But helping those who not only cannot help themselves, but also cannot in any way pay back your service, is truly following the Savior. I remember when I was 12 years old, I had an accident which caused me to lose sight in my left eye. After a quick surgery, I had to wear bandages over both of my eyes for two full weeks, leaving me sightless. I felt helpless, because I could not do anything on my own. My mom had to pick out my clothes, fix my food, and lead me around wherever we went. I had always appreciated my Mom, but now I felt truly grateful for her help when I needed it most. She was a busy single mom with seven kids, and probably didn t have the time to do all she did for me, but somehow she did, and I was truly blessed for it. Your selfless service on behalf of family members beyond the veil will bring eternal blessings for both you and them. I know it does not come without sacrifice, but it will bind you with our departed family members in more way than one. And the friendly and helpful support you provide patrons of the Family History Center will allow each patron to do the same for their family. 2 South Davis Family History Fair 2011 To The Rescue: The Blessings of Uniting Families The South Davis Family History Fair was held on Saturday, March 5th at Bountiful High School. It was a tremendous success, with some attendees stating it was The best fair ever! Approximately 1350 people attended the fair consisting of 100 classes on many subjects and proficiency levels. The keynote address was given by Dan Lawyer, former Product Manager for Family Search. He talked about the history of Family Search and where it is projected to go in the future. One of the many things he discussed was the change in thinking from My Family Tree to Our Family Tree. The networking of families to share and collaborate will be the wave of the future. The vendor hall was filled with many of the latest innovations in Family History and technology. Thank you to all who made this such a great success, including the High Counselors of the Twelve Sponsoring LDS Stakes, the Stake Presidency of the North Canyon Stake, the young men and young women of the North Canyon Stake who put together the lunches, David White, the Fair Committee Chairman and Kory Coleman his assistant, Leonard Plaizier and Joey Reyes for overseeing the technology, Terry Carlson for organizing the Vendors, the South Davis Family History Center Directors and staff and an army of volunteers that made the fair run smoothly. Thank you also to the many presenters who donated their time and expertise to help all who attended learn better ways to accomplish their family history. -2-

5 10 Best Web Sites for Death Records A Guide to Finding Death Records & Databases on the Internet Death records have been a great help to many genealogy & family history researchers, providing valuable information and clues to an ancestor s or relative s death. Over the last few years, many people & organizations have been publishing death record archives on the Internet. Some with thousands of records, others with millions. 2. Search death records by State - Many states have a web site where you can search for death certificates or information on a person in that state. 3. Online Grave Locations - there are many online grave location web sites and it s a good place to start. Online searchable death indexes, records & obituaries, a directory of online death records indexes listed by state includes indexes for obituaries, cemetery burials, and death certificates Find a Grave - 32 million grave records and counting. You can search cemeteries for graves and sometimes even luck out and find a picture of the grave. Volunteers are continuously adding new cemeteries and burials. Death Records often contain the following Genealogical information: Names of parents of the deceased Age and location of birth of the deceased Place of burial Name of spouse or other family member Place and date of death Exact cause of death Tip: Remember that many death certificates have incorrect information. Ask yourself: Who provided the information? How reliable is it? Keep an open mind and carefully note all discrepancies and the informant who provided the death information. 1. FamilySearch Record Search-FREE online genealogy site from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints includes digitized images of death certificates from Arizona ( ), Massachusetts ( ), Michigan ( ), North Carolina ( ), Ohio ( ), Philadelphia ( ), South Carolina ( ), Texas ( ) and Utah ( ). The site also offers a wealth of transcribed death records, funeral home records, burial records and funeral notices from places as diverse as West Virginia, Ontario, Mexico, Hungary and the Netherlands Utah Death Certificate Index - If your ancestors had died in Utah, find them in this searchable database of more than 250,000 death certificates, from 1904 to 1956, linked to images of the originals Ancestry.com -This popular genealogy site requires an annual subscription to access its records, but offers a wealth of documents and indexes from all over the world. Death records in its collection include everything from digitized death certificates, to current obituaries, to cemetery and funeral home records Social Security Death Records - You can find them in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). Through web sites like Ancestry.com, Footnotes.com researchers can access these records and request an application for copies of the death records. 8. Roots Web -Huge database of ancestry data. Be sure to check out the information on how to get started. Also offers many tools and resources in addition to information such as charts and forms for tracking your family tree. Also find related mailing lists and message boards.

GenealogyBank - This US-based subscription genealogy service provides access to more than 115 million U.S. obituaries and death records from the last 30+ years ( present) ProQuest Obituaries - Your library card could be the key to free access to this online collection of more than 10 million obituaries and death notices appearing in top U.S. national newspapers dating back to 1851, with full digital images from the actual paper. Especially if it is a recent death, you are likely to find a newspaper with the obituary in it. On The Bookshelf The Family History Center has a large number of books that were donated to the Center dealing with Genealogy & Family History.
