Ask: What is the vaue of 10 pennies? 10 Dispay 10 stacks of 10 pennies. Have chidren count by tens to find the vaue of 10 stacks of 10 pennies. 100 Expain that a one doar bi has the same vaue as 10 stacks of 10 pennies, or 100 pennies. Discuss with chidren how doar bis and coins are both usefu and why there is a need for both. Point out that it is easier to carry doar bis in a waet or pockets than to carry the same money amount in pennies. Remind chidren that 100 is the same as one doar. Write 100,, and one doar on the board. Have chidren write these as we, and discuss the reationship between them. Have chidren count to find the tota vaue of 10 dimes. Then ask them to count different sets of coins that equa 100, or one doar. See ELL Activity Guide for eveed activities. Have partners write the amounts in the sections of the spinner Partner A spins the pointer and shows that amount using coins. Then he or she finds how many more cents are needed to show one doar, and shows that amount separatey. Partner B checks to make sure the amounts have a sum of one doar. Say: 2 quarters and 5 dimes have a tota vaue of one doar. Materias pay coins (pennies, dimes) Make 10 stacks of 10 pennies. Count the stacks by tens, pointing to each stack as you count. How many cents are there in a? 100 There are 100 cents in one doar. So, 100 pennies are the same as one doar. How many cents are there in one dime? 10 Show a row of 10 dimes. As a group, count by tens to 100. How many cents are there in a? 100 So, 10 dimes are the same as one doar. Make a row of 9 dimes and a row of 10 pennies beow it. As a group, count by tens for the dimes. How many cents are there in 9 dimes? 90 As a group, count by ones for the pennies. How many cents are there in 10 pennies? 10 Then count the two rows of coins as a group. How many cents are there in a? 100 So, 9 dimes and 10 pennies are the same as one doar. FL29B
