Our collection includes many titles concerning Rosa Parks, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Selma to Montgomery March, and the Tuskegee Airmen to name a few. 3 Sunday, February 3pm the Movies (Global Classroom) In honor or Black History Month, we will be showing a new film relating to the ongoing struggle for Civil Rights in America: A young girl constantly switches between two worlds. The balance between these two worlds soon shifts and now she has to face the consequences. The girl has to decide whether to stand up for what s right or do nothing. What will she do? Williams Library Rosa Parks Ave Branch Monday, February 9am-5pm Rosa Parks Bus Tour Description: See a replica of the bus that was in use during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Wednesday, February 3pm Black Business, Present and Past Description: Gumptown Magazine and MCCPL will give a brief presentation on the historical importance of black owned businesses. Then we will open up discussion to panel guests who own and operate local black businesses about their current work and impact on black communities and any challenges and successes they have. Contact us to see what businesses are included, or if you would be interested in being added to the panel (availability may be limited). Heroes Like Me Competition We need heroes who look like everyone, including you! Too often we see heroes who don t look like us, whether we re a different body shape or have different abilities or a different color. Show us what you would look like as a hero. Prizes will be awarded by grade level. First prize for each category will receive a 12x24 poster of their entry and be included on a poster kept at the library to show how much we love our community heroes! Contest is open to pre-k through 12. Submissions must be flat for our scanner to accommodate the artwork. No glitter please! Entry forms will be available until end of day Friday, February 22, last day to accept entries will be Tuesday, February 26. We will judge on Thursday, February 28, and award prizes in March.

Her signature style consisted of board, mosaic-like patches of vibrant color in circles and stripes. Come explore the beauty and exuberance of her art by creating your own watercolor painting in her groundbreaking style. Thursday, February 4 pm Celebrating Annie Malone Description: Madam C. J. Walker is often credited as the first African American millionaire; however that honor actually belongs to Annie Malone, the woman who trained her. Come learn fun facts about her and her creations. We ll also recreate an invention and discuss patents. A Brief History of Black History Month Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of Negro History Week, the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black History Black History Month Theme The Association for the Study of African American Life and History s (ASALH) 2019 theme Black Migrations emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities. While inclusive of earlier centuries, this theme focuses especially on the twentieth century through today. Beginning in the early decades of the twentieth century, African American migration patterns included relocation from southern farms to southern cities; from the South to the Northeast, Midwest, and West; from the Caribbean to US cities as well as to migrant labor farms; and the emigration of noted African Americans to Africa and to European cities, such as Paris and London, after the end of World War I and World War II. Such migrations resulted in a more diverse and stratified interracial and intra-racial urban population amid a changing social milieu, such as the rise of the Garvey movement in New York, Detroit, and New Orleans; the emergence of both black industrial workers and black entrepreneurs; the growing number and variety of urban churches and new religions; new music forms like ragtime, blues, and jazz; white backlash as in the Red Summer of 1919; the blossoming of visual and literary arts, as in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Paris in the 1910s and 1920s. The theme Black Migrations equally lends itself to the exploration of the century s later decades from spatial and social perspectives, with attention to new African Americans because of the burgeoning African and Caribbean population in the US; Northern African Americans return to the South; racial suburbanization; inner-city hyperghettoization; health and environment; civil rights and protest activism; electoral politics; mass incarceration; and dynamic cultural production.
