3 environmental Marco products are produced to all applicable environmental standards. No compounds used contain any substances classified as health hazards according to EEC Directive 1999/45/EC and the UK CHIP Statutory Instrument 2002 No % of all possible recycled upvc material is reused in the manufacture of Marco Trunking Systems. Recycled material is only used in the upvc Trunking bases in order to allow the visible elements and accessories to be as pure white in colour as possible. In order to maintain the highest quality and to keep tolerances above the required level, the ratio of regrind to virgin material does not exceed a predetermined percentage. All Marco Steel Wire Cable Trays are manufactured from steel wire rod comprising 100% recycled material. 100% of the minimal amount of scrap Steel Wire Cable Tray produced is sold locally for reprocessing. Marco Steel Wire Cable Tray production is UK based, reducing both its product-miles and carbon footprint to a minimum and setting it apart from its main competitors. Marco recognises that it can extend its sustainability policy beyond its own business and encourage Marco customers to return old products to Marco for recycling and reprocessing into good production. 4 sustainability ysgol-y-graig The UK s largest manufacturer of Steel Wire Cable Tray, Marco Cable Management has supplied Ysgol-y-Graig, North Wales first ever green school, with Apollo 3 Compartment upvc dado Trunking throughout the building. Work at the 3.7million Ysgol-y-Graig in Anglesey, built using sustainable timber, has now been completed and lessons have resumed for the school s 300 pupils. The overall design of the school has been created with sustainable principles in mind. All internal lighting is fitted with energy efficient lamps, and the school generates up to 50% of its own electricity through photovoltaic roof tiles and wind turbines, with surplus energy generated sold to National Grid. Marco upvc dado Trunking has been installed at the school to contain the traditional electrical installation, whilst any waste material generated was returned to the Marco manufacturing facility for recycling. Offering several benefits in terms of ease of installation, the use of Marco dado Trunking has had a significant impact on the installation programme reducing costs, time and labour. Situated in Anglesey, North Wales, near to Marco s headquarters, the school was visited by several of the Marco team, all of whom were keen to see how the new scheme has developed. 5 upvc trunking system antimicrobial Anti-microbial protection supplied as standard with our new ELITE ACADEMY range Marco is pleased to offer an anti-microbial protection to its upvc product ranges, including the ELITE Hygieia range. These upvc Trunking systems are used nationwide in environments where the spread of infection must be controlled, such as hospitals, care homes, schools and laboratories. Marco utilises silver-ion technology, to create a defence against 99.9% of harmful bacteria growth. This provides built-in protection from, and prevents the growth of, bacteria, fungi, mildew and moulds, including: MRSA E-Coli Salmonella Klebsiella Pneumoniae Streptococci The anti-microbial compound is incorporated into the upvc, and is therefore an integral part of the trunking. This means there is no degradation of performance if the surface becomes scratched or damaged as there is protection throughout the system. ELITE hygieia range All anti-microbial products are tested in accordance with ISO22196:2007, which specifies the method of evaluating the antibacterial activity of treated plastic products and is in compliance with all relevant European regulations. 6 upvc trunking system case study - antimicrobial dr gray s, elgin Marco s Hygieia has been specified at the large-scale refurbishment of Dr Gray s hospital in Elgin, Scotland. Under a phased programme of works, wards and offices across the hospital have been revamped and fitted with new services, including mechanical and electrical. G&A Barnie Group carried out all M&E works and specified Marco s ELITE 3 Hygieia product as part of their plans. Graham Nicol, Contracts Manager, Elgin Branch of G&A Barnie Group said: Dr Gray s hospital remained open at all times throughout the year long refurbishment programme and was split into very definite phases. Timescales were critical and we operated closely alongside a number of other trades to ensure we all worked as effectively as possible. A key objective for us was the upgrade of the cabling system to meet Cat 6 requirements. We removed the majority of existing services and re-installed with a modern cabling solution. During the design phase, the client set their criteria and a major concern for them focused on the use of products that helped prevent the spread of infection. With little experience of working with antimicrobial products, we carried out some research and through discussions with Marco s National Business Development Manager, Steve Davis, found Marco s ELITE 3 Hygieia upvc Trunking. This proved to be ideal solution for use in the Staff Nurse Stations, Ward and Office areas. We are seeing increasingly more demand from end users who are asking us to source new products that address specific issues. 8 upvc trunking system case study - DDA part-m compliance treloar school, hampshire Marco has supplied its DDA Compliant ELITE upvc Trunking to Electrical Contractors Baudelaire Ltd, carrying out works at a large-scale extension at internationally renowned Treloar School and College. The Treloar Trust provides education, care, therapy, medical support and independent training to young people with special needs from all over the UK and overseas. There was also an important requirement in meeting DDA compliance, and Marco was able to offer this through the use of a grey centre lid. The bright white colour of the Trunking also sat well with the clean lines and general design of the building. Contractor Baudelaire, has carried out all electrical works at the project on behalf of main Contractor, Osborne. Paul Sawyer, Director at Baudelaire said: This was a complex two stage project that became challenging as we began to look at accessible routes across the building. 12 elite 3 trunking case study bristol robotics laboratory Marco has supplied a series of cabling solutions to contractors Concab Electrical Limited as part of the electrical and mechanical fit out of the world renowned, Bristol Robotics Laboratory. The Robotics Laboratory carries out cutting edge research programmes focused on the development of robot systems and is the leading and largest academic centre for multidisciplinary robotics research in the UK. A full refurbishment programme of a new laboratory has facilitated further room for development and research across a 2,400 square foot area encompassing 60 separate rooms, with new accommodation for laboratories, offices, research and teaching activities also to be developed. The electrical and mechanical works formed a key part of the refurbishment scheme and was managed by Concab, who was appointed by the main contractor, Cowlin Construction Limited. The six month M&E programme included the supply and installation of a new LV distribution system, small power services, lighting system including emergency lighting and fire alarms with voice and data system. The project was designed to be completed under a fast track programme, which meant ease of installation was essential, without compromising quality, suitability and strength in terms of products and systems selected. Scissor lifts at five metres high were used to carry out the majority of the works, across a vast area, which presented a series of challenges to the site team. Steve Davis, National Business Development Manager for Marco said: The ELITE 3 upvc Trunking system was selected for the scheme, its curved bright white appearance blending well with the surrounding aesthetics. Within the new laboratory, it was also adapted to include a grey lid to meet DDA requirements. This system offers an innovative design solution for the growing data cabling market. 22 elite compact trunking case study the dorchester Under a joint initiative with Electrical Times magazine, Marco was keen to highlight the virtues of its ELITE upvc Compact Trunking product and invited contractors Electrical Management Services to test it out on-site. Having never previously worked with the Marco product, the test was managed by Electrical Times who liaised with Marco and the contractor throughout. Electrical Management Services chose to utilise the Marco product at their latest project at the Dorchester hotel in London where they were installing a Trunking system in the IT, phone and control room. Finding a product that would complement the hotels décor was a key objective. EMS Supervisor Barry Jenkins explains: We d been commissioned to review Marco s ELITE Compact Trunking so we asked if we could try it out at this particular venue. The Trunking is made from a very fine quality upvc which gives it a high gloss upvc finish. Very bright, very clean. The manufacturer has also rejected the boxy design common to most trunking solutions in favour of something so curved it s almost aerodynamic; the sweeping profile is more Ferrari than transit van. And finally, two piece adjustable internal and external covers disguise walls that don t always connect at a true 90 degrees. In a nutshell, it looks great and the client thought so too. So how did the ELITE perform from a practical point of view? Barry continued... As with all Marco products, the ELITE was readily available and swiftly delivered, enabling us to green light the project without any delay. Our experienced electricians inspected it upon arrival and declared it thoroughly robust. time is money One of the most time consuming aspects of most extensive Trunking projects is the drilling at the back of the dado to carry out the fixings. For the ELITE, Marco has introduced pre punched knockouts. These occur EMS installed the product in the IT, phone and control room at the Dorchester hotel every 200mm and are elongated, making it quick and easy to line up the dado with the wall plugs. That s a big time saver and reduces the number of hours spent on-site. The ELITE 60 s unique top opening lid allows power cables to be installed easily and speedily. Should additional power cable wiring space be required further capacity can be obtained using the optional clip-in divider. A 50mm minimum bend radius is provided for all Marco ELITE 60 data fittings including flat angles, tees, internal and external angles. All cables can be laid into place avoiding the need to thread cables through apertures, thus ensuring that all of the Marco fittings are easy to install and to wire. The Juno units, each cut to one metre in length, were supplied preassembled with boxes and end caps already in place. Lorne Stewart forms part of main contractors Leadbitter s supply chain and has collaborated with Marco on several schemes in the past. The system benefits from a strong aluminium profile designed to retain its rigidity in all installation situations. The length of the Power Pole can easily be modified on-site and a height-adjusting locking mechanism is supplied. The pole benefits from 35mm deep accessory boxes for quick and easy installation of accessories. A 1 metre aluminium Power Pole extension is available, and Marco can supply power poles up to 5 metres in length, normally from stock. Each Marco Power Pole is supplied with six accessory boxes, ceiling shroud, floor boot, accessory spacers to help speed installation, and six metres of upvc divider. 65 steel wire cable tray system case study Set over two floors, the new build scheme contains eight studios at ground floor level and a large number of offices at level one. With major acoustic sound proofing and high power supply needed to cope with the demands of huge and complex lighting rigs (there are 2,700 light fittings in total), work began at ground floor and continued on a studio by studio basis. Marco s Steve Davis worked closely with electrical contractor Whitehead during both specification and build phases of the new studios. He said: Whitehead specified Marco s Steel Wire Cable Tray at a depth of 55mm, with widths varying from 100mm 500mm. Several thousand lengths of various sizes were installed to support the Cat6 data and fire alarm cables. A series of Marco Quick Fit accessories were used to support the installation. Quick Couplers were used to join the lengths whilst Quick Locks were used to speed installation on sweeping bends, alongside the Marco Fast Fix Strut Clip to secure the whole installation. The use of Fast Fix Strut Clip enabled the Steel Wire Cable Tray to be fixed to the strut channel within seconds, reducing the installation time considerably when compared to the traditional method of hold down clamp, spring nut, and bolt. BBC Drama Centre When M&E contractor Whitehead Building Services won a 5m installation contract to help create the BBC s new Drama Village in Cardiff, they chose to specify Marco s ELITE 3 upvc Trunking and Steel Wire Cable Tray systems across the entire facility. 66 steel wire cable tray system case study olympic white water centre Marco have supplied a series of specialist products to contractors at work on London s historic Olympic event in Marco s Steel Wire Cable Tray was used by the M&E team at the White Water Centre in Lee Valley, located 30 kilometers north of the Olympic Park, on the edge of the 1,000-acre River Lee Country Park part of the Lee Valley Regional Park. The White Water Centre has two separate courses including a 300 metre Olympic-standard competition course with a 5.5m descent, and a 160m intermediate/training course with a 1.6m descent. Both courses were built from scratch, along with a 10,000 square metre lake. This feeds a system of pumps that provide the course with 15 cubic metres of water per second. The white water is created by these pumps and obstacles placed along the course. Construction of the Lee Valley White Water Centre was completed on time. 98 testing electrical continuity Marco engage the services of York EMC, part of The University of York, to measure the resistance of Steel Wire Cable Tray and an MCQC. The resistance tests are in comparison with requirements EN537:2007 clause 11.1, electrical continuity [1]. An electric current is passed though the system in order to measure the resistance of the coupler. The lower the resistance, the better the electrical continuity. The maximum Steel Wire Cable Tray impedance per metre is set at 5mΩ, while the value recorded using Marco Steel Wire Cable Tray is 1.3mΩ, over 3 times more effective than the requirement specified. Under the requirements of the standard, couplers must have a maximum resistance of 50mΩ. On average, Marco couplers are found to have a resistance of 0.44mΩ, over 100 times more effective than the specified requirement. The Steel Wire Cable Tray and Coupler exceed the requirements of the EN 61537:2007 standard for the electrical continuity clause short circuit testing Marco has carried out short circuit tests at an independent laboratory in Europe in order to prove that their Steel Wire Cable Tray is designed and manufactured with sufficient strength to withstand a short circuit fault. Marco Steel Wire Cable Tray is tested in accordance with the standard that governs the manufacture of cable cleats, IEC 61914:2009 (Cable Cleats for Electrical Installations) in order to prove that the system can be used for installations where there is a fault requirement. 99 testing quick fit strut clip (mcfusc) The Marco Quick Fit Strut Clip (MCFUSC) is ideal for a wide range of installations, including modular builds, as it is able to be fitted prior to transit without the need of additional securing clips. In order to prove that the MCFUSC can be used in even the most complex of installations, Marco undertake bespoke testing to the conditions of British Standard BSEN The testing takes place at Marco s in-house facilities, using a Compression and Tensile Testing Load Cell. To determine a Safe Working Load for the MCFUSC, a test is devised by fitting a length of MC55200EZ (55 x 200mm) Steel Wire Cable Tray to a piece of strut, attached using two MCFUSC clips. The machine is then set to pull away from the centre position up to a maximum force of 80kg, until either the Steel Wire Cable Tray deflected 5mm in height, or the MCFUSC failed. The Steel Wire Cable Tray reaches the desired deflection of 5mm with the MCFUSC holding securely in place.
