3 1 INTRODUCTION LETTER Greetings Prospective Jabberwock Participant, The Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Delta House Foundation, Inc. are proud to present the Jabberwock Program. Jabberwock is an opportunity to engage young adult women in our local community in a youth program that teaches the significance of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. The 22 Founders of the sorority wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to underserved; to educate and provide solutions for problems in their communities. In 1925, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presented Jabberwock as a national program to reflect the sorority s commitment to academic and cultural enrichment for female youth in local communities. The Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Delta House Foundation, Inc. welcome participants and their families to learn more about our Jabberwock program. As an active participant in Jabberwock, you will be awarded funds to pursue your educational goals. In addition, you will develop leadership, teamwork, social, and presentation skills through participating in community service projects, attending special cultural events, fundraising activities, and attending special sessions planned by the committee. The program will culminate with a traditional Jabberwock Cotillion and scholarship awards. Nationwide, the Jabberwock Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to thousands of young ladies. I invite you to complete the Jabberwock Application and attend the mandatory program orientation, more details will be provided. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Richmond Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Scholarship Committee Chair, Mrs. Kimberly Riddick at or at riddick_kimberly@comcast.net. Thank you for your interest! The Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Delta House Foundation, Inc. are proud and excited to present the Jabberwock Program. We look forward to meeting you! 4 2 JABBERWOCK HSTORY Jabberwock is a traditional program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Members of the Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, in Boston, Massachusetts, presented the first Jabberwock in 1925 as an effort to find a new method of raising money for the chapter s scholarship fund. Marion Hope Conover of Iota Chapter conceived the idea of a variety show with skits, dances, and songs in competition for prizes of varying amounts. She called this new kind of show a "Jabberwock" because it was inspired by the Jabberwock in Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland." The "Jabberwock" was a mythical character who summoned all the creatures of the kingdom each year for the purpose of putting on a show. The first Jabberwock was an immediate success, and the idea caught on with many chapters of Delta Sigma Theta. The Jabberwock has since evolved into a more diverse program that continues to raise funds for scholarships and other Delta Sigma Theta service projects. The word ''Jabberwock" was copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on December 28, Today, Jabberwock is a national program within Delta Sigma Theta that reflects the Sorority's commitment to scholarship and the arts. Many communities served by local chapters of Delta Sigma Theta eagerly anticipate the event. Jabberwock funds are earmarked for scholarships to be given by the sponsoring chapter to young people of promise and ability, and for public service projects. The Richmond Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Delta House Foundation, Inc. Jabberwock Scholarship Program provides funds for scholarships given to young women, grades 1-5 and grades11-12, who participate in the program. These scholarship funds will assist with financial needs for participant's secondary education. Our Jabberwock Committee is working diligently to develop a Jabberwock program that will provide a curriculum that includes innovative educational, cultural, community service, and self-enrichment activities and programs.
