1 South Davis Family History Center 3350 South 100 East Bountiful, Utah (801) Hours of Operation Weekdays: Mon. thru Fri. 9 AM to 4 PM Evenings: Tues. thru Thurs. 7 PM to 9 PM Saturdays 10 AM -1 PM Closed Holidays JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2013 In his October 2012 General Conference address, Elder Richard G. Scott quoted from the words of President Howard W. Hunter, We must accomplish the priesthood temple ordinance work necessary for our own exaltation; then we must do the necessary work for those who did not have the opportunity to accept the gospel in life. Doing work for others is accomplished in two steps: first, by family history research to ascertain our progenitors; and second, by performing the temple ordinances to give them the same opportunities afforded to the living. Few fully realize the interrelationship that binds the destiny of the living with their responsibilities to those who have gone before. Elder Scott provided encouragement, example, and testimony of the importance of fulfilling our dual duties to seek after our ancestors and then perform the temple ordinances in their behalf. He concludes with his own challenge to every member of the Church. But what about you? Have you prayed about your own ancestors work? Set aside those things in your life that don t really matter. Decide to do something that will have eternal consequences. Begin now. I promise you that the Lord will help you find a way. And it will make you feel wonderful. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. My deepest gratitude and love goes out to those who are serving so faithfully in the Family History Center. You are providing the light that is the welcoming beacon to those who are looking for a place to come and perform their great work, and you also provide the glow that illuminates the path before them. You are the ministering angels through whom the glorious work of our Heavenly Father moves forward. May the year 2013 bring the Lord s richest blessings to you and those whom you love. Play around with these and see if you can t shake up the results you re getting. The great thing about searching is you can get wild and crazy, and wildcards are a great way to experiment on Ancestry.com: An asterisk * matches zero or more characters so Ann* matches Ann, Anne, Anna, Annabelle, etc. A question mark? matches one character so Ann? matches Anne or Anna. The first letter can now be a wildcard, although either the first or last character must be a non-wildcard character. Names must contain at least three non-wildcard characters. Try the wildcard as a first letter to capture cases where a flourish on the first letter may cause it to be mis-transcribed. -4-

5 CONSULTANT NEWS WELCOME We would like to welcome new consultants: Bob Peters from Woods Cross Stake. Judy Wimmer and Joy Christensen from Val Verda Stake A big thank you to Ed McPheeters who is leaving to accept a mission call with his wife to the Portland Oregon Mission to serve in the Visitors' Center. They will be entering the MTC the first of February. FAMILY HISTORY PATRONS & CONSULTANTS As most of you are aware we have been replacing our older and outdated Windows XP computers with new Windows 7 computers. Some have been upgraded and some have been replaced. We are trying to improve the speed, reliability and ease of use of the computers at our center. With the advent of the new hardware and software please be aware that no USER data is being preserved in the center. This means that when you bring your data to the center you should be prepared to take that data home with you and not expect that data will be in the center the next time that you visit. We have provided Flash drives at the center that can be purchased for a nominal price and if you need one please contact someone that works in the center. If you would like to have your information at the center without your bringing your Flash drive maybe you should try Dropbox or Google Drive. We are trying to make the center run as fast as possible and are trying to remove any function that reduces speed or availability. We have increased the speed of the internet to the center and are trying to provide those services that one will find in any of the larger centers around the valley. John D. Russell (IT Director) Using Dropbox To Share Photos And Genealogy With Family And Friends Online storage is popular with genealogists who want to keep and share their research. It allows users to store and access files online. Online storage is the ability to store files and data on a remote server that can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection. One of the limitations of trying to share photos with friends or family is the size limitations imposed by many servers. Who hasn't attached a photo to an and had a warning appear that the attachment was too large? Well, there are several ways around this problem. You could copy the photo to a CD and mail the CD to your relatives. But what if you want to share the photo with several relatives at once? This could mean making and mailing multiple copies of the photos. -5-

6 There is a solution. Using an online file transfer and storage program such as Dropbox.com. By opening an account with Dropbox.com, you get a free account with up to 2 Gigabytes (GB) of storage, enough to send dozens, if not hundreds of photos. You can also obtain additional free storage, up to 18GB by referring new users to the program. To begin using Dropbox.com, go to the website and sign up for a free account. com/ Be sure to record your login and password in a place where you can easily find it, if you forget. You must have an Internet connection for this program to work. When you install the Dropbox.com program on your computer's hard drive, it will create a Dropbox folder. You can put any kind of file in your Dropbox folder and it will be automatically stored online. To share items in your folder with others, it is a good idea to create a folder specifically for sharing, such as "Family Photos" or whatever. It is important to keep originals of your documents and photos in another place on your computer because once you have shared a file, someone receiving the file can drag the file out of the folder on Dropbox.com and the copy will disappear from Dropbox. To share, you put a copy of the photo or photos to be shared in the folder you create inside the Dropbox folder and then you go to the Dropbox.com website and login. Usually, the program will put an icon on your computer to allow you to go directly to the website. Your new folder with the photos should appear on your list of files. You then click on the sharing icon, choose the folder you want to share and invite participants by adding their addresses to a list and then send the invitation. If you want to share the photos or files with more than one person, remember that the files need to be copies and that the recipients need to make a copy of the file and leave your copy in the folder. The recipients, your relatives or friends, will then receive an invitation to share the Dropbox folder you have created. If they already have Dropbox on their computer, they simply open the folder, make a copy of the files onto their computer and voila! You have shared a huge number of large files. Depending on your Internet speed, sharing can take some time to load large files, but the convenience of using Dropbox.com will immediately become evident. If you still have questions, go to the Dropbox. com website and view their introductory video. Google Drive For Genealogy Online storage service is similar to Dropbox, but with a distinctive twist. Google offers different features and a lower price. Online storage is the ability to store files and data on a remote server that can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection. More formally called cloud computing, it allows users to synchronize documents across multiple operating systems and browsers. It also allows people to easily share and collaborate on various projects such as building family trees. Cloud computing has several advantages over storing genealogy data on a desktop computer. In a nutshell, Google Drive provides a single place for users to store many different types of files. This includes such things as documents, PAf files, spreadsheets, pdf files and photographs. In total, Drive claims to be able to open 30 different kinds of files. Drive syncs across various computer platforms (such as PCs, Macs and mobile handsets) as well as across different geographic locations. The information contained in personal files that are stored in Drive can be indexed and searched. No matter what happens to your devices, your files are safely stored in Google Drive.
