Three good trips to turn off the MIL. Possible Causes (K9) O RETURN DOWNSTREAM CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND (K) O / SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND (K) O / SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K9) O RETURN DOWNSTREAM CIRCUIT (K) O / SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (Z) O / HEATER GROUND CIRCUIT / O SENSOR MODULE (PCM) Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/.. ACTIVE DTC. Turn the ignition on.. With a scan tool, select View DTCs. Record DTC and Freeze Frame information.. Start the engine and allow it to idle for at least 6 seconds. WARNING:. With a scan tool, select View DTCs. Is the DTC Active at this time? Yes Go To When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury. No Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION Diagnostic Procedure. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/. (K) O / SIGNAL CIRCUIT. Turn the ignition off.. Disconnect the / O Sensor harness connector.. Ignition on, engine not running.. With a scan tool, monitor the / O Sensor voltage. Is the O Sensor voltage between. and 5. volts? Yes Go To No Go To 5

3 . O SENSOR. Measure the voltage on the (K9) O Return Downstream circuit in the O Sensor harness connector. Is the voltage at.5 volts? Yes Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the O Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors. Replace the / O Sensor if no problems were found with the connectors. V TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To 588. (K9) O RETURN DOWNSTREAM CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND. Turn the ignition off.. Disconnect the C PCM harness connector.. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K9) O Return Downstream circuit in the O Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance below ohms? Yes Repair the short to ground in the (K9) O Return Downstream circuit. TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To 8 58

4 5. (K) O / SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND. Turn the ignition off.. Disconnect the C and C PCM harness connectors.. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K) O / Signal circuit in the O Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance below ohms? Yes Repair the short to ground in the (K) O / TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To (K) O / SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K9) O RETURN DOWNSTREAM CIRCUIT. Measure the resistance between the (K) O / Signal circuit and the (K9) O Return Downstream circuit in the O Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance below ohms? Yes Repair the short between the (K9) O Return Downstream circuit and the (K) O / TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To 7 667

5 7. (K) O / SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (Z) O / HEATER GROUND CIRCUIT. Measure the resistance between the (K) O / Signal circuit and the (Z) O / Heater ground circuit in the O Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance below ohms? Yes Repair the short between the (Z) O / Heater ground circuit and the (K) O / TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/ No Go To MODULE (PCM). Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Oxygen Sensor / and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Sensor and Control Module connectors.. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply. Were there any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - No Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module per Service Information. TEST. (Refer to 8 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - 5
