of good and evi and heroes and viains are expored in different ways throughout the nove. Compete the tabe beow to demonstrate the way in which George and Randoph Heebore are portrayed as evi through their beiefs, persona characteristics and actions.
