3 PREFACE This volume is a collection of papers selected out of those presented at the 1988 International Conference on Advances in Communication and Control Systems This conference was held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana during October 19-21, 1988 and it was sponsored by National Science Foundation, Louisiana State University, Southern University, and International Federation of Information Processing The aim of this conference was to bring together researchers in the fields of communications, control, signal processing, and computing to explore emerging common themes~and report advances in research A tota] of 131 papers were presented at the conference Sixty-eight of these papers were selected for inclusion in two Springer-Verlag LNCIS volumes These volumes are titled AdvancesinCommunications and Signal Processing and Advances in Computin9 and Control We would like to thank AV Balakrishnan, Nirmal Bose, Zdzislaw Bubrucki, Romano DeSantis, Thomas Dwyer, Erol Gelenbe, Don Halverson, Manju Hegde, Edward Kamen, Hong Lee, Ruey-wen Liu, Mario Lucertini, Steve Marcus, Sanjit Mitra, Mort Naraghi-Pour, Dave Neuhoff, Roberto Triggiani and Nick Tzannes for helping with the organization of the sessions and selection of contributors We also thank Margaret Brewer and Rachel Bryant for their enthusiastic help with the preparation of the volumes William A Porter Subhash C Kak Editors
