4 PREFACE For more than ten years, Software Processes Technology has been an area of active research. Since a few years ago, research results have begun to impact the industrial practice of software development. This finding is the starting point for the 6 ~ European Workshop on Software Process Technology, which is an event sponsored in context of the Basic Research Action Working Group PROMOTER (Process Modeling Techniques Basic Research). Even more than in previous workshops, we have tried to bring together researchers from the scientific software process community and practitioners who have cared for efficient and effective industrial software processes. Technology transfer is one of the key goals of this year's workshop. The structure of this year's workshop has been changed with respect to types of sessions, types of papers accepted, and keynote presentations invited. For the first time, we have a few sessions which are directed at stimulating discussions between researchers and practitioners: (i) a fishbowl session, (ii) a divide and conquer session, and (iii) a project presentation session. We distinguished between four types of papers: industrial papers describing realworld experience in organizing software processes (first section of the proceedings), research papers covering particular aspects of software processes in depth (second section), position papers stating a clear and focused position with respect to software processes (third section), and descriptions of major process modeling projects (fourth section). We received more than 40 submissions from Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. The Programme Committee accepted only 16 of these papers (three industrial papers, three research papers, and ten position papers), thus maintaining the high quality standards of the European Workshops on Software Process Technology. For all the preparatory work, I am particularly grateful to the members of the Programme Committee: Nacer Boudjlida, Jean-Claude Demiame, Gregor Engels, Alfonso Fuggetta, Bertil Haack, Carlo Montangero, Bashar Nuseibeh, Lee Osterweil, Brian Warboys, Vincent Wiegel, Alex Wolf.
