Theory of Operation The throttle pedal produces two voltage signals proportional to the pedal movement. The primary signal varies between and 5 volts and the secondary signal varies between and.5 volts. The Engine Control Module uses the two signals
2 to validate throttle pedal position to control engine fueling. The ECM illuminates the MIL lamp and ETC light solid immediately after the diagnostic runs and fails. Acceleration rate and Engine output are limited. The ECM will turn off the MIL lamp after the diagnostic runs and passes in 4 consecutive drive cycles. When Monitored: While the engine is running. Set Condition: The ECM detected a conformance error between APPS and APPS. Possible Causes WIRING HARNESS OR CONNECTOR DAMAGED APPS ECM Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based. OTHER DTCS PRESENT. Using the scan tool, check for any additional APPS fault codes. Do you have any additional APPS faults? Yes Troubleshoot other DTCs first, Go To No Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION Diagnostic Procedure. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/. APPS HARNESS. Verify that the APPS is connected.. Inspect the harness and the APPS Are any pins damaged? Yes Repair or replace the harness. TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To. APPS. Monitor the APPS and APPS voltage with the scan tool while depressing the accelerator pedal. Is the voltage transition shown on the scan tool smooth while depressing the accelerator pedal and is the voltage from APPS twice as much as the voltage from APPS? Yes Go To 4
3 No Replace the APPS. TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ 4. (K) APPS SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN. Disconnect the C ECM harness. Disconnect the APPS harness NOTE: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.. Measure the resistance of the (K) APPS Signal circuit between the APPS connector and the ECM C Is the resistance below. ohms? Yes Go To 5 No Repair the open in the (K) APPS Signal 5 TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based CONTROL C (.7L) (K85) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN. Measure the resistance of the (K85) 5-volt Supply circuit between the APPS connector and the ECM C Is the resistance below. ohms? Yes Go To No Repair the open in the 5-volt Supply TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based CONTROL C (.7L) 4474
4 . (K) APPS SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND. Measure the resistance between ground and the APPS Signal circuit at the sensor Is the resistance greater than K ohms? Yes Go To 7 No Repair the short to ground in the (K) APPS Signal TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based (K) APPS SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO OTHER CIRCUITS. Measure the resistance between the (K) APPS Signal circuit and all other circuits in the ECM C Is the resistance below K ohms between the (K) APPS Signal circuit and any other circuit? Yes Repair the short between the (K) APPS Signal circuit and the circuit that measured below k ohms. TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To 8 4
5 8. (K85) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND. Measure the resistance between the ground and the (K85) 5-volt Supply circuit at the sensor Is the resistance greater than k ohms? Yes Repair the short to ground in the (K85) 5-volt Supply TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based No Go To (K85) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO OTHER CIRCUITS. Measure the resistance between the (K85) 5-volt Supply circuit and all other circuits in ECM C harness Is the resistance below K ohms between the (K85) 5-volt Supply circuit and any other circuit? Yes Repair the short between the (K85) 5-volt Supply circuit and the circuit that measured below k ohms. TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To 5
6 . (K7) APPS RETURN CIRCUIT OPEN. Measure the resistance of the (K7) APPS Return circuit between the sensor connector and the ECM C Is the resistance below. ohms? Yes Go To No Repair the open in the (K7) APPS Return TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based CONTROL C (.7L) 444. (K) APPS SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K85) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT. Measure the resistance between the (K) APPS Signal circuit and the (K85) 5-volt Supply circuit at the sensor harness Is the resistance below k ohms? Yes Repair the short between the (K) APPS Signal circuit and the (K85) 5-volt Supply TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based No Go To 84. (K7) APPS RETURN CIRCUIT SHORTED TO OTHER CIRCUITS. Measure the resistance between the (K9) APPS Signal circuit and the (F854) 5-volt Supply circuit in the APPS harness Is the resistance below k ohms? Yes Repair the short between the (K9) APPS Signal circuit and the (F854) 5-volt Supply 5 TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based No Go To 849. (K4) APPS RETURN CIRCUIT SHORTED TO OTHER CIRCUITS. Measure the resistance between the (K4) APPS Return circuit and all other circuits in the ECM C harness Is the resistance below k ohms?
11 Yes Repair the short between the (K4) APPS Return circuit and the circuit that measured below k ohms. TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To. ECM. Reconnect the ECM connectors.. Reconnect the APPS. Turn Ignition on, engine off. 4. While monitoring with the scan tool, disconnect the sensor Did a APPS and APPS voltage too low DTC set? Yes Go To No Replace the ECM. TEST -.7L. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/. APPS. Reconnect the APPS. Monitor the APPS and APPS voltage with the scan tool while depressing the accelerator pedal.
