3 General Safety Rules WARNING! Read all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS Work area safety a. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. b. Do not operate electrically powered tools such as hydraulic compressors in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Electrically powered tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a hydraulic tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. Personal safety a. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a hydraulic tool. Do not use a hydraulic tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating hydraulic tools may result in serious personal injury. b. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c. Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch or controls are in the off-position before connecting hydraulic pressure line. d. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before attaching the hydraulic pump hose pressure line or turning the hydraulic tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to an operating part of the hydraulic tool may result in personal injury. e. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the hydraulic tool in unexpected situations. f. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Hydraulic tool use and care a. Do not force the hydraulic tool. Use the correct hydraulic tool for your application. The correct hydraulic tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. Page 3

4 b. Do not use the hydraulic tool if the tool does not function properly when pressurized. Any hydraulic tool that does not function properly is dangerous and must be repaired. c. Disconnect the tool from the hydraulic pump hose pressure source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing hydraulic tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the hydraulic tool accidentally. d. Store idle hydraulic tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the hydraulic tool or these instructions to operate the hydraulic tool. Hydraulic tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e. Maintain hydraulic tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the hydraulic tool s operation. If damaged, have the hydraulic tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained hydraulic tools. f. Keep tools maintained and clean. Properly maintained tools are less likely to fail and are easier to control. g. Use the hydraulic tool and related accessories in accordance with these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of hydraulic tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the hydraulic tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation. 5. Service a. Have your hydraulic tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the hydraulic tool is maintained. Specific Safety Rules Maintain labels and nameplates on the tool. These carry important safety information. If unreadable or missing, contact Harbor Freight Tools for a replacement. Avoid unintentional starting. Prepare to begin work before turning on the hydraulic pressure tool. Do not leave the tool unattended when it is connected to a hydraulic pressure line. Turn off the tool, and disconnect it from its hydraulic pressure source before leaving. This product is not a toy. Keep it out of reach of children. Assembly A hydraulic pressure line (not supplied) must be attached to this tool for it to function. Your hydraulic line must have a 13/16 20 UNF fitting. Page 6

7 Functions This tool is capable of pulling back or compressing up to 6 at a pressure of up to 10 tons (20,000 Lbs.). Using the Hooks attached to each end, you can grasp a stationary pulling point to move the work piece. You can also utilize this tool as a part of a larger more complex machine where hydraulically powered pull back motion is needed. Operating Instructions Read the entire Important Safety Information section at the beginning of this manual including all text under subheadings therein before set up or use of this product. Tool set up Remove the Dust Cap (R23) and attach your hydraulic line (not supplied). Check to be sure the hydraulic line connection is tight with no leaks. Work piece set up Be sure that your work piece or equipment has attachment points which are balanced, and capable of sustaining the weight of the Pull Back Ram and the work piece itself. General operating instructions Follow manufacturer s instructions on proper and safe use of the hydraulic pump, valve, and line (not included) that you are using to drive this tool. Check and be sure that your hydraulic pressure source is in good condition and will operate safely. Connect the hydraulic pressure line (not supplied) to the Pull Back Ram. Prepare the work piece and the work area for pulling back. Attach the Hooks (R10) to the work piece as required. NOTE: Use an anchor strong enough to sustain the applied forces. Initiate hydraulic pressure on the Pull Back Ram, using your hydraulic pressure source (not supplied). When the work piece has been moved as required, secure it safely in place, release hydraulic pressure. Remove the Pull Back Ram. 8. To prevent accidents, turn off the tool and disconnect its hydraulic power supply after use. Clean, then store the tool indoors out of children s reach. Page 7

8 Maintenance And Servicing WARNING Damaged equipment can fail, causing serious personal injury. Do not use damaged equipment. If abnormal noise, fade or vibration occurs, have the problem corrected before further use. Cleaning, maintenance, and lubrication BEFORE EACH USE, inspect the general condition of the tool. Check for loose screws, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged hydraulic lines and any other condition that may affect its safe operation. After Use, clean external surfaces of the tool with clean cloth. 3. WARNING! If the hydraulic line used with this tool is damaged, it must be replaced only by a qualified service technician. Troubleshooting Problem Possible Causes Probable Solutions Tool will not operate Tool fades, allowing uncontrolled movement of work piece. No hydraulic pressure. 11 LIMITED 90 DAY WARRANTY Harbor Freight Tools Co. makes every effort to assure that its products meet high quality and durability standards, and warrants to the original purchaser that this product is free from defects in materials and workmanship for the period of 90 days from the date of purchase. This warranty does not apply to damage due directly or indirectly, to misuse, abuse, negligence or accidents, repairs or alterations outside our facilities, criminal activity, improper installation, normal wear and tear, or to lack of maintenance. We shall in no event be liable for death, injuries to persons or property, or for incidental, contingent, special or consequential damages arising from the use of our product. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation of exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty is expressly in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, including the warranties of merchantability and fitness. To take advantage of this warranty, the product or part must be returned to us with transportation charges prepaid. Proof of purchase date and an explanation of the complaint must accompany the merchandise. If our inspection verifies the defect, we will either repair or replace the product at our election or we may elect to refund the purchase price if we cannot readily and quickly provide you with a replacement. We will return repaired products at our expense, but if we determine there is no defect, or that the defect resulted from causes not within the scope of our warranty, then you must bear the cost of returning the product.
