5 Redrawing artistic map ) The 2013 Festival has surpassed all expectations, after trials tribulations our arts community has been through over last year, for me it has been particularly poignant to see Festival so triumphantly take centre stage with new audiences, new artists, new works, new partnerships, new private public supporters. There is nothing like a good idea more it plays out over time, better it gets. And has once again proven just how good an idea it is. From Festival s humble beginnings in 2005 up until this watershed year, has been about presenting acclaimed work from around world just around corner. The Festival has also been about innovation exping horizons possibility for what performing arts might be. The Festival is now a signature event for Vancouver. It is a beloved institution, synonymous with city s growing reputation as a centre for creative thinking about our contemporary world. On behalf 2013 Festival team, staff contractors, our board directors, our volunteers, our Leaders Council members, participating artists, our organizational partners ir staff thank for crossing line, for continuing to believe in its ever-evolving vision, for insisting unequivocally that arts culture are at centre this city s life, well-being prosperity. On February 3rd, 2013, at end anor amazing transformative Festival, I was exactly where I wanted to be as an audience member: exhausted but exhilarated. Three months later, as final numbers trickle in, I am exactly where I want to be as Board President: relieved reinvigorated. This is essence : uncompromising in depth quality its programming, willing to take artistic risks, yet committed to fiscal responsibility sustainable growth. The 2013 Festival was a turning point on our journey: we reached new bigger audiences; our media coverage was broader; box-fice was up; we forged new relationships with local sponsors; level giving by our Patrons Circle members grew to unprecedented levels. But real measure our success comes from less quantifiable indices, those moments in dark ( sometimes broad daylight) that provoke us (Winners Losers), or move us (Testament), or help us to see ourselves our city more feelingly (Do You See What I Mean?). Behind such moments lies s greatest resource: people. Our human library involves staff, board members, volunteers, presenting partners, artists audience members in a dynamic exchange energy, ideas, engaged response. Toger we didn t just cross line in 2013; we redrew artistic map. In 2014, our 10th anniversary, expect to be ed even furr into uncharted territory. Norman Armour Executive Director Peter Dickinson Board President
