6 The Main Family History Library Located at 35 North West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, Utah Visited by an estimated 1,900+ patrons/day and is the largest genealogical library in the world Open to the general public at no charge Offer orientation and research classes

7 About: The Genealogical Society of Utah 4,500 Family History Centers worldwide operating in over 100 countries The great resources of the GSU collection are found in the Granite Mountain Record Vault or also known as the GMRV. The GMRV contains over 6.4 million worldwide microfilmed records which can form an important resource for your family history research.

8 GSU Main Library Records Collection Over 2.4 million rolls of microfilmed genealogical records 742,000 microfiche 310,000 books, serials, and other formats 4,500 periodicals 700 electronic resources The collection increases monthly by an average of 4,100 rolls of film, 700 books, and 16 electronic resources. A majority of the records contain information about persons who lived before 1930

10 British Isles Record Collection Contains: Over 241,000 rolls of microfilm Over 260,000 microfiche Over 50,000 books, serials, and other formats Over 4,500 published family histories (in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building) England Census records ; 1881 census on CD-ROM and the GSU website Civil registration indexes (including Wales) 1 July Parish registers or bishop's transcripts for the Church of England for most counties and many nonconformist registers Probate records for most pre-1858 ecclesiastical courts and the Principal Probate Registry from National Inventory to Documentary Sources in the United Kingdom

12 Other Key Resources: Computer Files Ancestral File database contains more than 36 million names that are organized into family groups and pedigrees. For coordination purposes the file also lists names and addresses of submitters. International Genealogical Index (IGI) database contains approximately 600 million names of deceased individuals. IGI lists vital information such as birth or marriage dates, and places. Many names in the index comes from vital records from the early 1500s to Others have been submitted by LDS members. Addendum to the IGI contains an additional 125 million names. Pedigree Resource File database contains over 80 million names that are linked into families. These are gedcom submissions that are made on-line at the familysearch.org website.

System (both software and hardware) driven to improve the output and throughput of the GMRV (Granite Mountain Record Vault*) to convert our microfilm collection to digital images *Granite Mountain Record Vault (GMRV) is where the Church s world-wide family history collection of records are stored

59 ScanStone Project 10 digital scanners which create digital ribbon images Images are scanned twice, prepared and audited Converted into image files, optimized and compressed Ribbons are then split into individual images and stored on servers

Some digital records may be accessible over the internet. 2. Goal is to digitize and make the images available on-line or create indexes through FamilySearch Indexing and make images available through partnerships with the original copyright holders.
