Overview You will need: About 60 minutes and willing enthusiasm! As a missionary in the Family History Department you have a major role in providing our patrons with a consistent quality experience. Whether on the phone, online, or in person, FamilySearch Support strives to provide patrons with a delightful world-class service experience that positively represents our work in the Family History Department and reflects the example of the Savior. The FamilySearch website has some exciting new features to enrich the family history experience. Adding photos and stories to ancestors in Family Tree allows you to preserve and share precious family memories. Prepare (before the meeting!) Below you will find links to resources that will help you understand more about how to link photos and stories to your ancestors records in Family Tree. Please study the resources and complete the activities below. Photos and Stories allow users to preserve photos and stories of ancestors. With photos, faces can be identified and then linked to the respective ancestors profiles in a user s family tree. Photos and stories can also be seamlessly shared via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and . Each user can upload as many as 5,000 photos (with five-megabyte-per-image limit), and each story can be up to 100 pages long. According to FamilySearch CEO Dennis Brimhall, photos and stories matter, because they personally teach us time-honored principles from those who have gone on before us, like the value of hard work, dealing with life s ups and downs and the impact of choices. Click the link below to view a quick start video about photos and stories. Quick Start to Photos and Stories Click the link below to open and briefly review the photos and stories job aid. Quick Start to FamilySearch Photos and Stories How would you explain the purpose of FamilySearch photos and stories to a friend or family member? 2 ADD PHOTOS To add a photo, you need a digital copy. The digital files must be 5 MB or smaller. That should let you create copies at a higher resolution. The content must be consistent with FamilySearch.org standards. Many people make copies with a scanner or with a phone that takes photos at high resolution. Because adding a photo to Family Tree is a way to preserve and share the photo, providing the best copy you reasonably can is important. Photos must meet these requirements: They must be in a digital format. Currently the system accepts PNG and JPG files. The digital files must be 5 MB in size or smaller. The photo content must meet the upload guidelines and submission agreement. 1. Sign in to the FamilySearch website with your LDS Account user name and password. 2. In Family Tree, navigate to the person to which you want to add the photo. 3. Click the person s name to display the person card. 4. On the person card, click Photos. 5. Click Add Photo. 6. Note: The first time you add a photo, you will be required to read and agree to the submission agreement. 7. Click the green upload area with a white plus sign. 8. Browse to the photo on your computer and click the photo. 9. Click Open. 10. Refresh the screen to see the photo. Tip: For most browsers, press F Click Upload, to add additional pictures. 12. Repeat steps At the lower left of each photo, mark the check box. 14. To connect the photo(s) to the person s Photos page in Family Tree, click Attach Photos. 15. Note: Currently photos are unavailable for living people. Explain how you will teach your family members, friends, and ward members to add photos to a person in Family Tree? What guidelines need to be followed as you add photos to a person in Family Tree? FamilySearch and Family Tree August 2013 Copyright 2013 IRI Page 2 of 7
ADD TITLE AND DESCRIPTION You can add a title to a photo (for example, Meleana Kauae in 1920). You can also add a description to provide more information about the photo. 1. Go to the FamilySearch home page. 2. Click Photos. 3. Click My Photos. 4. Click the photo to which you want to add the title. 5. At the upper right, click Click to edit the title. 6. Type the title text. 7. Click Details if you want to add a description to the photo. 8. Type the description. How would you help a friend or family member add a title and description to a photo? ADD STORIES You can add stories about your ancestors to Family Tree. You can link the story so that it appears on the Stories pages of everyone in the story. If you add a story, you can attach a photo, edit the story, or delete the story. And you can add comments to stories others have written. Tip: First, write your story in a word processing program and then copy and paste the story into the FamilySearch website. When you add a story, you do two tasks. Add the story. Connect the story to the Stories pages in Family Tree. 1. If the story was created in a word processing document, open the story and copy the text. 2. In Family Tree, navigate to the person to which you want to add the story. 3. Click the person s name to display the person card. 4. On the person card, click Stories. 5. Click Add Story. FamilySearch and Family Tree August 2013 Copyright 2013 IRI Page 3 of 7
6. Click Create New Story. 7. In the Title box, type a title for the story. 8. Click the larger box below. 9. Type or paste the story. 10. Click Attach Photo, if you want to attach a photo. a. Select the photo. b. Click Add. 11. Click Save. How would you help a friend or family member add a story to a person in Family Tree? TAG PHOTOS AND STORIES When you add photos and stories to an ancestor s record in Family Tree, the system automatically tags and connects the photos and stories to that person in the tree. You don t have to tag or make connections unless there are multiple people in the photo or story. TAG PHOTO TO ANOTHER PERSON Click the links below to learn about tagging photos. Tagging a Photo Why tag a photo in Family Tree? 1. Go to the FamilySearch home page. 2. At the top center click Photos. 3. At the top left click My Photos. 4. Click the photo that you want to tag. 5. Click the head of a person in the photo to display a circle. 6. Use the white corner handles to size the circle. 7. Click and drag to reposition the circle. 8. Click the text box and type the person s name. 9. Click Add New Person. 10. Repeat steps 5-9 for each person. 11. Note: If you tag a living person, the photo will not be displayed on his or her person card or person page. FamilySearch and Family Tree August 2013 Copyright 2013 IRI Page 4 of 7
TAG STORY TO ANOTHER PERSON If a story has information about more than one person, it is possible to create a tag to additional people in Family Tree. 1. Tip: Make a list of each person in the story. Include the PID (person identifier) number for each person on the list. 2. Open the story. 3. At the top right, click Who is in This Story? 4. Type the person s name. 5. Click the underlined name. 6. Click the Connect to the Family Tree symbol (exclamation in red circle). 7. Click Link to Family Tree. 8. Type the PID number in the bottom left. 9. Click Link. 10. The story is now linked to the new person and the name appears under People in This Story. 11. Repeat steps 3-9 for additional names. Explain why it is important to tag each person in a story? Teach One Another (in the meeting!) Ask your questions! You have had a few excellent experiences preparing for today s meeting. Be sure to ask as many questions as you can. Share your experiences with other missionaries, training assistants, and instructors. Discussion Come prepared to discuss and share ideas about the following topics in the learning meeting: Photos Attach a photo Crop a photo Identify the primary photo Tag a photo Information about the photo Attach group photo to individuals FamilySearch and Family Tree August 2013 Copyright 2013 IRI Page 5 of 7
Find photos (photo gallery) Organizing photos on computer Stories Write a story from vital statistics and census records. Use Google to find stories. Use Google to find information about occupations, place names, etc. Attach a photo to a story. Observe During training you will have the opportunity to learn many things. As you make an effort to prepare and then participate in the learning meetings, you will have a positive joyful experience. Participate in a small group discussion with your TA. Come prepared to discuss and share ideas about the following topics: Obtaining photos from other people. Working with photos from other people. Share experiences and suggestions. What did you learn? Record some goals regarding what you have learned today. I will help my friends and family members learn how to attach photos and add stories to individuals in their family tree. Ponder and Prove (after the meeting!) Ponder about the opportunity to add photos and stories to ancestors in your family tree. How will this bless you as an individual and as a family? FamilySearch and Family Tree August 2013 Copyright 2013 IRI Page 6 of 7
How do you feel about an ancestor when you see a photo or read a story about that ancestor? Ask your questions! Answer theirs. Log in to Skype, and have a meaningful discussion about photos and stories with your fellow support missionaries. Be sure to answer at least one question or make at least one comment via Skype.
