I then stop myself and realize that I am almost done with my term as your state president; there is still so much to do in such little time. As I tour our glorious state; from peninsula to peninsula, one thing is common: The C.A.R. of Michigan are always smiling, laughing, helping others, and being wonderful citizens to this great country. All our members have supported both our national project and especially our state project The Restoration of the American Doughboy, Lest We Forget. It may sound like we have crossed the threshold of victory -- we have not. We are closing in on our goal; we only have a few months to finish our fundraising drive. I am still going to DAR and SAR events, meetings alike, and giving my presentation. I need all of you to continue to spread the word, The Doughboy needs YOU! This has been a momentous undertaking, for which we have strived, and for that I applaud every single M.S.C.A.R. member! I just returned from a highlight of my term, attending the Yorktown Celebration. I was humbled to represent our state at the festivities and spend time with members of the National Board in Yorktown. The celebration was the 235 anniversary of the victory of Yorktown: the first major coalition of the Americans and the French. Since then, a bond has been forged that has never been broken. I stood in the same place as our forefathers fought for liberties and freedom the world could not comprehend. How glorious it was 235 years later to hear Freedom s Thunder. Connor Jackson, National C.A.R. President s project went off without a hitch, and a payment of $25, was made to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown! We in Michigan are preparing for our own celebration: state conference, February 10th and 11 th. We have decided that we will have a pool and pizza party so it is going to be lit as the teenagers would say. More information can be found in this issue of the Wolverine. Please make your plans to attend a truly family fun event. For more information visit : Lest We Forget! Madden S. Brady

Page 2 A LETTER FROM THE SENIOR STATE PRESIDENT Members & Friends of C.A.R. - Who could ask for a more beautiful and colorful way to start fall 2016! The colors north, south, east and west truly reflects the beauty of Michigan. I know now why many of my ancestors (I have discovered) settled in western Michigan. My family and I recently established (with the help of a very lovely genealogist) our 1812 relatives. What an eye opener! It has created some excitement all around. One of the reasons to engage in C.A.R. is to discover the rich history and our own family histories/stories! Keep researching, I say, guaranteed to find interesting connections. Our DAR chapters are great resources to come and talk to your local societies. Speaking of our DAR and SAR Chapters, I am truly excited that many if not all of our C.A.R. Societies are doing joint meetings and programs at one or more of our sponsoring chapters. Senior Society Presidents, I do encourage every year reaching out in some way to those Chapter Regents and C.A.R. Liaisons to keep them informed of your activities. Ask to come and share a program or contest with them. Many times they are able to offer support to help societies. We all know time, talent, and treasure is at our finger tips. Our State President has brought you up to speed on his project and the count down to the State Conference will soon begin with this issue of the Wolverine. I urge you to attend any portion of the 84 th M.S.C.A.R. State Conference in support of the work our youth are doing. Active, enthusiastic senior and youth membership are sought. Registration information is available in this issue and has been made available electronically as well. Calendar Reminders: Wreaths Across America December 17 at Great Lakes National Cemetery State Conference February th in Bay City Thank you Laurie Huber Laurie Huber Senior State President RECORDING SECRETARY A friendly reminder: if you are looking for a program for your next society meeting, you should consider the National Recording Secretary s Contest. The objective is to learn how military service was recorded throughout American history. Your society can research the history contained in the War Rolls housed at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. Your society can do this from the comfort of home: Do some research and share at your next society meeting. You can enter your society s program in the National Contest! Good Luck and Happy Sleuthing! Moria Brady, State Recording Secretary

Page 8 MICHIGAN WAR DOG MEMORIAL Members of the Michigan Society Children of the American Revolution (M.S.C.A.R.) held a Dedication Ceremony at the Michigan War Dog Memorial in South Lyon, Michigan, Saturday, October 29 th at 2:00pm. Approximately 50 members, seniors, and guests shared in the unveiling of the National Society Children of the American Revolution insignia placed on the archway at the memorial. The M.S.C.A.R. State President s project, led by past State President Emma Huber, focused on the support and promotion of the Michigan War Dog Memorial. With the support of the untiring effort by Mr. Phil Weitlauf, the Executive Director of the memorial, Miss Huber gave numerous presentations and promotional materials during that year sharing the work that was being done at the memorial to honor our K9 Heroes. The C.A.R. raised $6,400 towards the memorial specifically for the building and installation of the archway that stands at the Path of Honor into the memorial. At the conclusion of the project, the state society sought and was approved for the placement of the national insignia at the memorial. This is the inaugural placement of the national C.A.R. insignia in Michigan. The memorial serves to recognize not only war dogs, but also K9 police and service dogs who work every day in our communities. The current State President Madden Brady served as the Master of Ceremonies with Emma Huber introducing dignitaries followed by our Guest speaker - Mr. Weitlauf. After a few comments by Past National office R. Mitch Huber, the State President and Honorary State President unveiled the plaque. War Dogs have served since World War I from helping to find wounded soldiers to bomb detection. War dogs have saved tens of thousands of lives over the course of their service to our men and women in the field. The M.S.C.A.R. extends appreciation to the Monguagon Chapter for donating the tokens, Mrs. Dawn Brady for assisting with invitation and program design and to past Honorary State President Patrick McInnis for playing taps for the ceremony. MERIT AWARD It is not too late to earn a merit award for your society. There are still four months left. Remember: EVERY society should apply even if it is for honorable mention. There are great things happening on each society in Michigan and we should spread the word. Moria Brady Committee Chair

Page 9 FREEDOM S THUNDER CELEBRATES YORKTOWN The 235 th celebration of the Victory at Yorktown was very well attended with both the State President and Recording Secretary Madden and Moria Brady along with the Senior State President, representing Michigan very well throughout the day s events. The traditional wreath laying occurred at site of Thomas Nelson marker one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. This was followed by the annual parade and parade of flags in front of the memorial. Despite one of the warmest days on record, the C.A.R. members enjoyed the festivities and a wonderful reception that afternoon. The National Society did a wonderful job as hosts for this year! M.S.C.A.R. ON THE MOVE!

Page 10 MICHIGAN SOCIETY C.A.R. WELCOMES USS DETROIT MEMBERSHIP REMINDER GROW YOUR SOCIETY Honorary State President and Past National Officer Mitch Huber, had the glorious honor of being with 99 other Michigan DAR to welcome the USS Detroit which was to be commissioned this past October 22 nd. The USS Detroit came into port on Friday, October 14 th where flags were waving to welcome the crew to a reception and numerous gifts from the generosity all over the state! Do you enjoy your society meetings? Have you told your cousins and friends? Have you shared your enthusiasm with your local SAR or DAR chapter? There are many places to find new members. If you need resources or more information, contact the Membership chair Natalia Johnson. Natalia Johnson Ki-Ka-Ma-Sung Society Age 17 LEWIS CASS SOCIETY NEWS Our members had a busy fall with C.A.R., and DAR events. Not to mention, all the fun that school brings with clubs, teams and the arts. We are making progress on our Merit Application and looking forward to State Conference in February! Society President, Moria Brady, with Service Dog trainer and service dogs at various stages in the program. A Lewis Cass member had the opportunity to page at the 116 th DAR State Conference. Here she is with a thank you gift from the DAR of MI Pages. Lewis Cass members attended the Fall Board Meeting and enjoyed the tour of the Michigan Military and Space Heroes Museum. CORRECTION The M.S.C.A.R. State Directory incorrectly identified this year s State Treasurer. Nicia Johnston is the State Treasurer. An updated directory will be provided in the next issue.

Page 11 LOCAL SOCIETY IS FOCUSED ON DRIVING HOME SUPPORT FOR THE KATIE DUNCAN The Mountain Schools program has been an important and FUN part of being involved with C.A.R. Kids are supporting kids through several different ways that can be easily done right at home. Collect Box Tops, old ink cartridges and purchasing items through the School stores, too! One society is driving home support for one school. The Elias Cady Society is working to gather support for the Katie Duncan School which is in and one of the DAR Mountain Schools. The members will be collecting box tops, toys, old ink cartridges, to send to the school over the next few months. Sponsoring chapters, friends, and members are being asked to bring all their items to the joint DAR/C.A.R. meeting January 9, Items will continue to be gathered through January 31 st and then sent to the school! Thank you in advance for all of your support. I encourage all of you to think of ways to participate and support our Mountain Schools. The website and contact information is located in the National Program Packet. Have fun! Olivia LeMarbe M.S.C.A.R. State Chairman, Mountain Schools Elias Cady Society MOSES PORTER REVOLUTARY WAR HERO HONORED Michigan Society C.A.R. along with members from the Mark & Henry Schell and Elias Cady Societies participated in the beautiful grave dedication ceremony honoring a Revolutionary war hero - Moses Porter. The Stony Creek and Louisa St. Clair Chapters were instrumental in site improvements and honoring Mr. Porter. The ceremony was followed by a reception in Metamora, Michigan. The society appreciates the opportunity being a part of such a wonder ceremony. KIDS HELPING KIDS COMMITTEE REPORT Kids Helping Kids is a great committee that allows us to help other kids. There are many ways to do this. An easy way is to support a mountain school with donations or items. A closer to home option is to participate in a coat drive for kids or take an angel off a sharing tree. Moria Brady, Chair
