1 Minority Report Assignment Minority Report: Predictive Technology The movie Minority Report was released in 2002 and is adaption of a short story by the same name. It is set in the future. It stars Tom Cruise as agent Tom Anderton who is charge of the Pre-Crime division which predicts and prevents murders. Though released in 2002 the movie shows a wide range of technology that we are now using today or will soon be. The movie is set in 2054 so the direct Steven Spielberg assembled a think tank of MIT futurists to imagine what the world would look like in After watching the movies, answer the following questions from task 1 and post it to your weebly and then move onto task 2. Task 1) Movie Comprehension 1. Why did Tom Cruise s character join Pre-Crime? Tom Cruise s character joins Pre-Crime, because earlier his son, Shawn, had went missing (kidnapped), so he decided to join something where he could stop terrible incidents like this before they happen. 2. How do the law enforcement offices use technology to apprehended criminals and investigate crimes? The law enforcement offices use technology to apprehended criminals and investigate crimes by using three very gifted people, one girl and two guys called Pre-Cogs, who can somehow see the future and crimes that will happen in the future. When this happens they use these images to locate where the crime is going to occur. This helps stop the crime before it happens so they can catch the criminal. 3. What happened to the newspaper the man was reading when Tom Cruise s character was on the train? The newspaper was electronic so that it changed articles on the same page, without needing to flip the page. The newspaper changed its heading while a man was reading it showing that they were searching for tom s character and catch him before he commits a crime. The man on the train saw this in the newspaper and noticed tom was on the same rain as him. 4. What happened at the Gap store?

2 At the Gap store, as Tom s character walked and a figure of a lady had a eye scanner that scanned his newly replaced eyes as he walked in. The scanner then looked through the history of what the old man who used to have that eye and gave Tom some recommendations on what he should look at, based on his past history. 5. What happened to all the criminals the Pre-Crime division had imprisoned? All the criminals that had been imprisoned had to be released after Pre-crime closed down. Paragraph Question: What is the movies message about technology? The movies message about technology is that if we use technology the right way for the right things then it can do great things for us. For example, predict the future to solve future crimes before they happen, advanced research purposes, and many more. Also, that in the future technology will grow and provide us with more advanced tools. However, technology can be abused and mistreated which leads up to negative things. For example, in the movie Minority Report they set up a fake crime to make it look like someone else did so they can get arrested. Overall, technology is a great thing to have but sometimes we just need to be careful of where it can take things. Task 2) Technology Research 1.) Electronic Paper: It was used in the movie while a man was sitting on the train he was reading a newspaper also

3 called an E-paper. You don t have to flip any pages it s all on one page! Which means we're saving paper. It s kind of like the TV in your hand with the news channel on it. There is an electronic paper, it s made to resemble actual ink and instead of using a backlit screen, it reflects the light around it just like actual paper does. 2.) Retinal Scan: A retina scanner would be really cool to have in our everyday lives actually. In movies you usually see it in some sort of business building. But imagine having it in your house or at school or even while texting your friends. You will know if its actually them or someone else you're talking to over the screen. It will sure come in handy when a girl or a guy uses their friends account pretending to be them and saying mean things to the other person. The retinal scanner does this by scanning the retina at the back of you eye to identify the pattern of the blood vessels and how they line up. Each person's retina is unique, so by scanning the retina they would be able to identify who the person is. 3.) Guided Cars:

4 I think everyone would love to go where they want without having to actually drive, it s kind of like having a driver for yourself but actually it s just the car. There are some guided cars now but not the ones like in the movie. Hopefully, we ll have them in the future. Now typically they're used in warehouses to move crates and boxes around. But what if everyone had one, we would save so much gas without polluting the air and it would also be way efficient for us. Oh, and basically its just a mobile robot that follows markers or wires in the floor, or uses vision or lasers. 4.) Facial recognition advertising billboards: These are theoretically able to recognize passers-by via facial recognition, call them by name, and deliver customer specific advertisements. That s really cool! They can identify anyone pretty much also it s handy if you're looking for someone missing or your friend lost in the mall, you can go there if they hear your name, well I guess you can just call them on their cell. This unique technology is not made yet but is still in the process of being developed by the Japanese company NEC. It will be a very

5 big thing once they are released.
