With free admission, great art is accessible for all. In 2019, we will host the Turner Prize, one of the best known prizes for visual arts in the world. Enterprising - We create value for ourselves, our community and our partners by being responsive to new opportunities; we encourage collaboration, creativity and initiative from our people Welcoming We re friendly and warm, while maintaining professionalism of practice and behaviour; human empathy is key to how we think, internally and externally Questioning Our philosophy is one of investigation: being astute to audiences needs, unlocking understanding, provoking debate and asking tough questions especially of ourselves Purpose of Job/Key objectives We are looking for a confident and dynamic person to work with Turner Contemporary s Learning Team to coordinate outreach activity for the 2018/19 Portfolio Art Competition which aims to engage children, young people and teachers in Turner Prize Principal Responsibilities Responsibilities will include: - Supporting the Schools Officer to deliver the 2018/19 Portfolio competition, and wider schools work related to Turner Prize Designing content for workshop activity and assemblies - Liaising with schools over the phone and in person to book in outreach activity - Creating and managing project documents and budgets - Issuing contracts - Completing risk assessments - Monitoring statistics and inputting data - Ordering materials - Documenting activity through photography/film and creating digital content for the competition website

3 - Processing competition entries - Communicating with other teams about events and workshops, particularly the marketing team to help promote the competition - Contacting competition entrants and responding to competition enquiries - Supporting preparation for the Award Ceremony at Canterbury Christ Church University and the Portfolio exhibition at Turner Contemporary - Managing the Portfolio exhibition preview at Turner Contemporary - Participating in evaluation meetings - Attending events on behalf of Turner Contemporary, some of which may be in the evenings and at weekends. - Any other duties as reasonably required. 4 A self-starter and driven to succeed A great team player Interest in the visual arts and understanding of the aims and objectives of Turner Contemporary An understanding and connection to our organisational values of Questioning, Welcoming and Enterprising A commitment to Equal Opportunities and Child Protection Full clean driving licence and use of a car The Portfolio Competition Portfolio is Turner Contemporary s annual art competition for pupils, students and teachers in Kent, run in partnership with Canterbury Christchurch University. The competition is committed to showcasing the work of exciting emerging artists, with each years winning work exhibited at Turner Contemporary over the summer and seen by thousands of visitors to the gallery. The competition attracts in excess to 1,500 entries per year. To help raise awareness of the 2019 Turner Prize being hosted at Turner Contemporary, Portfolio will become a major vehicle for outreach in schools and adult education groups across Kent. This will be done through a series of workshops and assemblies in response to this year s competition theme art rebels. Now in its 12 th year, the 2018/19 Portfolio Competition is more exciting than ever, with the development of a new competition website and outreach programme as well as widening out the competition categories so that more people have the opportunity to be involved. This is an ambitious programme that aims to widen engagement in the arts to new and diverse audiences by building relationships between schools/community groups to Turner Contemporary. 5 Turner Prize at Turner Contemporary in 2019 Overview In autumn 2019, Turner Contemporary will host the Turner Prize. With a target of 250,000 visits, national and international press coverage including a feature on BBC s News at 10, which regularly pulls in more than 4 million viewers; this is a major moment for Margate and Kent. The spotlight will be on us both nationally and internationally, confirming Kent s place on the map as a key cultural destination and generating significant, measurable social and economic impact. Photo credit: Thierry Bal One of the best known prizes for the visual arts in the world, the Turner Prize aims to promote public debate around new developments in contemporary British art. Every

6 other year, the prize leaves Tate Britain and is presented at a venue outside London. In 2019 this venue is Turner Contemporary. Four of the most prolific artists working right now are shortlisted to win the prize based on an exhibition that has taken place the previous year. This will undoubtedly trigger an exciting debate around who will win and offers the chance to involve large and broad audiences in the arts. The prize is named after JMW Turner who famously said the skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all Europe. When choosing the name for the prize, the founders chose J.M.W. Turner as a figure who had been innovative and controversial in his own day but also gone on to be seen as one of the greatest British artists. Turner had also wanted to establish a prize for young artists himself. Previous winners include: Howard Hodgkin (1985), Anish Kapoor (1991), Rachel Whiteread (1993), Antony Gormley (1994), Damien Hirst (1995), Steve McQueen (1999), Grayson Perry (2003), Jeremy Deller (2004), Helen Marten (2016), Lubaina Himid (2017). As part of Turner Prize 2019, we will: Attract over 250,000 visits during the exhibition (500,000 visits in 2019, a growth in visits of approximately 40% compared to 2017), benefitting local businesses Increase overnight stays and further develop the thriving visitor economy thanks to a growth in visits to Turner Contemporary Increase civic pride through a volunteer scheme designed to deepen engagement and raise awareness about Turner Prize Reach every Kent resident (population 1.5million) Connect with schools, colleges and the wider community to offer life changing opportunities and deliver outreach to schools with the aim of bringing 15,000 pupils to Turner Contemporary in 2019 Develop our international and national profile via an extensive media partnership with BBC and Tate Contribute to positive perceptions of Margate and Kent, bringing great benefit to the town s brand Provide significant opportunities for artists and creative professionals to develop their work and profile, contributing to Kent s cultural infrastructure Legacy Margate and Kent will be different after Turner Prize, with stronger civic pride, engaged communities, a stronger brand, economy and cultural infrastructure.
